Completed this game many years ago, shame they dont make games like this anymore they was just that damn good

Lizard 15-03-2005 05:55 PM

I read all books from Xanth :kosta:
I knew there was a game, but I never thought that I can get it :w00t:
Thanks(again) :Brain: :Brain: :Brain:

Spoonman 15-03-2005 07:18 PM

When I bought the game it came with a free Book (Demons don't dream), but I liked the game better :)

I can imagine the rating of 3, but personally I would give it a four, I don't mind working my way through a bunch of corny pun-jokes :D I found the graphics and environment to be quite charming.

Kon-Tiki 15-03-2005 07:56 PM

Teeheehee, I'd kill for corny pun-joke games :D This game's so friggin' awesome :D

JudgeDeadd 15-03-2005 08:00 PM

It's easy to diehere, I once died and had to restart...

Flop 15-03-2005 09:58 PM

This game rocks, as do most legend games, and if I didn't have it already I'd definitely download it. I hope this site will get more legend games (there are already quite a few, but some are still missing), since most of them are true classics, although rarely recognised as such.

A big thank you to Cowowar for uploading/reviewing this gem.

mr. whiny 16-03-2005 02:50 AM

the only legend game I ever liked was Shannara... and ONLY because I never read the books. This game is very not good at all. of course, I grew up on Sierra adventure games, Legend of Kyrandia, Monkey Island, and the like. So this sorta pales in comparison. It tries too hard to follow the book, but doesn't do a good job of that. So, all in all, I myself don't ever want to play it again. I honestly wouldn't recommend it either.

arctangent 16-03-2005 08:24 AM

i hate those "one wrong step and you die"-adventures.
sierra were masters at composing such demotivating stuff. and legend seems to line in with them.

i loved lucas arts' homage in monkey island 1 to those morons.
"oh no! you've really screwed it up this time! guess you'll have to start over! hope you saved the game!" :bleh:

JudgeDeadd 16-03-2005 10:07 AM

I died because there was a thing which didn't kill you immediately. Therefore you couldn't Undo it.

mr. whiny 16-03-2005 03:20 PM

with a little planning and the occasional save-game, you'd be amazed how easy it is to not die. I've beaten nearly every Sierra adventure game ever, and I never died or did something terribly wrong without a save that backed me up without too much trouble. if if you're getting demoralized by a game, well, it's not because there's something wrong with a game.

Elaslay 17-03-2005 02:24 PM

OMG I loved this game! I NEED MORE I TELL YA!!!!!!!!!

Cowowar 17-03-2005 08:26 PM

glad u guys liked it. :ok:

superjenn 18-03-2005 07:00 PM

:Brain: Sweet deal. I beat this game in the 7th grade, then became something of a smalltown hint-line. (Plus, I loaned out my disks when I was 12 or 13. That proved to be a bad decision, since I wasn't able to play again till now!)

Spoonman 18-03-2005 08:11 PM

If there's one thing I've learned while playing *any* game really it's to SAVE OFTEN. Do that and surprise-your-dead-adventures get a lot less frustrating. Allthough the fact that you're dead by itself rather then the fact you'll have to start over does get annoying from time to time. But with Xanth I didn't find it that frustrating at all. Just part of making the right decisions.

Berad 12-05-2005 11:41 AM

I'm stuck at the fading door. Can someone help me out, please?

-Oh nevermind, I've found the walkthrough bit on the site.

DarkEternal 18-05-2005 11:16 PM

My greatest problem is that it seems I found a bug. It is in the part with Pyotr. I tried as hard as I can, but I can not pass the part where you need to take the curse from Sasha. So, finally succumbing I looked into the walkthrough only to see that indeed I have a bug. The bug is that I could not "Wear" the Wax Lips, but just have the option of "Look".

Needless to say, I am rather stuck now, and the only alternative is starting over...which I will in some distant future I suppose.

thegoodsyo 06-06-2005 10:36 PM

i can't get the program to download...it says that the web address is not found when i click "get it". Is there something wrong with it?

Brittany 24-06-2005 01:11 AM

I loved this game!! It was very charming with pretty good graphics and I loved the pun puzzles "Pain Be Gone" mwahaha. I loved it!

Coldguardian 15-11-2005 10:13 PM

liked the game too, even if it was a bit difficult for me (as a german) to solve all those word jokes, but i managed it when i was about 18 or something... i would had rated it 4, its quite amusing ;)

Foofy 16-08-2006 03:42 AM

Damn, this game was a ton of fun back in the day. I also remeber getting the free book with this.. One of the better games of this kind for sure.....

Meleu 10-09-2006 01:38 AM

Hi! Im having problems with gettnig both the sound and music going at the same time. Could someone please help me with this? I am using DOSBOX also and it still doesnt help.

Thanks in advance.

The Fifth Horseman 11-09-2006 12:16 PM

There is a number of FAQ's for DosBox. I suggest you get familiar with them.

[/b]

Its only the ONE game that does it.
I know how to use fricken DosBox

The Fifth Horseman 13-09-2006 04:05 PM

Then you should also know how to change your soundcard emulation options. I suggest Sound Blaster Pro 2, Sound Blaster Pro 1 if that fails.

Make sure the ingame config is correctly configured in regards to the emulated soundcard type, IRQ, DMA and adress.

Akira 06-03-2009 06:54 PM

This wasn't as difficult as I was expecting, I only needed to consult the walkthrough a couple times (which I probably wouldn't even of have to have done if I was just more patient, lol).
It was fun, but the ending left me somewhat empty inside... Like, why did Nada want to be rid of magic so much? (it seems like she knew what would happen with her "enjoy magic while you can" statement). I just wish it wrapped up things a little better.

plutonick 20-03-2009 01:12 PM

anyone know if there is a difference between the floppy and cd version of the game?

El Quia 20-03-2009 02:20 PM

I love this game. The puns are lovely (yeah, I like puns. So what? ;P) and the graphics are a lot more beautiful than a lot of bleeding edge 3d games. Also, they fit the game perfectly, even the whimsical nature of the land of Xanth.

Thanks to this game I discovered the Xanth books series and, although I didn't read them all (I stopped around the seventh book, I think), I loved the ones that I have read.

The game maybe isn't very difficult, but is throughly enjoyable. It has a special charm that I didn't find in other games. It is very unique, and I fell in love with the characters and the game world. I haven't experienced the same thing with no other game, not even another Legend game. That doesn't mean that I didn't ever enjoyed a game again, but the particular experience that this game meant was only lived with this one. I recommend it to everyone to give it a try. Even those that don't like puns ;P

elegra 21-03-2009 07:40 PM

I loved the books and I really enjoyed the game, this was a really excelent game, just the right amount of challenge for me :)

Paco 09-04-2009 01:31 PM

Please let me know if anybody of you know Solution to the Game Blocks and Pentominoes. I can then add it as Extra so everbody can solve the Puzzle without trying it first or search the Internet for a Solution. ^^

g3rt 14-12-2009 12:02 AM

Great game. The reviewer is a dork; there are absolutely no unfair or particular hard riddles in this game. must have been his first click & point adventure, maybe, abandonia shouldn't let such people write a review. makes so sense. lovely game, 5 points.

Simoneer 02-01-2010 06:48 PM

The newspost about it made me lol. Especially because that first section is just so true.

IS THE SETUP FILE MISSING?

There is no setup in this game? :(
There is 1 exe file, only! There aren't any more start files!
How can I change the sound cards? :oh:

You probably can't, the setup was done when the game was installed. There doesn't even seem to be any configuration file that is used to save the setup information.

I actually have the CD version of this game and it has install.exe and an ini-file that holds the selected options.

Smiling Spectre 05-07-2017 08:19 AM

Well, if ini is missed, chances are it will be created after first start. :) But I didn't check this game.

slx 05-07-2017 12:14 PM

Yes, the ini file missing. It does not created after the first launch.
I copied the ini from the installed CD version but the FDD version doesn't use it!

Edit:
I got the install version of this game.
This game supports the following sound cards for music
Adlib, Soundblaster and ROLAND
and for sound effects
PC Speaker, Adlib and Soundblaster.
The install makes a bat file what contains this for my config:
XANTH MT32 2 330 BLASTER 7 220
So, if you haven't got the install file then you have to make a bat file if you want to use other sound cards, too.

Hmmm ... I find your criticism of the reviewer unfair. I have no intention of arguing with you, after all it’s been a long time since you’ve posted, but you should know what Adventure games are like.

For example, many of the things you would not have imagined would use them for that purpose. A New Beginning, Machinarium, Maniac Mansion, Rex Nebular, Syberia, Syberia II (some puzzles are difficult), The Day of the Tentacle, The Legend of Kyrandia II, The Return of The Phantom of the Opera, etc.

And without Walkthrough, the game gets exasperating as you test all possibilities to keep progressing in the game. And who never got stuck in a puzzle in an Adventure game? I do not think an adventure game should become a Combinatorial Analysis or anything. :smugulon:

You are grave digger, you know? :) But nevermind.

Actually, you are unfair too.

Ideal adventure game _must_ have logical solution to the every puzzle, right. But it not implies that this solution must be _easy_ one. For example, relatively recent game Fez is perfectly logical - only some of its puzzles requires external sources, like barcode readers and external sites consulting. I don't like such sorts of puzzles - but it still "right" puzzles nonetheless.

Also, if game have occasional "trial and error" puzzle, it's nothing wrong too. While not _every_ puzzle like that, or there is no clue what to do at all.

My personal "favorites" in that relations are Discworld and Deponia games. (First one from series, in both cases). They are plain bad in puzzle design and must be erased from human memory. :)

I don't know what you're saying but I like you so I agree! For example I do not get the game Q+bert yet I like the cute long nose teddy bert so I have a backup copy#

Jesus Christ! Bless GOD, Jesus Christ, Mary, and The Holy Spirit# Then bless my real mom Huong Thi Vu. Honours to my real mom Huong Thi Vu and my real dad Nguyen Binh Thuy. Congratulations to my real two sisters Nguyen Khoa Thuyen and Nguyen Khoa Thi. I, Nguyen Khoa Tien, have put my personal copy of the game in the ISO cellar for you cool kids# So download it and give me everything you have. hehe j/k

Yes, I agree with you. I just did not like the “boy” calling him donkey. I read and liked the review.

Deponia... (Abandonia, Albânia, Antônia, Caledônia, Estônia, Lapônia, Letônia, Lituânia, Macedônia, Teutônia, etc. :tease:) The game A New Beginner is a hard nut to crack without a walkthrough. :wall: How about the final Puzzles of the Machinarium? And the final Puzzle of the game Legend of Kyrandia II? :wall: :hairpull:

Well, I would prefer more logical Puzzles like Klotski, LaserTank, Challenge of the Ancient Empires! while Adventure games should have “easier” Puzzles.
