Dark Sun [WIP - red_avatar]
It's been a long time since I've played Dark Sun, but I remember having fun when I did. The second one in particular was good (although I understand it had a major bug).
If anyone remembers the Pool of Radiance games, I believe this had the same developer, but Dark Sun was more of a cross between Pool of Radiance and Baldur's Gate. |
Hehe, Dark Sun's fun :) Ever tried Al Qadim: The Genie's Curse? It's by SSI too and uses more or less the same system, but to me, is way more fun, although it's more linear than both Dark Suns.
|
Nope, I had never heard of Al Qadim. But I just checked out a review and it does look very similar. Hopefully that one will make it on here soon, if it qualifies as Abandonware.
|
It does? Then I'll see if I can find it, but I don't really have time to write reviews :( If I did, there'd be alot more games up already :D If I find it, will you write a review then?
|
Found it and am testing it now (after noticing that The Black Cauldron's zipfile was corrupted and I had to redownload it from a different source, I'm checking everything up twice), along with the copy protection codes.
Edit: Tested and uploaded. |
Whoa! I'm not asking anyone to write a review, and I don't know if this game qualifies as Abandonware (no idea how to validate that). If it does, then I'll check it out once it becomes available.
|
I don't think Al Qadim and Dark Sun - Shattered Lands are abandonware yet.
|
you can get both DS1 and DS2 at this site www.darksunworld.com :ok:
On a side note it's in the works to make a new dark sun online game. I downloaded the alpha and it's looking pretty good. BTW This Site absolutly rocks. Every favorite game of mine from the past is here. Thanks a ton :w00t: |
You can also get the Dark Sun games and Al-Qadim from http://www.cdaccess.com/html/quick/ad&dmastpr.htm
(Might be a good idea to remove the Al-Qadim download from the main site..) |
Yes yes I knew someone was going to say something about cdaccess. The site I mentioned has the same deal as the space quest site where you can get the space quest games or it's something similiar because they have been running strong for over 2 years now. But if I blundered by putting the website on the board I apologize in advance and buy everyone a round of brews
|
OK i have this old game in my head that i really want to play again.
Canīt really remember alot about it, Canīt remember if the playing style is strategy og ultima underworld style. I just remember a few things about the beginning. You begin in a dungeon with a small party and one of them is a orange insect of some kind, Looks a lot like a praying mantis. And one of the first tasks you have to do is fight a big beast (minotaur or sumthing) in a closed arena. Thatīs it :S hope that someone else will know it and help me out. One other thing. It came out about the same time as Ufo: Enemy Unknown. |
The mantis-part and dungeon-part makes me think it's one of the Dark Suns, but fighting a single enemy in there... a minotaur on top... makes me doubt 'bout it.
|
I'd go with Dark Sun too. Fits the description, especially the preying mantis hero.
|
Yup, Dark Sun is the one with the praying mantis creature. It's called a Tri-Kreen by the way. And that "minotaur"-thingie was probably one of that worlds bear (a heavy mutation with scales and horns, often walking on two).
Dark Sun was the first campaign setting I bought for AD&D, so forgive me if I sound like a nostalgic geek! :D You can find both Dark Sun games over at Home of the Underdogs in case you're intrested. |
thx all, especially Gormash for the link ;)
wasnīt really sure about that minotaur but remembered that it was big and ugly :D edit: damn, can only find a buy link ;) i have it somewhere... but.... ALOT of old boxes with alot of dust doesnīt interest me that much, but the last time i went through them i stopped on the first one and it took me about 2months to play it :D It was my Sinclair ZX spectrum box :D with the printer and everything :D |
You have Dark Sun on Sinclair ZX? :eeeeeh:
Isn't that computer a little (if not far) too weak for the game?.. |
What i ment was that i have a lot of boxes with old stuff in them. And last time i started to go through them it took me 2months just to go through the first one because that one had my Sinclair and Sinclair games in them.. Further in (5-6boxes in total) lies Dark Sun :D
|
if i was you id start with the boxes at the back LOL - you could make a fortune on ebay in antique computer games and equipment section LOL.
|
I would never sell my Sinclair stuff :D too fun to play, just hate that casette player :D
in the sinclair box are.. well ALOT of games, 2x computers (ZX Spectrum) a printer for them, couple of books that explain how to program in them and ofcours the original casetteplayers |
Dark Sun 1 - Shattered Lands
Hi there,
I'm new to this site :bye: so I am not entirely sure how this requesting thing works or how I can find out if a game is abandonware or not, but I would highly recommend Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (here is a link to the entry in a German computer game museum (but you can switch language to English)). It was published in 1993 by SSI (Strategic Simulations Inc.) and is based in the AD&D world of Dark Sun. It is a great RPG which I would love to be able to play one more time and maybe it is possible for you to put it on your site. I couldn't find it so far in the web. I any case, I think this site is just great, I found so many games I had been looking for forever, not even knowing their names, so I am also a bit ashamed to ask for even more in my first post. Cheers Zarkumo |
I agree with you man.
I played this game when it was released and it was addictive enough to keep me hooked till the end. I however couldnt finish it coz the final battle proved too much for me. |

As for Dark Sun 2 : Wake of the ravager, it's even harder to find and the only version i could get was so full of bugs i didn't even play more than a couple of hours. :ranting: |
Thanks alot, will check them out
|
Hi,
I was wondering if it's possible to check or re-check the status of Strategic Simulation inc.'s rpg Dark Sun: Shattered lands. It was released in '94 (The same year as it's engine predecessor Al-Qadim The Genies Curse, which is on this site :) ) The parent companies website IGN has an entry for it, and seems to point to a free resource to download it, however the website it links to doesn't actually contain the game... Not sure what they're trying to say there. It is also hosted for download on a site which seemed to be developing the concept for online play (it appears as if they had the blessing of Strategic Simulation) but it looks like the project has died. I believe it's also hosted on HOTU, not that that means much ;) I was just wondering because I think it would be great to have this game alongside Al Qadim to show how this particular company developed the series. Thanks :D |
Since it is sold here no further research is needed.
[edit] HOTU also has a buy link, and that means much. [/edit] |
Probably we will never see this game on Abandonia.
67 in Stock  |
I wonder what makes them so anal about this one and not Al Qadim....
Thanks for the amazingly quick response btw :) |
Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (1993) by Strategic Simulations, Inc.:
Still Sold But the second one is Abandonware: Dark Sun 2: Wake of the Ravager (1994) by Mindscape Inc. Abandonware |
Dark Sun 2: Wake of the Ravager
Browsing on other abandonware sites (I'm a betrayar!) I found these two old SSI RPG's.
They're settled in the "Dark Sun" world for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Now... About the games you'll can tell whatever you wish (The movemente is real time, the fight is turn based: when you fight you can't move the mouse pointer, but when is your turn the pointer will do ALL the movement that you done while you was waiting!)... :bleh: But tell me about another game in which you move into a fantasy world mixed with afterbomb science fiction (See Fallout) setting (Setting who keep admit radioactive mutants too!), a world with Half Jiants (Sic. Half man-Half Jiant), Half-Dwarves (AKA "Muls"), hairless dwarves, 2m tall elves and (Dulcis in fundo), Tree Kreens (Mantis men). The game permit the use of magic and psionics powers  Lets found 20Mb to post them? |
I've actually asked for Shattered Lands a few times, but as far as I know it's still being sold in a few places, which is a shame, because it's one of my favourite games. In regards to Wake Of The Ravager, you're insane, that game was so buggy it was nearly unplayable, and even with todays patches its still horribly buggy.
