I must say I got used to typing commands instead of using function keys.

These were the days...
"Black cauldron", "Space Quest", "Quest for Glory" - what these old games have in common is immersive atmosphere present day, high-budget productions with high-powered graphics lack. For these reason, I gave this game 4.

I think this game was intended to be played by children, so the function key controls are for ease of play.

This filename is pretty dubious, what with the commas and all... The link is broken anyhow!

You can also get this from:

http://www.allowe.com/More/download.htm

which I found by reading the Technical Note at the bottom of the review...

this reminds me of hugo LOL! :guns:

You dont have to quench his thirst every few screens. I remember playing this on my old 386 back in the day... use MoSlo or something of the sort because it's probably the CPU screen making that happen. The thirsty/hungry thing should only realistically happen every 10-15 minutes.

There's also a LOT of endings to this beast. I got them all back in the day... lots of different solutions to puzzles. Good stuff.

rabadi 20-02-2005 11:18 AM

This game reminds me of the comic version of the Disney movie The Black Cauldron I once read. I also played this game before, but not this original version. I played the remake version instead. The remake version uses the graphics from the original, so the graphics are exactly the same as depicted in the screenshots in the review, but instead of typing the remake uses point and click interface. I must say I prefer that one, only because I am such a lazy sort that prefers to point and click, avoiding typing

NEWGUY 20-02-2005 09:33 PM

I can play the game but I can't read any of the text. Can anyone help?

well...first you should enroll in some remedial classes where they teach you the alphabet, and then... :ok: What exactly is the problem?

NEWGUY 21-02-2005 01:23 AM

NICE! REEEL NICE!
The problem is that the text is all blurry unless I'm in the menus and the text is highlighted. It almost looks like a screen flicker, but I'm not sure what the cause is.

Just a minor correction on whoever uploaded it's part. The movie was based on a book, the same book this game was based on, I've read the Black Cauldron books, good fantasy series, this is pretty weird though.

A little correction to your correction - the movie's based (fairly loosely) on the first two books of the Prydain Chronicles ('The Book of Three' and 'The Black Cauldron'), and the game based on the movie.

Disney made some rather questionable (IMHO) deviations from the book in many ways, I think. I haven't actually seen the whole movie though. Might be a decent film in its own right.

gildedgirth 21-02-2005 04:06 PM

Prydain Chronicles. Wow that brings back memories. I read those as a small kid but really loved that series. It was my first taste of reading an epic fantasy. I wonder how well those books would hold up to an adult. Anyway, now I gotta check out this game.

rabadi 21-02-2005 11:54 PM

For those who might care to know, if I am not mistaken ('cause I did not know it myself, rather someone told me about it a long time ago), the word "Prydain" is an old pronunciation of the word "Britain."

Ed 22-02-2005 12:03 AM

I remember a food wallet or something, so you never had to find food, it was under a bridge or something, I had the remake version, so it may not be in the original version.but that game was sweet!

wendymaree 23-02-2005 04:29 AM

The download link is working again for those of you who wish to do the d/l thing.

Pretty well, actually. Except Gurgi is even more annoying now, if that's possible. Oh well, at least that means Eilwony is twice as hot.

Someone turned this game into a point and clicker with Adventure Game Studio. Same graphics and script, but the interface has been replaced, which is a big improvement.

Zombie, of course it's just like Peasants' Quest. Where do you think the Brothers (I can never remember their names) got their inspiration from? King's Quest and such, that's where.

TOSS BABY

There is an open sourced remake of Black Cauldron at http://tg_comics.tripod.com/bc.html using AGS for Windows wich runs fine with wine snapshot 20050310.

This was my first computer game.. no that is only half true - my first PROGRAM, *ever*. I must have been about 6 years old at the time. I remember the very day. Hard to believe now but I can't describe the feelings I have from just looking at the map. Crazy! I love abandonware! Keep up the great work everyone! :)

Me on the other hand love to use function keys, cause it's kinda hard then computer understands 5 sentences and you don't know them, so then you try about 50 sentences... it's hard to imagine...

yeah...imagine this happening. horned king get henwen, you come in to late, horned king goes for cauldron, eiddileg comes and transports you to house with cauldrons, witches do not give you cauldron, you slay 2 witches with sword, third gives you cauldron, you hear footsteps, you throw witch into cauldron, she gets out cause she's a ghost, you hide in corner, comes horned king, you kick him into cauldron, get out, use eiddileg's wind and win game.

that would be funny

One of my favorite websites.

Hints Here

The movie was barely based on the books. It's called the Black Cauldron, but really has nothing in common with the book of the same name. The movie and game are more tied to the book titled "The Book of Three." And even then the books are a lot different.

This was one of my favorite games growing up. It's probably the game that got me addicted to computer games and Sierra adventure games. I was amazed by it. Its simplicity is made up by unique gameplay elements and a real sense of adventure and varied locales. The game is difficult too and it's very easy to die or make the game unwinnable. It's even harder to actually win with the best ending, especially without any guidance. I don't know if having a manual helps or seeing the movie.

:sos: Can someone help me save my game... Whenever I go to save it won't let me :sos:

Well, being that my SN is Taran, i think it's plausible to discern that I got my name FROM Lloyd Alexander's books. And being that I'm such a geek that i would call myself Taran, it's also plausible to discern that i have a good opinion on the Movie and/or games. Basically it's like this. Disney Effed up. Watching the movie after reading the books made me so mad that i refuse to play games like this that pretty much state they're based off the movie (Go Go Gadget Run-on Sentence!). The Black Cauldron wasn't even mentioned until the second book, and even then, many key characters were left out and/or introduced in completely skewed ways. In Essence, the movie portrays a completely different story than what Mr Alexander wrote. The only things they have in common is 1) The names of the characters/objects and 2) see number 1. ok, that's enough Ranting... enjoy the game if you must, but only do so if you're more open minded than I am regarding Mr Alexander's Creation.

This is the game that really got me into computer games, especially Sierra games. I played it a ton as a kid. It's not perfect, but there's a lot about it that I still appreciate to this day.
