I think this can help everyone that uses the net.
Opera Web Browser With the following:
|
And what are your views on Firefox?
|
I find Opera to be quite bloated as compared to Firefox. And furthermore, it is missing a few features which I find essential, such as being able to Cmd-~ to cycle through my windows. Plus, the rendering engine does some odd things to a good many webpages, especially with text size. And the popup blocker is too restrictive (blocks links that open in new windows). Firefox has better plugins too.
So, I prefer firefox. But Opera's certainly better than IE. |
I never understood the whole thing against IE. What actual difference does your web browser make?
I used PopUpCop until XP Service Pack 2, which deals with pop-ups rather nicely. I havn't had a single virus or piece of spyware or adware on my machine since I got a good firewall, and I'm sorry, but with a cable modem my brower isn't gonna affect speed much. I don't care what my browser looks like, I don't mind going to google to do my searches, I don't mind just clicking on the damn taskbar to switch to an open site. I use Trillian for all of my chatting (well, all of my fiancee's chatting) needs. So what do Opera and Firefox have to offer that I don't already have and am perfectly happy with using IE? EDIT: The way I see it, the whole argument is one of "anti-conformity" and some kind of rebellion against Big Ol' Scary Microsoft. I'm glad there's a selection now when it comes to many things in the software/application world, but I don't see any sort of real improvement or important difference between any of the browers on the market right now. None of them are horrible, but none of them are really any better than the others. It really just seems to be a bunch of bandwagon jumping bullshit mixed with a healthy dose of hatred and jealousy for a man, and a company, which is infinately more successful than you are. |
i think a funny image is in order:

And if you don't switch browsers because IE is "good enough", you're just being stubborn. If you could trade in your current computer and get a faster one for free that still had all of your files, you'd take it. I can see where you might not care about additional features like tabbed browsing, built in pop-up blocking without additional software, easy blocking of images, lack of security exploits, frequent updates which improve the browser, or themes, but it is either ignorant or stubborn to say that there is no difference in performance from browser to browser. |
Two questions.
Is Firefox free? And how big a download is it? N.B. Obviously if it's a no for the first answer then I won't need an answer for the second. |
OK, how about this
No difference in performance that's visible by the human eye, or percievable by the mind's eye. Better? It takes me a fraction of a second to load a new page that hasn't been cached yet, and if it were to take longer, I'm not an impatient man who thinks that a second is too long for me to wait. If someone gave me a free computer that was better than this one, I'd wonder where the hell they found parts that are still weeks in development... How does stubbonness come into play, I might ask? I like what I've got. If it actually was better, I'd change, sure, but insofar I see no clear reason WHY it's better, except for things I don't actually need. EDIT: I have just downloaded the newest versions of FireFox and Opera. I will now install and demo both of them, one at a time, and return with a verdict. |
Since you jsut downloaded them I'll assume they are free. :D

Ok, Firefox.
So far, it's slow. REALLY slow. Maybe some other people have a better speed, but on this machine, it's slow. Scrolling, loading, even the typing is much slower than with IE. I'm running under the same conditions as normal, nothing extra running. A bad start, really. Image quality is the same, and there's this really annoying placeholder image while the actual images load. I have uninstalled Firefox, after having to dive for Add/Remove programs, since it didn't offer me the chance from the start menu, which is another strike. Now I'm using Opera. It too is slower. The fact that I have to PAY to get rid of a rather annoying banner is another negative, and the GUI itself is large and intrusive. It's reminicent of AOL, which I have a special place in my heart for, right next to my malice and bitterness. It offers me a lot of functions which I neither want, nor need. It didn't offer to use my pre-existing settings for e-mail and favorites, which FireFox did, but that's not that big of a deal. OK I have given both of them a chance, and right off the bat I've seen one thing: Slowdown. LOTS of slowdown. Firefox was little different in appearance and function than IE, just a lot slower. Opera gives me bad flashbacks to AOL, and is a pay product to boot, along with the slowdown. I'm sorry, but IE does what I want it to do in a satisfactory manner, while these just give me things I don't need or already have. Opera has been uninstalled. It too required me to go to Add/Remove Programs, AND it informed me that some parts of it's code could not be removed because they are "now part of my crucial .ini files", meaning I'm gonna have to go in with some anti-ad programs and my own computer skills to fish them out. Sorry, but I like IE. I've given them both a shot, spending some, rather limited, time with each. They exhibited the opposite of your claims to speed-ups, which was the major part of the switch argument. |
Oh maybe I dont want them then.
Did FireFox leave parts of it's code in your "crucial .ini files" ? |
Whoohoo. Another browser comparison topic, which will end in a spam-flooded flame-war in which everyone defends hir or hers favourite!!!
Mine's FireFox, but I sometimes use IE as well. I've even recently browsed the web with Arachne, which is a DOS (wh00t) graphical browser! |
Firefox slow?
For me it's the opposite!! IE takes ages loading for me! I haven't tried Opera, though. I'm happy with Firefox, so I doubt I will. I only use IE if I really have to. |
I just find IE to be... clunky. Having all those windows everywhere and all different sizes, it's just so much neater. I also like the extensions you can install, such as a built in downlaod accelerator and FTP client. The themes are also good (not all of them are horrible and multi-coloured :D).
All in all Firefox just seems more professional and when I'm forced to use IE (at school and things) everything's so messy. (Plus fight against the evil Microsoft corporation ) |
Oh yes, yet another browser topic ;)
Well, I'm using Opera. One day I tried it and was quite fond of it, with the built-in search, page scaling, nice skins and the overall feel to it. I'm sure you can configure Firefox to look and behave pretty much the same, but I got used to Opera now so I'm sticking with it. :) |
Yeah I've moved on to using Firefox. I don't think I'll ever use IE again. I thought about Opera, but the thought of ads there seems really dumb, and I don't want to pirate it. I like firefox because of its customisation and extensibility.
|
I too enjoy using Firefox a lot more than IE, I feel much more safer browsing with the product, the extensions that there are for the program are very nice, plus tabbed browsing is very nice to use, rather than having multiple windows of a browser open.
This has prob been mentioned here's a link to speed up firefox http://iraszl.brinkster.net/creativebits/2...up-firefox.html |
Sorry, but the way I see it, if I have to go and edit chunks of code to make it run as well as IE on my machine, then it's defeating the purpose of "updating".
|
I use IE and I would never use it without first playing with the security option and disabling Flash and Java. I guess you can call that "updating" too.
|
Not really, no.
Editing Firefox for speed involves actually editing the code of the broswer. Turning off Java/Flash is an option in the tools tab. There's a SLIGHT difference. |
Any one else find it ironic that the debate here is geared around the speed and efficiency of a given browser on a site that is dedicated to games of a by-gone age?
Just wondering... |
....
HA! Awsome. Wouldn't have seen that until you mentioned it. |
Now you know it. :ok:

If we have fast browser we can get to our slow games much faster which therefore creates medium games. |
I bow to the irrefutable logic of your argument.
(Unless of course, you use IE - in which case your games'll be slower than when they were originally released.) :D |
Quote:
What does irrefutable mean? It is a compliment right? |
I tried Opera and I couldnt acses my Yahoo mail. But I prefer Firefox mainly because it tells me what are the plug ins that I need to download. :)
|
I normally use firefox now, but on this laptop that one of my parent's friends has brought its IE! EEEK! It's currently saying 0 popups blocked.. hehehehe
|
I installed Opera and find out that there are too many adverts (about buying it), cuz I didn't have the money for bought version, so I switched to Firefox and it's awesome! Better than IE! :Brain:
Believe me or not! |
i've tried a lot of browsers and the best reliable browser i've found is Mozilla Firefox.... it still has some problems but im sure it's simply the BEST! before trying FF, i've been using Opera fopr about... 1 whole year..... but then when i've tried FF, i moved to it inmediatly..... really great browser....
|
I use Netscape; the mostly viruses delete your internet explorer, firefox, opera and NOT Netscape

I like Opera, but i never tried Firefox, and at the moment i'm using IE, because of technical problems  |
Hehe Netscape :[img]http://www.abandonia.com/forum/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' />. Sorry, the last I heard, Netscape was pretty dodgy. I would prefer to have a reliable browser. But each to their own ;).
|
INTERNET EXPLORER is the most dodgy browser!!!
|
I thought I heard that the latest Netscape version is based like on the Mozilla 1.7x engine, and that's a pretty secure browser as well.
|
firefox is a branch of the mozilla browser (which includes browser and mail client) and firefox is just the browser part of mozilla modified (its the same with the thunderbird mail client). the mozilla browser suite is based on netscape source. firefox was originally called firebird as well :P
|
One of my friends has this image in his signature on one of p2p forums: http://img29.exs.cx/img29/388/no_ie.gif
This tells everything. Opera has its pros and Firefox has its good sides. Generally, anything is good, apart from IE. |
Mozilla Firefox.
|
I used to have IE, and used to be drowned in pop-ups.
Now I have Firefox, and pop-ups are but a memory. Nothing but facts, as Dickens said in "Hard Times". And the fact is, Mozilla Firefox is an helluva browser :ok: |
Prior to SP2 for WinXP, IE provides the heaven for all backdoors and security holes for crackers and hackers. After SP2, I don't know. Maybe IE is much more secure now. Then again, maybe not.
Either way, I moved to Opera long time ago, and I'm not interested in using IE again. If only I can uninstall it from my computer, I will. Opera is also way faster than IE in my experience. |

However, in my Penguin classics edition of Oliver Twist, on page 64, I found this: "Internet Explorer?" exclaimed Fagin. "A pox on your Microsoft graces! Thee shalt use Opera, boy, or I shall take thee by the scruffs and box thee sideways!" Truly, Dickens was ahead of his time. |
I use Firefox on both my Linux and Windowz Box. In my opinion, firefox is the ONLY webbrowser.
For my G4 Mac.... its Saffari. I have a few gripes about Saffari, but with each release it gets better. A good user devel community helps alot. Opera is bulky in my opinion. But then again..... that is only my opinion :D Things can always change though..... we never really know what shore the tides of computing will wash us to next.... Its a rapidly rising and vicious ocean isnt it? |
