Mapping Abandonia

So with portal being recently free. (it not free now anymore)
Finding out the game is short
And figuring out the Source SDK's Hammer World editor is EASY.

I decided to build a map For Abandonia.
This will be a sort of Office Idea.
A huge building which includes.

A main lobby representing the Main page.
A Games Hall/library to represent all the game pages (combined?)
Community Lobby's => Forum
Meeting Rooms => Threads, ChatBox, Staff forums etc.

And MORE.

Right now it's just an insane Idea, but a fun one. :)

Oh and one minor Detail on this Idea.
The final map will be HUGE!!

Although I might design it in part's, including floor after floor as more Idea's pop in my head or are offered in here.

I recommend doing an admin room. Not a room where our admins would be, but a room with special buttons which cause stuff to happen. Say, sudden zombie invasion.

Try this Star Trek map for good example. It has an admin room that turns on alerts, causes meteor attack and there's an option for klingon attack too, not to mention the engineering room where you can turn off lights, life support and activate self-destruction. There's also several other buttons on the bridge and all around the ship.

Very very cool GTX :D

GTX2GvO 21-09-2011 11:25 AM

Finished off the preliminary of the first floor.
The main Lobby.
It's not much yet, but at least you see where the hell you're going. :)

Here is the link to the map.
Pick the abandonia.bsp file.
*RENAME the map to abandonia.bsp when you want to use it. (removing the "_0.1" from the name)

And I already did a bit of comicing. :perv:

GTX2GvO 21-09-2011 09:43 PM

Added a second floor
Had to FULLY redo the windows on the second floor.
(the new windows are technically better)

Changed the wall colors on both floors.
(still meant to represent the main page(s), thus white)

Added stairs to the second floor.
Not much else yet. It's still all quite empty.

Anyway Here is the map.

GTX2GvO 22-09-2011 11:43 AM

Added a third floor.
Updated the map links on the previous posts.
Make sure you grab the abandonia.bsp file.
The others are older versions and need to be renamed to abandonia.bsp if you want to use them.

Also added a central desk.
2 chairs
2 Soda machines
In the main lobby. :)

If you keep building, I just might get inspiration for creating a first-person logical adventure or something :)

GTX2GvO 23-09-2011 09:13 AM

OK. Finished Adding floors for now. (there are 9 NINE! Floors now)

4 Above surface floors representing the main site.
(brightly white colored walls with only the mail lobby showing the AB color on the floor)

5 Below surface floors representing the Forums.
(With walls, ceilings and floors having textures that resemble the Forums)

I also added some outside space (above surface)

I also removed ALL the Light entities.
(except for the spots being lighted up, everything was pitch dark)

Here is a general Layout of how I am going to organize things
Code:

_________________________________________________________________
Updaters/administration level. In here you will find the
tools/pages that the updaters use for adding games and extra's
_________________________________________________________________
Services level. In here you can find the Gamebooks, Programs,
and Other non-game pages open for site visitors.
_________________________________________________________________
Games Library. All the games on site as a huge library!
Downloadable games can be "lended out" protected ones not.
_________________________________________________________________
Main Lobby/page. The front page, including the screenshot quiz,
| That world map thing and of course the recent updates news.    | Ground level
|_________________________________________________________________|_____________
Forum main index. The place for the Usercontrol panel,
search, members/staff list and of course the chat box
_________________________________________________________________
The forums/threads. In here you can find the user accessible
forum sections like Abandonia.com & Community Chatterbox
_________________________________________________________________
ISO Cellar. A separate Library like floor for all the ISO's in
that forum.
_________________________________________________________________
Updates Workflow. The Forums within that section for the
users that have access for that section.
_________________________________________________________________
Staff Floor. Includes Staff forums, Graveyard,
Moderator/Admin tools.
_________________________________________________________________

:mhh: Now I think of it. I could still add a "Server floor" below the staff floor.
Representing the actual data server. (not the access to it via update controlls)

Anyway. this amount of floors will be good for now.
I now have to work on the individual floor-plans, (moving the walls)
Adding Doors, tables and stuff like that, (that actually WORKS!)
And some sort of admin controls etc. (like a phone to call studentis)

You can grab the current map in This Mediafire folder.
Grab the abandonia.bsp file. That's the latest.
Any map with "_##" are older versions.

GTX2GvO 23-09-2011 11:24 AM

For those who want to play this in Portal.

Download the .bmz file from the Mediafire folder and import that bonus map.
If I later release a newer version of the map.
Locate the imported abandonia.bsp and replace it with the newer version. :)

Should work.

marko river 23-09-2011 01:18 PM

Just want to check, is it Portal or Portal 2? I'm guessing 2, but it's always smarter to ask.

GTX2GvO 23-09-2011 01:33 PM

Nope, just Portal 1.
You know the one that was free get till the 20th of september.

But with the rather basic mapping I think It could work in portal 2 as well.

(But I'm mostly focusing on getting it to work in Garry's Mod / Portal1)

marko river 23-09-2011 01:52 PM

Well, that's awesome. I surely can't run 2 on my old PC. Might start playing it soon. Didn't know about releasing for free. Should I get that release in order to run... and have that Garry's mod included?

What else can you do with that mod? Can you create events and similar, so perhaps really creating a puzzle?

TheChosen 23-09-2011 02:10 PM

Map layout looks good, but its very white now. Try toning the white down a bit so I can see the walls properly.
Also, can you switch windows to the types that broke? Much cooler and then everyone can jump out of the building through it.

I'm planning to add Wall papers and stuff (the site ad's)
Also when all the stuff is in, you might not see all the walls, thus lowering the overall white.
But also keep in mind that the main pages have white as the base color.

Right now the windows are brushes (like the walls) that means they are SOLID object.
To do what you want, I might need to change them (Replace!) for entities Like the player and weapons and soda machine)

You need either Garry's Mod OR Portal to run this.
Also Portal was only available for free TILL the 20th of september.
It Costs $/€ 8,99 now.

GTX2GvO 25-09-2011 07:01 PM

Some "Big" changes in the current version.

- You can now shatter the glass. (you can jump out when jumping crouched)
- added some weapons & a hevsuit behind the main counter (incl. portalgun!)*
- Created a Site "My Account Page" room on Lobby floor.
- Placed a bunch of file cabinets on the first floor.
- Created a Chatbox Room on the first "forum floor"
- Replaced all carpets to be the same red carpet. (site and forum floors)
- Changed the site floor ceilings to a darker grey texture. (it's a metal ceiling now. ^_^ )

There is still enough to do. But this is enough for today. :)

*When playing with Garry's mod use THIS to use the portalgun. (and you need to own portal too!!)
For people playing in portal. Only the portalgun is placed correctly! I don't know how to fix the rest. (if possible)
And the hevsuit is hidden. So don't come in to say it isn't there. IT IS THERE!

That is all.

GTX2GvO 27-09-2011 02:18 PM

Latest version has the area behind the bar elevated. (looks better and real).

Started work on some toilet rooms (just for having them in the building)
Added some doors (main entrance and toilet rooms)

GTX2GvO 28-09-2011 12:35 PM

Finished the toilet rooms.
So anyone comicing can make their characters go to the loo.
(no longer they have to go outside and find a tree to piss against. :p )

Also figured out how them damn doors kinda work.

Next up....
An elevator!
What else did ya think that hole next to the stairs was for? dropping noobs?

Also. I've updated the bmz file too this time. You if you have to import the map you can get the latest in the bmz file. ^_^

everyone else can still use the bsp, which is also the latest version.

GTX2GvO 29-09-2011 12:33 PM

The elevator box is in place, but ehm.. Floating in mid air though.
To make it move (for now) Enter the elevator, press "E" on the button box, press "W" to go up (or "S" down to go down), press the button in the other direction to stop again.
(press either "A", "D" or "E" to release yourself from the elevator button)

Elevator will auto stop @ the top and bottom floor. YOU have to stop it while going up/down.

Note!: If you release yourself from the button, you have to re-use it in order to change direction (or to stop it)

I've also re-added lights. Which, funny enough, makes the place darker. :perv:

GTX2GvO 02-10-2011 06:19 PM

Finished up the work on the elevator's functioning (nearly bugless).
You can now use it to get to the right floor.

There's a slight warning when multiple people want to use the elevator though.

this comic shows the whys. :D

Now I can add (and test) all the next cool stuff with more ease. :)
