I recently aquired a CD version of TESII:Daggerfall... but am now unable to install it.
It doesn't seem to install... at all

Perhaps someone here has already managed to install this game on XP and his nice enough to share his wisdom?

I know this might sound strange but... Did you try DOSBox?

Yeh... using dosbox is a rule of thumb with abandonware isn't it?

No it doesn't work, it opens up and starts trying to install the files to the CD itself.

Ofcoarse this results in a whole lot of "warning: unable to install file to..." messages

EDIT: and its just my luck that the Elderscrolls forums are down at the moment.

I have found that it IS POSSIBLE to run it XP native!
download this 3rd party installer here and run it (with the cd in the drivee). It will install the game and the 1.23 patch. You can then run it straight on XP. Don't use the option to run without the cd though, it doesnt quite work.

Did anyone beat this game? I loved this!!! I hated it and still do when I saw there was no horse or dragon or anything you can ride on in Morrowind. I also hate that you can't increase your view so it's not such a small amount of land revealed around you as you travel. And has anyone gotten a good enchantment detection thing to find stuff as you travel? How effective is that?

Is this normal?

Tried the third party installer and left the option to play without the cd unchecked.

The installation finished and said it found 1562 files, but expected 1593.

Ehhh, disregard. I had those numbers backwards. I had more files than expected which makes sense.

Did you get it to work then? I still can't get it to run even with that 3rd party stuff or dosbox...

Yeah, I kinda have it working. After the 3rd party installer, I used VDMSound to run these three programs: the setup (for sound), the patch, and then the daggerfall executable to run the game. But I don't think this is the wise way to go from reading the threads on this message board:

Sounds like this might cause problems down the road with invisible monsters. Looks like Dosbox is probably the best option, but I haven't tried it yet.

I get it to install without any errors, but once it's done, and I've selected to use the CD, it doesn't want to start. I click on the bat and the exe, but it just goes blank and sits....

You should look at the link to the forum I posted. Following that, I used Dosbox by running a full install, then moved the *.vid files from the cd to my c: drive (after this, I do not use the cd). Also modified z.cfg so the path and pathcd are the same.. c:\dagger\arena2. Created dag.bat (@fall.exe z.cfg) and had dosbox mount c: drive only and run the dag.bat file. Also needed ctrl+F10 after startup to lock the mouse in.

If you're talking about the DFInstaller, the option for running without the cd is a little undependable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it breaks the game.

I managed to install using a third party installer after cleaning my CD. I installed on a Dell laptop successfully (no sound). I then ran daggerfall and installed the sound. The sound works fine as soundblaster choice. I have a number of problems, though, related to the keyboard operation.
First, the arrow keys are all recognized as left shift. I got around this by changing to letter keys.
Second, after changing, I can't get reverse movement to work at all.
The crouch mode works on "D", but I can't move forward or reverse, just turn right or left.
Third problem is levitation. I thought the page up/down keys might not be recognized, so I switched them to g and h. The spell still won't work at all. Any ideas to resolve this would be appreciated.
Fourth, I installed several of the added quest packages. I did the one where a pack of imps fllies away and you have to find them in a dungeon and kill them much like the wandering harpies or giants. One problem, they are all invisible all the time. Is this a bug in the download or what?
