Review & Download

BlackMageJawa 04-12-2004 05:36 PM

So does the download include the two retail episodes as well, or just the first one?

Eagle of Fire 04-12-2004 07:43 PM

Been looking forward to this game for a very long time now. Let's see if I find it as interesting than when I was young.

Well, this game get a vote of 3 on my part, mainly because of the story. If the story wasn't that interesting it would get 2.

Erk.. I just looked at the archive (which I didn't upload btw, that bit got mixed up) and it's only the shareware version. :wall: I have the real one here.

einherjar 05-12-2004 01:32 AM

So that means the full version will be available here? I was starting to regret downloading it when I saw the ending to the first episode.

Tuttle 05-12-2004 01:48 AM

Yeah, as soon as I get an FTP account sorted out with Kosta I'll upload the retail one. It wouldn't be fair to leave it without giving Vel a chance to get revenge. :sneaky:

Tuttle 05-12-2004 12:34 PM

Okay, the full version has been uploaded and should show up on the site soon. :ok: It's over 2 MB, so you should be able to tell from the game's page when it gets updated.

Ignore the prompt to insert Disk 2 during the installation and just hit a key.

Each episode is its own program, so you need to run TD1.EXE, TD2.EXE or TD3.EXE to get the episode you want.

Finally, if you want to keep your saved games from the shareware episode instead of starting over, keep a copy of your current TD.SAV file and put it into the registered games' directory after the install.

Tom Henrik 05-12-2004 01:08 PM

Game swapped. Thanks Tuttle :ok:

Falkus 06-12-2004 06:37 AM

Earlier this evening, I finished Traffic Department 2192. This game had one of the best plots I've ever seen, and some of the best dialogue. I literally could not stop until I beat it.

unclefester 06-12-2004 05:46 PM

I love this game. It has the best plot i've ever seen. However my version (i got it from HOTU) is a little different. There are no dates just radians, the text scrolls no matter what you push and the words in the intro are slightly different

Monkey House 08-12-2004 02:23 PM

I can't get it to work (downloaded the set from this site) tried DosBOX and Radnor for OSX 10.3.6. Got it to load but I get an error with the exe install. It says it's damaged?

Tuttle 08-12-2004 08:44 PM

Make sure you've extracted all the stuff in the zip file somewhere before you run install.exe. Apart from that, I never used DOSBox to install it, only to play it. I just installed it through Windows.

Monkey House 09-12-2004 02:33 AM

Okay after unzipping there is a install.bin, install.dat, install.exe, along with three td123 files. I can't decode the install.bin with stuffit. I can run the exe file in Dosbox but I get an error somethings wrong with the install.exe message. And the Install.dat I haven't even got a clue.

Tuttle 09-12-2004 06:51 AM

The only file you need to work with yourself is install.exe -- it uses the other files.

Try downloading the zip file again in case your download got corrupted, and try installing it outside of DOSBox. Make sure your computer is virus-free as well. If none of that works then I can email you a pre-installed copy, but I don't know if that will work for you either -- you shouldn't be having these problems with the install unless one of those files is corrupted or missing.

Guest 09-12-2004 02:20 PM

Email me the pre-installed copy. Tried redownloading, reunzipping, and reinstalling no luck.

Monkey House 09-12-2004 02:22 PM

Whoops forgot to sign in but send it to my email when you get the chance.

EveofRed 09-12-2004 11:13 PM

I loved the shareware version of this game. loved it. But does anyone else here think that the plot just dies after the first chapter? Some of the missions can be done in less than a minute, and the ending... god, the ending was a huge disappointment ( don't worry, no spoilers :D ) Still, thanks for reuniting me with a lost love guys - I'll just have to take off the rose tinted glasses next time!

The Fifth Horseman 13-12-2004 11:16 AM

:ok:

Kudos for you for getting it on the site. I remember this game well.

Tuttle 23-12-2004 09:36 AM

You need all 6 files in the zip file, not just the .bin file.
  • Download the zip file.
  • Extract all 6 files to the same place.
  • Run INSTALL.EXE (from Windows or DosBox, shouldn't matter).
  • Tell it which drive and directory to install to.
  • Run TD1.EXE, TD2.EXE or TD3.EXE from that installed directory.

in my zip file i heave only two file.....

Yeah, you downloaded the wrong file. You should have a zip file with 6 files -- INSTALL.EXE, .DAT and .BIN, and TD123.X00, .X01 and .X02.

Try downloading the game again now -- I just re-checked the download and it's the right file.

Weta 12-02-2005 07:59 PM

Hi there,

I'm luckier than most, I can get the game to run flawlessly w/o DosBox or cpukiller under XP, but if you need running help you should also check the HOTU forums on the topic, they've had a variety of problems.

My problem is different. Over the course of the game I've encountered various glitches, some quite severe, but I have randomly worked around most of them (getting a close distance kills stuck units, for example). However, I am truly stuck on Chapter 3, Level 8.

Very minor mission spoilers here, this is a seemingly very easy mission where you have to fight 4/5 enemies and deliver some trucks to a building. Usually in this game you deliver trucks to outside the map, but since they have to reach this building instead of a straight road they simply get stuck in it and the game doesn't recognise that they are in the right place.

Similar to the ships they start oddly vibrating and I can't complete the mission, even if I kill all of the enemy ships. If I destroy the trucks, oddly, I fail the mission but get a cutscene upon my return detailing my failure before being prompted to retry the mission.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm soooo close to the end!

EDIT: I've solved the problem, it turns out I wasn't doing anything wrong, the game is just confusing in its presentation and you must press esc in the cutscene. Now I am stuck with the same problem on mission 10, and the trick doesn't work!

The Fifth Horseman 14-02-2005 02:22 PM

*hint* There is one mission that you cannot succeed no matter how hard you try. *hint*
It's rigged against you and you are SUPPOSED to fail it. One with the chopper, where you escort the truck convoy to the south. Even if you manage to get them all out (I managed to, after several attempts), you fail the mission. But the game lets you continue to the next level, cause it was supposed to happen anyway.

Weta 15-02-2005 03:05 AM

I'm past that mission, I'm still on Chapter 3 Mission 10, and the oddly vibrating truck stands between me and the finale! Still, I'm so glad to find this game after all these years... so many sites advertised having it but only but up the shareware, and now some 10 years since I first watched my jaw drop at this game's intense storyline I can re-live the whole shebang. Thanks again to whoever's responsible for the download.

Tuttle 15-02-2005 08:03 AM

I'd give DOSBox a try first, just in case there's some speed-related glitch.

If you still can't get through it, typing the following in the directory where you have TD2192 installed (from Windows, not DOSBox) will set the top savegame in Episode 3 to be at mission 11. That should let you keep going at least. You need to type this:
Code:

debug td3.sav
e 0100 0b
w
q

So you end up with this on the screen:
Code:

D:\TD>debug td3.sav
-e 0100 0b
-w
Writing 00046 bytes
-q

Weta 15-02-2005 05:09 PM

Thanks, DosBox fixed it and I finally completed the game.

Out of interest, though (# of levels spoiler, I don't know if this is important or not) I am wondering if anyone knows if there's a secret level anywhere in this game? It's just because the first two chapters are 20 levels and the third is 19 by my math.. I might be wrong, but I'm just curious.

The Fifth Horseman 16-02-2005 12:23 PM

All the episodes are 20 levels each. There is no secret level.

Tuttle 17-02-2005 08:34 AM

No, Weta is right -- the last mission in episode 3 is mission 19. If you hack a saved game to be at mission 20 the game won't run anything when you select Next Mission.

The Fifth Horseman 17-02-2005 12:26 PM

  :wall: :wall: :wall:
I played TD2192 last time, when, a year ago I think. So I guess I just remembered it wrong.

Argith Nuei 06-06-2005 03:57 PM

Oh... My god... I thought i would never see this game ever again. I have thought it lost all these years and now abandonia is handing me this... this gift from above. Wow. I totally fell in love with this game the first time I played the shareware version. That must have been back in... 1991 if im not mistaking.
The same year i got my very first pc from my parents... I remember buying every game-magasine i could find, just for the games. Giga mostly.
LOL Those were the days. Bought UFO :Enemy unknown as my first game. Love it still.
 I wonder where i put the old box-o-junk. It was a IBM APTIVA pc, had... around 50 mhz... Could that be right? And only around 2 megabytes of Memory.
No soundcard, no cd drive, no speakers. Had to buy all of that myself.
My parents were actually pretty dumb to buy a pc without even knowing what I would require of it. But there and then I was in ecstacy. *sigh....*
Sorry if im going a bit :ot: here. But I just had to tell my story.
Love you Mom, Dad!

Aramazon 22-06-2005 02:33 AM

Aww I love the storyline, back wen i played it i couldnt speak english LOL
anyway whats a radian represent, a minute?

BeefontheBone 22-06-2005 07:53 AM

Normally a measure of angles - 2 pi radians is equal to 360 degrees, a full turn. Can't remember what it's used for in the game though.

The Fifth Horseman 22-06-2005 09:14 AM

Time units.

Isamoor 03-08-2005 03:41 PM

This took me forever to find! I couldn't even remember the name of the game, just the story. You guys rule for still having it around!

blue123 22-10-2005 12:29 PM

I always get a runtime error. How can I solve this?

Gamefreak 22-10-2005 12:49 PM

Great description " I always get a runtime error"... <_<
If you want help, provide more details to make more sense.

blue123 22-10-2005 12:53 PM

K. Runtime error 200 at 006B: 0091. I use windows XP home.

Eagle of Fire 22-10-2005 02:46 PM

Use Dosbox... Like it's stated in the download page. I don't see an XP icon there, do you?

Music's up on Abandonia: http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=musi...partment%202192
You could always get the images out of screenshots.

Ohhh, a remake? Let me know if you make any progress, I love the game :D

blue123 14-11-2005 02:35 PM

Yeah... I know the music's on abandonia, but those are just remakes... I want the proper thing! (please)

And I don't think I'd be able to get all the buildings and stuff out of screenshots, because I'm crap at graphics...

blue123 19-11-2005 10:27 AM

:ot: Uhh... can anyone rip the images for me? :sniper:

*.CMF files in the dame directory. My Winamp plays them, but poorly. If you want the actual 100% accurate music, use DosBox' sound recording option.
For the images, do the screenshots yourself. Then use GIMP to work on them, it's easy.

blue123 22-11-2005 04:08 PM

All right, thanks. But will photosuite do? EDIT: :D what's the button for screenshot :D sorry 'bout that. I can't find the instructions.

The Fifth Horseman 24-11-2005 01:16 PM

GIMP it totally freeware. You should try it.
In DosBox, the screenshot key is CTRL+F5.

Skif Dank 27-11-2005 07:36 PM

dude.. thank you guys SO much for making this game available!!

it's seriously appreciated!

best of wishes to all

blue123 30-12-2005 10:38 AM

When you move towards a new base in episode 3, some of the missions afterwards became the same-y...

Eva02Soul 30-12-2005 11:31 AM

Actually, I disagree. I think the missions after the new base is found are some of the best, because they're building up the tensions and then BAM, the twist comes.

Necromagus 30-12-2005 12:06 PM

The main problem I have with the third episode is the insanely slow ship you're stuck with. Never made it past those :(

SupSuper 30-12-2005 02:56 PM

I loved Episode 3. The missions were actually hard, compared to the previous episodes where you hardly got blown up. The toughest one for me was the one where you had to escort a truck to a medical facility, the bastard kept getting blown up. If I tried to protect it, my shots hit it and BOOM

Still, I managed to finish the game in the same day I downloaded it. So freakin' addictive, and the story's awesome and keeps you wanting to know what happens next (and the insults are so funny) :D

I'm stuck on that mission at the moment...

PS: What's the twist?

Quote:

That mission requires a little different approach then the rest. Don't go trigger-happy and keep trying - you'll eventually finish it. BTW, it's probably the single hardest mission in the game.

Quote:

PS: What's the twist?
Nope. Find out yourself, otherwise it's no fun.

blue123 02-01-2006 05:00 PM

Darn! I think the main problem is the blockades and the slow ship you've got. Anything would be better. Hornet?

Ps: Remake coming along good, Problems with some images and movement though.

Eva02Soul 03-01-2006 06:05 AM

The ship isn't that bad, remember that your gunfire can destroy ships before they've even entered the screen, so you can keep the road clear for the convoy.

The Fifth Horseman 03-01-2006 12:17 PM

Yup, and that's the key to getting through the level. Use satellite view to see the ships coming at you before you have them on the game screen and destroy them with ranged fire. Not too complex.

SupSuper 03-01-2006 03:49 PM

The only problem with not seeing what you're hitting is you might also hit the convoy. And even with the slow ship, if you drive carefully enough you can get ahead of the convoy in the start. Tricky but helpful :)

The Fifth Horseman 03-01-2006 04:04 PM

The convoy displays a bit differently on the radar, and always follows the same path. It's not too difficult to avoid hitting them.

blue123 28-01-2006 10:20 AM

Is it me or does both episode 1 and 2 have a "defend the hangar" mission?

PS: How do I hack the savegame? I'm a bit confused.

EDIT: Ah, forget it. I figured it out.

Guest_RevDrJFlash 08-04-2006 08:33 PM

Finally beat this game today after years of trying, i first played this on my 486 when i was in 6th grade LOL. I thought the last few missions were kinda lame and the ending was mearely ok but still a great plot. Anyone have any favorite characters? Carl FTW.

The Fifth Horseman 10-04-2006 03:42 PM

There isn't anything wrong with Vel either.

timlaptopm101 20-04-2006 05:58 AM

Anyone ever feel like take a picture of all the plot screens? I just wanna relive the story without all the crappy gameplay!!

The Fifth Horseman 20-04-2006 08:45 AM

The text is hidden in one of the files in game directory. You can find it and read, if you like.

Making screenshots from all of the story screens would take too much time and disk space for someone to do that just for you. If you want to get through the storyline that way... play the game again and take the screenshots yourself.

panopticonisi 19-05-2006 03:39 AM

I'm a new member. I came to this site after i googled simcity 2k, but when I saw this game listed, I HAD to register. Thanks so much for finding this game. I always thought this was one of those obscure games that I'd never hear about again. I got the demo of this game on a demo cd called "Total Chaos" at babbages (before gamestop bought them out). I just downloaded it and whenever I figure out how DOSBox works, I'll finally figure out what happens to Vel. Thanks a million, guys!

tlhIngan 23-12-2008 06:56 AM

Grab.

Fenrir07 21-03-2010 04:07 PM

Thanks for posting this up. I played the Shareware version back when I was in like 5th or 6th grade and really took a liking to the story. Was never able to play the other 2 episodes till I found them here recently while looking for Wing Commander. That escort mission in episode 3 when you fight in the Vulture III skid gave me some trouble. Same with the mission where you have to keep the base from being destroyed by the V3s.
I do wish they would have given the player a choice in what skid to use some of the missions. The last mission and ending felt rather weak as to what I was expecting.:( The story was still outstanding though.

The Fifth Horseman 21-03-2010 05:31 PM

That Vulture III mission was a headache. XD

flameg0d 28-06-2010 04:19 PM

finally

at last I found this game, I loved velasquez at the 1st time I see her, too bad she have to be a prototype cyborg,
actually I was waiting a sequel for this game since 1995 but safari never release any, well TD isn't a big hit either so I'll just have to play it over and over just to met velasquez:unsure:

nobodyatall 04-10-2010 08:44 AM

stuck ships too

I also discovered this (in one of the D-Fend packs) loved it, and nearly finished the day I started . . . until pathing failure messed up Ep3.

I have ships "vibrating" in place like a few others have reported, but in every mission of ep3. thus I can't pass level 5, which requires the truck you're escorting to actually move. moving past enemies sometimes frees them up for a bit, but never more than once, so I can't get them back to the truck, and I don't think they evade anyway . . .

Several people have reported DOSBox fixing the issue - what did you do? I tried cranking the speed way down as well as increasing it, to no avail; the first two work, and this is the D-Fend pre-configured setup . . .

any thoughts? :-/
I really don't want to hack the saves to skip every escort mission if I can avoid it, and in any case, the story's a lot less interesting when the levels are boring

Thanks!

The Fifth Horseman 04-10-2010 09:35 AM

Oh, right, oops!

I've included the save file, but it happens in *every* level, new games or old.

It's the default install from the D-Fend Reloaded DemoPackage3, launched by D-Fend Reloaded 1.0.1
( http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/Download.html )
-> specifically, the included version is the creative commons release, which is available by itself here:
http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/...ment_2192.html

I hash-checked it and all the game files are the same (except the saves of course), although the classicdosgames one lacks the [included] TD.CFG [my settings are soundblaster music and SFX, keyboard control].

All three td2192 games share the [included] D-Fend .prof profile (and the other two work flawlessly).

Thanks!

jrronimo 07-10-2011 03:03 AM

I'm having a different problem with TD2192: The game starts and plays the intro scene, complete with voices. But when it's time for the game or menu or whatever comes after the intro credits, the game just hangs.

I've got an actual DOS computer for the task. P1 233ish, 160 MB RAM. Any ideas/thoughts?

The Fifth Horseman 07-10-2011 11:09 AM

It's definitely not caused by your saves, or the version of the game you've got. Will check D-Fend, that's one of three likely culprits (second being DOSBox, third being your machine).

I'd say you're overspecced. It ran on 100 mHz 486 (and possibly slower systems too), with 16 MB RAM. Take out 128 MB of your RAM and try again.
