Rather than my usual technique of sifting through crap for a nugget of gold, I'd like to be recommended a strategy.
I'm between games, and the boredom is strong. The strategy should have a decent amount going on, provide a decent challenge without resorting to having a stupid interface (I hate when they do that) and be decent. Thanks in advance, y'all :kosta: |
Starcraft?
|
Yes, Starcraft is great, but my favourite is the old Dune 2 (if you like old games you should give a try), well Dune 2000 is a good remake.
Take a look on Westwood games, I like them all. |
They're all done and dusted, unfortunately.
More than once in most cases. >_> Dune 2 was my very first strategy :) Anything you'd heartily recommend on the site? Just got the old romance of the three kingdoms, and i'm in the mood for something a bit faster paced. |
Did you try XCom: Enemy Unknown?
It's not pure strategy, but it's one of the best game I ever played. What about Ascendancy, Colonization, the first Warcraft, or the classic Settlers? |
Ha.
You've got good taste, David ;) Been through every one of those. I'm starting to warm to the idea of playing dune 2 again. Not to say I wouldn't love a new game, of course. Hate shooting down great suggestions... damn my eyes for having to compare everything new to these classics you've mentioned! |
X-Com Apocalypse?
Incubation? Creascent Hawks Revenge? (ok, the controls may be a little odd before you get used to them...) |
mhhh...let me think...I think I've finished my best old titles LOL
What about "Total war" games like Shogun, Rome or Medieval? They're revolutionary but very hard to play. I'm sure you did try Age of Empire series, well the second was really well done, but I didn't like the third too much. A similar game is Age Of Mithology, himo was original and really funny. Well, if you played them all I think you should wait Starcraft 2 like me ^_^ |

Think I'll give that battle-mech game a try. Fingers crossed, eh? |
Make sure to save after each mission... but not on the same save slot :tai:

and, you have played tiberian sun and redalerts, right? |
- Conquest of the New World. Really cool.
- Dwarf Fortress (freeware). Oh forget it, it's ASCII and the interface could be described as hellish. But astoundingly original. - Fields of Glory. Haven't gone through it yet but looks interesting, the fast-paced way. - Hannibal. Well to be honest this has the worst interface ever but otherwise it's very cool. - Imperialism. Soviet-like micromanagement --fun! - Lords of the Realm. Haven't gone through it myself either but it looks very good, from economy micromanagement to battles including castle design, set in Medieval England and Wales. - Machiavelli the Prince, AKA Merchant Prince. Another masterpiece from the best company ever, Microprose. - Panzer General. One of the best modern era wargames. - Star Control (I). Yes it's a strategy game, and sure it's fast-paced. But if I were you I'd take a look through these pages: http://www.abandonia.com/genre.php?genre=s...0&orderby=3 |
Funny you should mention tiberian sun.
I was just thinking about it. I never finished it because I had some kind of all-seeing, indestructible crash that would show up every time I got to Hammerfest. I was just looking for a way to get around it ;) |
I'd also recomend Dominus - not the best choice, but more then desent. It's also on the site.
Apart from that I'd suggest Allied General (it's the best - at least in my opinion - in the General series). We have the Panzer and Fantasy general on the site (worth a shot), but I'd suggest Allied General. |
Wolf :)

Was amusing myself with big sigs, which is, unfortunately against the rules.
Dune 2 again, then. |
If you really feel bored, then maybe hunting vandals on Wikipedia can entertain you for a while?
|
For fairly fast paced games:
The Moon Project, Empire Earth maybe... Jurassic War..perhaps. I personally think that the Moon Project is the best of this list, but Jurassic War is abandonware(HOTU). |
Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War. The campaing is a bit boring, but in Skirmish and Multiplayer this game really shines. Four different races whose playstyles really vary from each other.
Also has an add-on Winter War which adds the Imperial Guard race, or you can just buy the stand-alone game Warhammer 40K: Dark Crusade, which has the Imperial Guard, Necrons and Tau as new races. I recently also bought a somewhat old game Perimeter. More on that later. |

What I meant was: patrolling recent edits on Wikipedia for vandalism and reverting if neccesary.
Occasionally you can find a real jackpot - fellows who vandalise 15-20 pages in a row, and later (after getting blocked) return with new accounts for more of the fun. |
Only real strategy game is rome: total war with mod europa barbarorum. Do not have another strategygames, it is SIN!
|
Now that I've tested Perimeter, I can say that it sure is different from other RTS games out there. In most games, the base is a place where you produce troops to attack your enemy; in Perimeter it's more like a impending cluster of buildings slowly expanding towards the enemy. It's hard to explaing it in here, but it sure is interesting. Definetely worth a try.
