Icewolf 14-12-2006 05:15 PM

Hi!

Since more and more people are complaining about all AB-sites being slow, I'll take heart and be the one to be tared and feathered by the admins for being nosy again. ^_^

Somehow our downstream is lagging. Sometimes sites aren't loaded completly. You have to refresh several times before the site is fully loaded.

There are interceptions in the loading-process, it's not coming in one stream.
Is this a server issue?

Romano 15-12-2006 07:22 AM

It is not so slow now. At least not for me :max:

RedHeadSebbe 15-12-2006 07:30 AM

I find it the same as Icewolf now, some days ago I didn't have the problem. Maybe it has to do with the browsers :P I'm currently using Internet Explorer 7

Icewolf 15-12-2006 07:35 AM

I'm using Internet Explorer 6 at worx0r and FireFox 2.0 at home.

Both had and have the lags.

Romano 15-12-2006 07:36 AM

I have the same problem yesterday. In both: Firefox & Internet Explorer. But it seems to be somewhat faster today.

Tulac 15-12-2006 07:38 AM

It's a bit faster today but still quote slow.

RedHeadSebbe 15-12-2006 07:42 AM

I just got here again, and now it's running fast for me.......

A. J. Raffles 15-12-2006 09:13 AM

It's painfully slow for me. Is this how it's going to remain?

JJXB 15-12-2006 09:56 AM

i was getting more slowdown yesterday than today

kajjj 15-12-2006 02:30 PM

it was slow yesterday and is still slow today, just like icewolf I have to reload each page before it appears properly

Japo 15-12-2006 03:58 PM

Terribly slow here since some days ago, doesn't depend on the browser but could depend on where you are relatively to the server? Anyway the server seems half down for some reason.

Eagle of Fire 15-12-2006 05:14 PM

I have to agree here... Since several weeks, Abandonia forums began to get slower and slower... Right now, it's down to so much of a crawl that when I look at the new posts for the day, I open them in a new windows because I don't want to have to reload the page when I get back to it!

This is beginning to turn into a pretty serious issue for me. I don't want to waste half an hour reading a few topics I will mostly not even post in...

Mighty Midget 15-12-2006 06:15 PM

Same here. Well, sometimes it's just slow as a slug in syrup, other times it's downright dead and I'm losing connection with AB's server altogether. Like the guys above, I have to reload the pages over and over again, and once in a while mot even that works. Until a couple of days ago, I got a "no connection to server" error message box, but I forgot to screenshoot it. It had some more info, but I haven't got the box back since.

Tulac 15-12-2006 06:32 PM

It's so slow that the only way I can communicate is through shoutbox.

Icewolf 15-12-2006 06:33 PM

All right, this is getting some response.

I wonder why no one of th admins is describing the circumstances or something.
I mean - this is getting global.

Mighty Midget 15-12-2006 07:30 PM

I just realized that posting under these conditions in ridiculous because when you hit the reload button, the post will duplicate itself, and editing it is rather tedious too.

Data 15-12-2006 07:36 PM

We are looking into it.
But we are puzzled as you are.
There was nothing changed in the server configuration.

ReamusLQ 15-12-2006 10:19 PM

does have something to do with the passing of Abandonia over to that other company?

So these must be a real interesting games. I believe that server is playing them by himself (or herself) I do not know the sex of the server :bleh:

Japo 17-12-2006 03:00 AM

The server is a guy, if it was a gal it would be called servress, duh.

Abandonia+AR have their own server which isn't used by any other site, right? So it can't be the hosting provider?

Scarface 17-12-2006 03:58 AM

It was slow for me as well this morning, but right now in working fine.
Is it fixed already? or maybe is because there is little traffic at this hour?

Avelardo 17-12-2006 05:39 AM

Yes.

Quintopotere 17-12-2006 08:29 AM

I'm experiencing this problem even with other sites and with every browser (IE, Mozilla, Opera, SeaMonkey...)

That's really annoying :tai:

Kosta 17-12-2006 05:24 PM

Sorry for the late response. Seems that one of the servers (not abandonia) in the hosting provider's network is being under a DDOS attack, and it slowing down the entire network. Since Abandonia is a part of it, it is affected as well. Whoever is doing this attack is very persistent though so its not loosening up. I've emailed the provider several times, they say they are looking into it. We can all just sit and wait for it to be resolved. I'm sorry about it, and trust me, I'm just as annoyed as you are, but unfortunately there is nothing I can do about it....

Mighty Midget 17-12-2006 05:30 PM

Well, thanks for letting us know :) At least we have a better idea of what's going on. Right now I feel like sueing the attackers' guts out, but I guess waiting will have to do :(

Avelardo 17-12-2006 06:58 PM

So basically, someone with too much time on his hands is inconveniencing a site that provides free downloads.

Hmm...

Dave 17-12-2006 08:32 PM

...I hate this situation :wallbash:
I'm loading pages like with a 56K line...

ReamusLQ 18-12-2006 05:10 AM

You're lucky to be getting that fast

Lulu_Jane 18-12-2006 08:45 AM

.....so....slow....can't *gasp* hold on....much lon-....ger

Thanks for letting us know what's going on, I'm off to find my pitchfork to show those attackers a lesson :)

Mighty Midget 18-12-2006 01:24 PM

Does anybody know when the forum will be back in it's intended form and shape? I still get the tree structure in the topics and it makes it troublesome to make out what's going on in them.

Maybe the admins are planning on it for us as a christmas gift.
Admins: "There you go! Full speed again!"
Users: "Yaaay! Uuuh, that was such a big wish!! Thanks!!!"

OK, just kiddn'. ;)

Playbahnosh 25-12-2006 10:35 PM

O-kay, so it's not just my problem. I was reluctant to tell anybody about it, because I thought the problem was in my compy... but as it turned out...no.
I even get 404's instead of the topic I wanted to view, and it took me 4 refreshes to even get here in this topic...

Only one thing remains to say: "meh."

humorguy 26-12-2006 10:12 PM

I am in total agreement with the first message. I had to refresh twice to get this reply message box up! It is taking a minimum of 30 seconds for a page to appear, if it does at all, and downloading is not worth it as I am getting less than 10k downloading on my 1meg broadband!

I have also noticed Home of the Underdogs site playing up too, wonder if they share servers?

Server needs a new clear out because at this rate this site will come to a standstill in a month or so, which will be a shame as this is the best abandonware site!!

I sincerely hope they become losers anyhow and don't get high-paying jobs as computer technicians, at least before they pay for one year of Abandonia's hosting costs. :ranting:

Titan 27-12-2006 10:56 AM

OK... a little update here:
The network is STILL beeing blasted, and the Host have now moved our server-rack to another connection.
Problem 1: The new connection is theire "backup" line.
Problem 2: We'r sharing the line with the entire server hall.
Problem 3: We'll be stuck here until they've managed to get the filters on the main connection right.
Problem 4: We're moving to another server as I'm writing this.
Problem 5: The moveing will take a while as it's going at the same speed you get :/

So... Kosta said it should be up and running within a week.. FINALY... just bare with us..

And btw, No.. we'r NOT sharing the server with HotU, or anyone else for that sake, but rather sharing the connection with a lot of other servers, that we have no controle over.

humorguy 27-12-2006 02:06 PM

Thanks Titan, any info good or bad is better than no news at all. So thanks! Let's hope HOTU is not being attacked too! If it is I suspect a Big publisher who releases modern games that don't sell because they are either bad or we don't have the Uber PC to run it, so they are sabotaging the retro sites that they see slowing growing as we give up on waiting for a great new game, so go back to the greater older games!

Just a thought...!

The Fifth Horseman 27-12-2006 02:15 PM

Really... if any company did that on intent, they'd find themselves sinking in lawsuits faster then you can spell N-O-W.

rsdworker 27-12-2006 05:51 PM

i had same problems - slow and lagging on forums and on site too
i hope not affects me because i already downloaded simtower today

catchaserguns 27-12-2006 07:10 PM

I've checked HOTU today It seems a little slow also. If this is an attack on this site I hope whoever is causing this doesn't put a virus or some sort of spyware to ruin all those machines that visit this site

humorguy 27-12-2006 08:09 PM

Well, we know what's happening on Abandonia, but generally retro is growing by at least 30% a year, hence the special retro section of ebay started this year. This means more visits and more downloads, especially over the holiday season. I am hoping that is part of the reason for HOTU and other retro sites I have visited (not all as slow as Abandonia, but not as fast as normal).

Lulu_Jane 28-12-2006 12:07 AM

Sadly it's all become glacial in my neck of the words for Christmas. Especially now that those damned earth-quakes have knocked out most of the internet in my region...

Oh well, I'll see you all after the pipes get re-connected, until then Merry Christmas, and a most glorious New Year guys! :brain:

Japo 28-12-2006 02:14 AM

I don't think this attack comes from a publishing company, at least it doesn't make sense to me. Think that, given Abandonia's stance towards the companies, if they want it to be withdrawn a download whose copyright they own, they only have to ask and Ab will comply, so there's no need to involve oneself in a crime liable to prosecution as 'Horseman said. And I understand that this denial or service is causing Ab's hosting provider some huge financial loss, so if they get their paws over the culprit some day they'll claim their (financial) due. No it makes no sense.

As for HOTU, I think it's also friendly to the companies. Anyway the gal in charge is from Thailand, so is Lulu (Merry Xmas 'n prosperous New Year BTW :D ) and she said that some earthquakes have knocked down the Internet there. I don't actually know whether HOTU's server is actually in Thailand, but anyway HOTU was always cloggy for me, and a little time ago it went totally down because of server problems.

Plus Kosta said it, the attack harming Ab was NOT directed towards Ab's server, but towards a server which happens to share its connection with Ab's. The same way we don't know anything about that server, the one attacking it won't know about Ab.

Anyway I'm glad there's a solution coming in that will work in a given time whatever the circumstances.

Lulu_Jane 29-12-2006 03:47 PM

I agree Japofran.

HOTU has always been slow as a dying turtle for me too. Ah well, it just means that we'll all appreciate Abandonia just that much more when all this muck gets sorted out.

Besides, those tubes get clogged really easily remember ;)

humorguy 29-12-2006 04:07 PM

I agree that HOTU is a little flaky, but on the day I got 3k downloading on HOTU for the first time in about 6 months, I come to Abandonia to download from here instead and get 6k downloading! That just struck me as strange, that a week ago I could have got 70-100k download from HOTU or Abandonia, a week later they both go down......

Lulu_Jane 29-12-2006 04:13 PM

This may be true, but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar ;)

verek_22 30-12-2006 06:45 PM

I have the same slow-down trouble on AB and ABR. I don't know why, but it puts me off visiting the forum too much, because I dread the slow loading and the constant refreshing. It used to run fine, but recently, its been snail-like. I hope, when this is over, it'll never happen again.

humorguy 30-12-2006 07:09 PM

It might just be that PC gaming especially and video gaming in general has just collapsed, with everybody getting the Wii, everybody deciding they are not going to get a PS3, the X-Box 360 only a maybe and so retro has totally taken off and other than this site, where we know why it's slow, it could explain why most of the other abandonware sites are also slow!

Maybe a quiet revolution is taking place as we leave messages on this thread! :)

Happy 2007 everyone! :)

Abi79 30-12-2006 07:36 PM

You guys are scaring me. It is just a normal Denial of Service attack made by a normal, but persistent hacker, and who's target is another site, but Abandonia is also affected indirectly. See? It's all n.o.r.m.a.l. :bleh:

(and my speed is also normal; I don't have the slightest idea of what you guys are talking about)

Eagle of Fire 30-12-2006 10:56 PM

Good thing for you, because it takes me 5 minutes only to be able to see what you said. So it's around 6-7 minutes for a reply in a single thread...

At this speed, I won't be visiting Abandonia often in the week. It's rather a big contrast when you're used to visit the forum at least half a dozain time a day...

ReamusLQ 31-12-2006 07:55 AM

I'd just like to apologize for the sort of lull in updates the past week or so. The slow server has really put a hamper on being able to update the site in a timely manner. What used to take a maximum of ten minutes or so now takes a half hour or longer. Hopefully this will all be over soon though and we can treat you all to a nice plethora of entertainment. :ok:

thebes 31-12-2006 06:49 PM

I thought it was just my computer going nuts! My yahoo mail is freaking out now and then too along with other sites I visit. I have not been on the forum for a while not because of speed but because I have been working my Ying Yang off! The old geezer is still here, fear not!
Oh by the way I have a suggestion if it is possible. How about a spell checker? Not super important but it would be nice. ^_^

TheChosen 31-12-2006 07:43 PM

This really show's how important the forum is.

BTW: Has Abandonia installed any kind of security systems lately?

Lulu_Jane 01-01-2007 05:19 AM

It seems to be getting much faster today - it must be a special treat for 2007! :brain:

Japo 01-01-2007 06:37 AM

I wouldn't be too excited about it Lulu, the speed has always depended on the time of the day during the whole attack. It seems to go faster early in the morning (GMT) because there are fewer people online. (Hush, don't tell anyone, it's a secret. ;) )

Don't worry about the updates too much, Realmus and rest of the crew, as you said this is temporary and there's little use in offering downloads that won't work until this is fixed.

humorguy 01-01-2007 10:30 AM

Don't want to put the mockers on it, but here in London it's 11.30am and the thread loaded normally! (ie almost immediately!) Maybe on New Years Day, 11.30am is still early! (I have been up half an hour! LOL!)

Anyway, let's hope it's a wonderful New Year's present from Abandonia!

H A P P Y N E W Y E A R E V E R Y O N E ! ! !

Joscelin 03-01-2007 01:22 PM

The website's terribly slow on my computer.

I can't download Betrayal at Krondor since yesterday.

humorguy 03-01-2007 01:25 PM

It's taking longer to fix than I thought, and the lack of information from Anandonia is disturbing....!

Mighty Midget 03-01-2007 06:57 PM

I guess no new information just means the problem remains the same and unsolved. There is nothing AB can do about this, but they seem to be working on getting AB to a new server if I'm not mistaking.

Anyway: AB seems a bit faster now, no reloading of pages has to be a good thing :)

Titan 03-01-2007 11:27 PM

Yepp.. we got a bit more bandwith now. Maonly to hurry up the move.
It's taking a bit longer then expected due to the transfere... remember it's quite alot of GB's that needs to be moved and double-checked.
Doing it @ 4 KB/s is not fun.

rsdworker 03-01-2007 11:28 PM

i noticed now the pages load quicker now
big thanks to admin (titan)

humorguy 04-01-2007 12:24 AM

yes forum pages load without reloading now...Not so the game pages though.... for me anyway! :)

Reup 04-01-2007 07:19 AM

Kosta is coding his behind off to get things wokring smoothly again. Since the new situation is a lot more complex then the old one, it might take a little while, but things will improve soon enough! And, the forum is allready faster :ok:

TheChosen 04-01-2007 07:39 AM

Icewolf 04-01-2007 08:21 AM

Mighty Midget 10-01-2007 07:16 PM

Did Ab take a dive for the worse today? I've been constantly reloading the pages and I got timed out again. It was 'ok' up until yesterday, but now it's just just driving me nuts.

humorguy 10-01-2007 08:38 PM

Took 65 seconds to load this page. I am always hoping that it's a message from Abandonia saying 'it will be fixed tomorrow' or something, but we never seem to hear anything from them - which is a shame! Please Abandonia, tell us what is going on - please!

Mighty Midget 10-01-2007 10:25 PM

What's going on is that the server AB is on, is being under a DDOS attack, if I'm not mistaking. Kosta is currently working on a solution, and hopefully we'll be back on our feet... soon.

Same here. But with a difference.

Either the site stops loading and won't load forever or
the site is fully loaded in a very acceptable speed.

That's what I'm experiencing from here.

Most likely it's the moving of files to the new server which is eating the minimal existing bandwidth. Whenever the transfer is momentarily interrupted for any reason we get more bandwidth, but when the necessary moving starts again the site loses that barely enough but badly needed bandwidth. I'm guessing, I don't know better than any of you. :) Let's just wait patiently.

To me it's still that way, but the loading speed got better. Then again I have to reload more often. :(

Any news? How far have we proceeded ?

humorguy 19-01-2007 11:27 AM

This is just like the airports. It's not so much the problem not being solved as much as it is the lack of information from those in the know!

If we had been regularly updated on the situation I am sure we wouldn't feel so frustrated.

Certainly I only come to Abandonia now to check if it's still slow or when I get a message notification like this. I have found a couple other abandonware sites I didn't know existed and am going there instead. If this problem hadn't have gone on so long, I would not have bothered to look for them and would not be going to them instead now. I could just about live with the 60 second page load if I was getting reasonable download speeds. But even a 5mb download at 5k is a 30 minute download! Once the download stopped altogether and I had to start it again!

Hope the problem gets solved soon, but in the meanwhile, could you take a couple mins to update us on what's happening?

Romano 19-01-2007 04:32 PM

Well. We will try to think logically.
If actual server allow speed for download a program at less than 10kbs a second, it also enable the same speed for moving files to another server.
You know how Abandonia is big, not in kB, or mB, or gB, but in tB !!!
Now you could make an approximation :whistling:

TBs?! But this are old games. You have over 1032 GBs of games on the site? Wow. :kosta:

Unknown Hero 19-01-2007 10:40 PM

just click the adds twice each day you visit abandonia, and your problems will be solved :bleh:

ah, good ol' abandonia smileys :ranting: :titan: :brain: :tom: :kosta:

Dave 20-01-2007 11:44 AM

Today is terrible...It's difficult to load pages

Icewolf 25-01-2007 08:21 AM

Today and yesterday Abandonia was racing-gracing to me here. Things seem to clear up! :ok:

humorguy 25-01-2007 09:23 AM

Icewolf, it seems to change enormously depending on the time of day, and which day you come to the site. This page loaded in 6 seconds about this time yesterday, today it was nearer 30 seconds! Even the latter amount of time is better than it was a few days ago, so it's getting there slowly, but it is not back to what it was before Xmas, for example.

Dave 25-01-2007 12:39 PM

Very good for me today! I hope AB will hold this result

humorguy 25-01-2007 12:49 PM

David86, the key will be tonight (UK time), between 7pm and 9pm. That's when it really slows down whereas before Xmas it wouldn't. Seems like it still can't handle a regular 'evening' rush hour like it used to !

Japo 25-01-2007 07:41 PM

I'm starting to think this is officially over, it goes smoothly enough now, and it's not episodic because it's been going swell for the last times I've connected at different day times.

Come on, there wasn't lack of information. The staff said what was going on, all we coud do is waiting. What do you want, the admins posting every five minutes saying, "it will be solved in five minutes less than five minutes ago"?

Frodo 25-01-2007 08:17 PM

It's still very bad here. Pages loading very slowly or not loading at all. :wallbash:

Japo 25-01-2007 08:57 PM

Really? It's a nearly a charm over here... Well at least compared to the laggggghh before, not smooth as silk but like a normal site with limited bandwidth. I've tried a download for a while, got around 15 Kbytes/s and it seemed to be getting higher slowly. My connection's top is over 100 and that's what I got here back before this attack but if 15 is the bandwidth I'm getting now, I guess it's enough for browsing. No idea about why I'm getting more than most others. Well I've cancelled the download (already got it actually) and I won't download, I'll save bandwidth for everybody.

Lulu_Jane 26-01-2007 05:57 AM

The forum is loading fine and dandy in my neck of the woods - even (dare I say it) faster than usual.

Downloading games, however, is another story, it's painfully slow and keeps timing out (despite broadband) but that's ok - I'll just wait a few days then try again I s'pose.

Until then, I shall go a click some ads :)

humorguy 26-01-2007 11:23 AM

Two days ago this page loaded in 6 seconds, yesterday it was 31 seconds. Today it's 27 seconds. Also, you can load a review page in 10 seconds, then go to the forum where the page takes 45 seconds or a reload to get to the bottom of the first page. You can then go to the homepage in 'normal time' then click on one of the games listed on the home page and never get to the review page because of timeouts, etc This can all happen in the space of 10 minutes.

Japo 27-01-2007 05:45 AM

Over 40 kbytes/s over here and the forum loads like a bullet. It depends on the location or something, but this is definitely being solved already. :) After demanding information from the admins, I guess it's time to start sympathizing with them because all the hard and altruistic work they've had to perform to sort this out. So congrats and THANKS to all the admins.

PS I hope it doesn't go back. I mean all the way --some additional maintenance bandwidth usage would be understandable.

humorguy 27-01-2007 12:37 PM

I agree that it is better, but something is going on when you get the whole of this page except the last message (yours Japofran) loading in 20 seconds and then it takes 15 seconds for the last message/end of page to appear!

Japo 27-01-2007 02:57 PM

Random reasons. And I guess that there being limited bandwidth, once you click and your request is accepted by Ab's server, you get just so much data until your browser has to request again and wait for acceptance.

Caged 01-02-2007 12:57 PM

I find it rather shocking that a DDos attack has gone on for this long without the situation being resolved....Abandonia is still running slow as mud. HOpe things get better soon, its taking me forever to download transport Tycoon deluxe :D

humorguy 01-02-2007 02:47 PM

Well, today 85 seconds and 90% page loaded but not completing. So gave up and reloaded page. this time whole page loaded in 20 seconds. So something is still happening, don't know what it is that makes the last 10% of a forum page take so long! :(

RedHeadSebbe 02-02-2007 06:26 PM

It's fast for me!! WOoooo!!!

humorguy 02-02-2007 07:54 PM

54 seconds load just now to see this page.....! Ughhhh!

Dave 03-02-2007 12:17 AM

In the last three days it was ok for me! ^_^

Eagle of Fire 03-02-2007 01:19 AM

Speed issues been greatly reduced on my side also since about two-three days.

Lulu_Jane 03-02-2007 05:13 AM

I guess that your tubes are still clogged :)

It's all good in my neck of the woods though...

humorguy 23-02-2007 08:16 PM

With the greatest respect, I don't understand why Abandonia is adding new titles when you cannot download at more than about 20k on a 1mb broadband line! It seems solving the speed issue would be more important than adding titles! Please don't bother adding anything of 5mb in size until you fix the speed problems, as any more than 5mb and I won't bother at th DL speeds I am getting! :(

Scatty 23-02-2007 10:17 PM

Slowly Abandonia begins to remind me on HOTU :whistling:

chainsoar 23-02-2007 11:11 PM

You take that back. Foul blasphemy. Seriously though, AB does still seem a bit slow.

Titan 25-02-2007 03:26 AM

We've given up on the current ISP it seems and is trying to move the site.. but it's taking a while at the current speed, and with setting up the new servers..

Only Kosta knows when it's done..

btw, right NOW i'm having real-time loading almost and the pages pops up as i hit the links, so it's more a normal "load-issue" as we'r still sharing the "backup"-connection with lower bandwith, with alot more servers then we used to.
Sad, but that's the latest.

oh.. and NO.. weär NOT going to abandon the site in any way.. but the other way aroubd.. you'll see soon ;)

catchaserguns 25-02-2007 09:20 AM

I have found that the downloads have been freezing up on me. They freeze in mid- download.

humorguy 25-02-2007 10:32 AM

Would it help to switch of all the flashy animated icons in threads.....?! :)

What flashy icons?

The Fifth Horseman 26-02-2007 02:18 PM

He probably means emoticons.

Taskmaster 28-02-2007 09:43 PM

Exactly! I can't get past 8% on Fatty Bear and my kids are waiting!! :)

catchaserguns 01-03-2007 04:04 AM

Unfortunately Abandonia has slowed down so bad it is next to impossible to download from them. I've used IE7 and the downloads stopped in mid-download and I've used firefix and they stopped in mid-download. I hope and pray that Kosta can fix this. A couple a weeks ago A friend used my computer and ending up crashing it and I lost all my games. I've always used Abandonia to get my retro-games and would like to keep on using them. they are a very good site. But it is hard to support a site that can't offer the things you use to get on it before. I was going to donate but when a site is not running well I have to my money on the winners. Please Fix this site for all of us. Then i might slip something in your stocking this Christmas.

Don't do that... ;)

Yes, I have to say as well that the site is slowing down.
Especially sites stop loading.

But Titan posted something in another thread (but I'm currently too lazy to dig it out) about that Abandonia is moving again. Maybe that's the reason.

Abi79 01-03-2007 01:49 PM

So: Abandonia is moving to another server, so that is the cause for the slowdowns. Period. If you want to download something, use a download manager. That way you will be able to download. I assure you.

Japo 01-03-2007 03:12 PM

Yes the site is slower now again but that means that it's being moved harder to the new server. Rest assured that the site won't be ever left to languish, let alone now with the Studentis thingy and whatnot.

Tulac 01-03-2007 03:58 PM

The site is slow? Oh I got used to it. :D
