This is the one folks!
This is the game that started the LucasArts adveture games!
The first scumm point and clikc adventure!!!

Well, this is a VGA remaks, but still...

Does this mean that Zak McCracken and the Alien Mindbenders are up next?
The game is abandonware (not a remake yet), but that's really a game I've been trying to push through. Uploaded it and even wrote my own review for it (really - my very own), just waitong for someone to put update it into the main site...

Yamcha 16-11-2004 08:35 PM

Just the games where everytime i must pick up close open use walk etc. are not my style

Mickey Bitsko 16-11-2004 08:48 PM

This is a GOOD one! I think it's better than the original. My nephew and me played this for a week this summer. Lots of fun.

And Loom too. Golly jeepers. Man you've been working overtime. Have a beer on me!

auhsor 17-11-2004 01:05 AM

Yay, another AGS game. Although I didn't play through this remake heaps, I have heard that it is pretty true to the original. And the original is one of my favoutite games EVER. That might be because it is one of the first game I ever played on our C64.

Also check out LucasFan's sequal for Zak. I'm not sure it's as good, as I didn't play the whole thing.

Oh well, sorry to say but it doesn't do justice to the fiurst part!
The first part took you through many real life riddles (and some popular - to make fun of - stories). It explained the pyramids on Mars, the hidden meaning of the sphings, the deiapearence of Elvis... and even gave you an inside to the mentality of a yak
But the sequal is just, well, just...
It's a fun little game, but all the puzzles are sooooooo simple and there's not much of a plot really. Couldn't measure up to any real adventure game - sorry.
Still liked it, but then again I'm a fan of Zak!!!

Yeah thats what I was thinking. I heard some stuff that it wasn't that great. I never really played the first game much. I did finish it tho, but with the help of a walkthrough. I guess I'm more of a MM guy, and this remake is awesome.

IoP 07-12-2004 11:28 PM

Remove that dosbox compatibility icon! This game isn't runnable with dosbox. It works with wine but settings are hard to set.

"This program cannot be run in DOS mode." => damn you

Iron_Scarecrow 08-12-2004 09:51 AM

Is there a way to get out of the Dungeon?

I had all my three people in there and I don't know how to get them out.

Tuttle 08-12-2004 10:10 AM

There's a brick on the wall that's not quite like all the others...

Iron_Scarecrow 08-12-2004 10:18 AM

Hmmmmm. I'll look into that. :ok:

Thanks. :ok:

SOSOrElse 24-12-2004 07:39 PM

Lots of questions.

1) How do I get the electric wires? I've shut the power off, so now what?
2) How do I get Edna out of her room?
3) What's the card key go to?
4) What's the purpose of the sponge?
5) Purpose of the radioactive water?
6) How do I get the casette tape?
7) Purpose of the package?
8) Purpose of the dimes?
9) Purpose of the stamp?

Lots more, but that'll do.

Sebatianos 24-12-2004 07:46 PM

Well this game has different ways of playing!
The things you find do not all have a purpose!
It depends which kids you chose at the begining!
If you have Bernard then after the lights are off he can take a flashlight and go up to the atic to fix the wires...
The coins will go into the telescope (so you can read the numbers of the safe), the radioactive water makes a plant grow, so you can climb up it!
The sponge can collect the developing fluid (to make pictures, not all kids can do that).
The casette tape is in the library (try the borads to the far right - past the stairs).
To make Edna leave you need to get her to the phone (if I remember correctly)...
But those are the things you should figure out your self - that's the point of an adventure!
Only if you're really stuck at one point and can't go on should you ask for help! Otherwise it's not that fun!

The_X 28-12-2004 07:42 AM

Hey I have a question, how do you break people out of the dungeon?

Tuttle 28-12-2004 09:01 AM

At the start of the game, you need two people in the dungeon to stage a breakout, and you'll always need to leave someone behind. There's a brick on the wall which you'll need to find by mousing over it.

Later on, you can get a key to open the door from the outside.

LeD 18-01-2005 12:15 AM

:ok: This is great. Its just almost like the original one. This is one of the first NES games i played that i really enjoyed way back in the day. Heres a tip I still remebered to do after all the years; Its quite simple not to get any of your guys in the dungeon in the beginning, all you have to do is spin the first person you take in the house around and run outta the kitchen door, when Nurse Edna is chasing you, she will not run out after you, and then she is gone out of the kitchen...

Tulac 18-01-2005 06:34 PM

Day of the tentacle is an sequel to this game isn't it?

Tuttle 18-01-2005 07:38 PM

Yep. Same scientist, same tentacles, same Bernard.

Actionmong 18-01-2005 10:48 PM

Okay what happened to being able to put the hamster in the microwave?
I know that nintendo had them remove it for the NES port but since this was a remake they could have left it in. It's not that im a sicko, it's just that i thought it was a great way to kill of dave, and lets face it, he is quite useless and dosent deserve to be there when his girlfriend gets freed, he even refuses to speak to her when he makes it into the lab. plus this gives bernard a chance to be her hero, it's about time some one gave the guy a break

Still though this is a fantastic remake of one of my fravourite games

DeathDude 19-01-2005 01:08 AM

Actually in the nes version you could still put the hamster in the microwave, but only with Syd and Razor you could do it with.

phuture 25-01-2005 10:22 PM

hmm.. im in the painting room and on this remake it dont work to put the paint remover on the pink painting! Neither does it work to climb up the tentacle plant when u give him radioactive water... is this a glitch or what ?

Thanks for a great remake

phuture 25-01-2005 11:13 PM

ok, i found out about the paint removal thingie but i still cant climb the man eating plant.. whats wrong ? what shall i do.

phuture 25-01-2005 11:14 PM

ok, i found out about the plant too.. no worries haha

auhsor 26-01-2005 02:31 AM

Hehe yeah, he did change a few things when he remade the game...

Guest 12-02-2005 09:25 AM

Okay...in the walkthrough it says that I need to use the quarter in the Meteor Mess game and that I can only do it after I see Dr Fred playing it...but when they show Fred in the game room he can't play the game cause he says "I guess the power's out"...what do I do now? Please help!

Thanks!

Daniel 15-02-2005 07:14 PM

How do i get the key thats in the lamp?

Tortoise262 22-02-2005 06:23 AM

You can also sneak through Edna's room another way... It's not as sly, but it does the job. You can send someone in there to get caught, and then sneak another person through before she comes back from the dungeon.

Tortoise262 22-02-2005 06:28 AM

Okay, to get Dr. Fred to play the game, first Bernard has to fix the wires behind the paint room. And the key on the lamp? I'm assuming you mean the chandelier in the living room... You have to go to the room with the piano, play the record on the victrolla (the high-pitched sound) and record it on the tape you find in the library. Then play the tape in the living room... And viola! You've broken all the windows!

Chuck the plant 09-03-2005 06:09 PM

A "technical" question... the setup gives option to enable a "speech pack"... is this already available? If so: Where do I get it?

DonCorleone 09-03-2005 06:14 PM

Naah, I donīt think so. There are some voice scenes in the german version. But they are just adapted from dott. Iīm not really sure but I donīt think that there are any voice files for the whole game yet.

brush and paint remover on the paint splotch on the wall will get you further

use the radioactive water to make the plant grow..give the plant some pepsi to make him burp so he can't bite ya.

DeathDude 09-03-2005 07:30 PM

If my memory serves me correctly with the paint can you have to open it first then use the paint brush on the paint can then on the splooch, they changed this from the original I know.

Seems I've wasted your bandwidth downloading it.

Chuck the plant 30-03-2005 01:00 AM

No, you just don't need Dosbox (as the game description say anyway, IIRC), cause it's a windows-game LOL ;)

What gave you the idea that I have (or ever had, or ever will) Windows?
My point was that the dosbox compatibility icon should be removed.

auhsor 30-03-2005 03:31 AM

Hmm I can see how he was confused if the icon is there. Games should be checked first before they get that icon.

nightwish 12-04-2005 04:19 AM

I found a walkthrough somewhere that tells you the many ways to kill Dave, eg. hamster in microwave, swimming pool... I accidentally discovered another one on my own, which is playing the cassette tape (found in the library) on the green tentacle's stereo. I don't think I recorded anything on it, but it still made screechy sounds. Anyway, I was just testing the tape, and Green Tentacle screams: "The Tentacle Mating Signal!"

Well, it made me laugh...

Deadguy 25-05-2005 08:04 PM

Just warning ya

whew boy..I am sure you beat it by now but if you haven't let me see if I can assist.

How do I get the electric wires? I've shut the power off, so now what?

With the power off you need the tool kit (garage) and you need the flashlight and some batterys, turn on the flashlight and fix the wires with tools and please please turn on the power when your done.

How do I get Edna out of her room?
Walk in there and she will follow you, but you don't get her out of the room, you only can distract her. Shes a lonely lady (to say the least) and loves phone calls even from strangers.

What's the card key go to?
You'll find the slot towards end game-be sure to be dressed for the occasion

What's the purpose of the sponge?
When you have Mike you will need it to get the developer, but you got to follow the pipes.

Purpose of the radioactive water?
It makes Plants grow, and I wouldn't try it at home.

How do I get the casette tape?
Its in the library, look at the panels

Purpose of the package?
To make Friends with Wierd Ed..if thats your thing. He is useful in the endgame.

Purpose of the dimes?
You will know what to do after you water the plant a bit with the radioactive water.

Purpose of the stamp?
Remember the message when you turned on the TV..some of the characters can send things to the publishers, mix and match

blastradius14 25-06-2005 04:40 PM

It took me a long time to figure all that out, you pratically gave the whole game play away!

This is a game where you have to use your brain. At least, a little bit.

Unlike the Snes game smashtv

blastradius14 26-06-2005 04:39 AM

Then they had to go and not let you use the chainsaw. Why? mindless slaughter with tools of mutilation undoubtedly have occured in that house..

Frodo 30-06-2005 09:34 AM

I don't think you can pick up the radioactive fluid.
I think it is just there are 'background scenery' so to speak. :)

maybe I should consider putting together a FAQ :D

Guest 01-07-2005 05:08 AM

Spoilers Spoilers Spoilers Spoilers

ye been warned

1. You need to drain the pool first..try the main water valve
Under the front porch
2. To fix the arcade games, which is important for getting into the lab

3. to show you which direction the telescope is moving and to make scenary

4. you need a key and a combination for the lock

5. That's Edna's phone number..very useful

I got to take off now and cook dinner- so good luck to you mate

Frodo 01-07-2005 08:28 AM

@ Guest

Want to see a funny scene?

Save your game before doing this.

When playing with Razor, get her to make a demo tape, then send that tape to 222 SkyScraper way. When you get the record contract, show it to Tentacle.

LOL

Doc Adrian 01-07-2005 10:52 AM

LOL I like "accidently" blowing up the mansion sometimes, nothing like a mushroom cloud to kill ones tension

Frodo 01-07-2005 11:31 AM

***DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS***

Try putting the hamster into the microwave. LOL

There's nothing quite like cooked hamster when you are feeling peckish. :bleh:

Doc Adrian 01-07-2005 11:48 AM

and if you do put the hamster in the microwave...please don't give it back to his owner without saving the game. Some people can be so sensitive :bleh:

Frodo 01-07-2005 12:02 PM

I must confess. I hadn't thought of giving the hamster back to Ed - cooked or other wise.

I'll need to give that one a try. :D

EDIT - Drain the pool and make some one go down there (as if they were getting the radio). Leave them in there, then refill the pool. LOL

Doc Adrian 01-07-2005 12:10 PM

LOL Glub Glub Glub..you will have to let me know how Ed handles the Cooked Hamster, I haven't tried it on this version of Maniac Mansion LOL

Frodo 01-07-2005 10:26 PM

It's funny when Bernard sees the Tentacle for the first time.

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH (runs away)

LOL LOL LOL

blastradius14 27-07-2005 03:56 PM

Or just leave the pool empty. Even funnier when EVERYBODY dies.

This is one of my favorite old games, I'm psyched that there's a remake. I just hope it works on my computer, half the games here don't. I remember playing this on the C64, it's what got me addicted to adventure games. I hope this works, I can't wait to play the 'new & improved' version!!!

For the love of God someone help me... I can not get the radioactive water! Believe me, I have tried...

I emptied the pool, went down with Dave with an empty jar and clicked on the radioactive slime with the empty jar, and Dave says "I don't think so."

Then, I went down AGAIN with a jar full of water and tried to click on the radioactive slime again, and Dave still says "I don't think so."

I have come so far and done alot of this crap but I can not get this plant to grow! It just sits and burps...

Someone help!

RadioH20 02-03-2006 06:33 PM

Also, if no one can help me out, what is the combination for the safe for MM Deluxe? That is all I really need.

And it isn't any of the combinations from the old Monster Mansions, like 1230 or 1029 (hehe I have already tried). I think it is a new code for this version.

RadioH2O 02-03-2006 07:08 PM

Spoke too soon... I figured it out.

For future reference to anyone else who rarely has this problem it seems, dunk the empty jar in the pool.

And the code on my version is...

I played MM on the C64 as well. And you should know that ALL Lucasfilm adventures go to save/load menu by hitting F5 :sneaky:

Since you never got the radioactive water, you couldn't ever solve the game is that right?

RadioH2O 08-03-2006 03:37 AM

I finally got it taken care of and beat the game, thanks!

Also, it is cool to go back to your old saved games and beat the games in different ways!

As I lift up my glass of radioactrie water, here's to Maniac Mansion!

Icewolf 08-03-2006 09:54 AM

Don't forget to drink a can of Pepsi afterwards! :D

Thezuule 14-03-2006 11:05 PM

Having a really weird problem with Maniac Mansion Deluxe on the PC. Whenever I use the telescope i cannot ever see a combination for the safe. If i go once left I see mars and the little space monster. First position is the tree. Once to the right and I see the corner of the house (upper corner, rain gutter) and twice to the right reveals what looks like a drawn window with a spider hanging off the bottom. NO where is there a code to unlock the safe. I have tried every possible combination of moving the telescope around... WTH am I doing wrong or what did I forget to do?

Doc Adrian 14-03-2006 11:12 PM

First you must open the picture in the attic to reveal the safe....then the combo will be seen where you saw the picture and spider earlier

Guest_mercenary 03-04-2006 11:17 AM

as a tentacle fan, i was really excited about playing this game...however, whenever i start the game, the mouse cursor doesn't move...it's in windows mode, 600x400- i set it up to open in another screen. HELP!!!!!!!!

blastradius14 04-04-2006 03:59 AM

Unless you are using a standard port mouse (ps2, or Serial) then it won't work unless you play it in Dos-Box.

Snake 12-04-2006 04:32 PM

Hey! i have an USB optical mouse with ps2 adaptor and the cursos doesn't moves
however i have changed de mouse and put a serial mouse and the problem continues

Yeah, i've already tryed in DosBox but appears the missage:

"This program cannot be run in DOS mode"

Frodo 13-04-2006 06:00 PM

Try SCUMM - http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php

That should work. :ok:

snake 17-04-2006 01:52 PM

in scumm doesn't works because the program doesn't read the format file. :(
scumm reads the extension .1c (for example in the game "Flight of the Amazon Queen"), but in Maniac Mansion there is no any file with the extension .1c

i wan't to play Maniac Mansion Deluxe

Beowulf 19-05-2006 09:50 AM

Since when could you not download Maniac Mansion deluxe????
I downloaded this game 6 month ago, i dont have it anymore, but why was it allowed back then, and not now????

#BlakhOle# 19-05-2006 10:06 AM

werent some games available until the ESA wanted them back?

The Fifth Horseman 19-05-2006 11:44 AM

It's at least odd, since MMDX is a fan remake. However, what happened back then was pretty hectic and the admin crew had been removing anything that might have had the slightest chance of being the reason of ESA strike.

I'll contact Kosta.

punjab9800 22-05-2006 06:59 AM

a shame that you cant download this redux-version anymore. It is weird, i thought they had the premission from lucas-games....

The Fifth Horseman 24-05-2006 02:13 PM

Kosta informed me that Lucas Arts demanded removal of this game because they consider it to be a serious case of IP infrigement.

Unfortunately, they are right, since every fan-game and fan-remake can be accused of that.

anonymous 24-05-2006 02:40 PM

fifth-horseman: does that mean i have to erase the copy i have of the game, from when i thought it was legal??? Does this mean that i have to erase the file, all traises of it, smash my computer, then burn it, and then turn my self in??

Yes, that's exactly what will happen!
Though you erased all the traces of that game from your pc you are guilty and thus doomed. Best thing you can do is close your prison cell door from the inside and hide under the bed because you're such a bad bad bad boy!
:roflol:

The Fifth Horseman 26-05-2006 02:20 PM

Of course not. Why the heck would you do that for, anyway?
All it means is that Lucas Arts can forbid any site(s) from distributing it.

MonkeyforaHead 06-08-2006 08:53 PM

Uhhh, what? Freeware remake belonging to a now-deceased group, but it's listed as ESA protected?

Guest 06-08-2006 09:00 PM

Okay never mind me, I somehow missed the last page and a half. Darn LucasArts and their trigger-happy lawyers.

The Fifth Horseman 07-08-2006 02:08 PM

Copyrights are copyrights. They paid for them, they own them.

RazorX 08-09-2006 02:02 PM

There are other places to download the game, which I would suggest doing and preserving yourself a copy.

nonnoparmiro 12-09-2006 11:23 PM

Hi folks.. a simple question:
when i use the telescope and push twice the right button, the right combination is supposed to be revealed. Instead here i can only see a big spider hung on the roof. Is it actually hiding anything important??

Cheers

by the way.. MASSIVE game..

You need to find a way into the attic. You can get there via Nurse Edna's room, but make sure you have 2 people up there ready. When you get into the attic, there is a painting on the wall. Open the painting to see a safe, and a tiny code underneath. Go back to the telescope to read the code, and then return to the safe to open it.[/b]

i bought Day of the Tentacle, first on Discette, then on CD.
in the Day of the Tentacle-mansion you could play the original game: maniac mansion on cousin fred (whatever his name is (the guy with the hamsters)) computer.
The original maniac mansion is a part of Day of the Tentacle, so if i own a copy of Day of the Tentacle, dont i also have the right to play this game????

if youre using the deluxe version, the sound problem is most propably a windows problem, as the deluxe version IS a windows program, which can NOT be run under any dos- or dos-related OS.

so, concernin g your sound-problem, check your windows sound, (your speakers, too), or, if you DO have sound in windows and just not in the game, you may want to re-install the game.

No, there's a numeric keypad hidden in the wallpaper...I think it's the third floor...in the hallway
where the doors to the doctors office and video game room are.....if you roll the mouse over the wallpaper near the floor in the far corner to the left of the steel door....there's a hidden keypad you can type a 4 digit number into...but when you type in any old random number the house explodes in 60 seconds!!
I can't figure out what the hell its for or where to get the code...
anybody know??

Frodo 10-05-2007 08:36 PM

YES! Most defintly...after you access it and type something in, the meltdown alarm sounds and then you hav e few seconds and then everybody dies. Move the mouse along the blue wallpaper near the baseboard in the corner of the hallway.

Paco 21-06-2007 08:02 PM

there is something that i dont understand.

Sure Maniac Mansion belongs to Lucasfilm and is protected by ESA, BUT Maniac Mansion Deluxe is Fanmade and therefore a Remake.

So:

1. Why is it ESA-Protected?????? (Games that is made from Fans and is protected from ESA. The World is doomed. :w00t: )
2. It should go to Reloaded not Abandonia.

Thank you for your Time. ^^

The Fifth Horseman 22-06-2007 01:59 PM

1. LucasArts owns not only the copyright to the original MM itself, but also to all characters and events therein. Since MM Deluxe is effectively a fan-made remake, LucasArts had the right to demand its removal (or otherwise start filing copyright infrigement lawsuits).
2. It was put here before Reloaded even existed. I think Reloaded has an entry for it too.

Paco 23-06-2007 07:42 PM

Maniac Mansion is from 1987 and is more then 15 years old and is hence no more protected or? If Maniac Mansion is no more protected so is Maniac Mansion Deluxe too since it is based on the Original and Why is there no Review of the Original? <_<

Does that mean if you wanted to make a legal fan-remake, you would have to do something like this?
Original:
Syd, musician, yellow tie
Fan-game:
Ryd, guitar-player, red tie <_<

And it wouldn't be the Edisons but the Hedisons and such crap?

I don't get this "fan remake" thing... I had MM on my old Atari, and it looked EXACTLY THE SAME as these screenshots. Same character design and everything. So This "fan remake" is probably some kind of translation of the Atari version. Or something...

The Atari version is indeed pretty similar to MMDx, but not the same. There is a second version of original MM for DOS that uses EGA graphics and is nearly the same as the one for Atari.
From top to bottom: Maniac Mansion for DOS, Maniac Mansion for Atari, Maniac Mansion Deluxe.

Fun old game, plenty of nostalgia. A word of advice: don't use a walkthrough, just be patient. If that doesn't sound like fun, this low-graphics old game probably isn't for you.

The game uses the Adventure Game Studio engine. Even then, this game would be more under Abandonia Reloaded than this portion of the site.

The Fifth Horseman 16-04-2011 12:10 PM

That presumably LucasArts isn't oing after sites hosting the game other than the authors of the remake?

Luchsen 19-04-2011 10:26 PM

Or that they only go for sites that actively come to their knowledge because they create publicity - like Abandonia. (You'll figure out to whom which they/that/their refers.)

Mystvan 22-08-2017 01:30 AM

I considered this game a bit difficult without a Walkthrough.

I thought it funny that the characters in the game had disproportionate heads. One thing I loved to do was ring the bell several times to torment them. Another thing I found funny was Dr.’s wife chasing you out of her room.

I realized that there were two forms of game over:

- all characters are captured by the wife, son or one of the tentacles, but the game continues even if it is impossible to resume;
- you press the button (or something) and detonate the nuclear reactor (or something) - and the mansion explode killing everyone.
