Hello guys, I wanted to play some Time Commando but it didn't run :(
Tried to set the compatibility mode do Windows 95, tried dosbox and still don't work...

Please, tell me it's a way to run this marvellous game :kosta:

Mighty Midget 01-12-2006 12:45 AM

What didn't work, exactly? Any details, like error messages, system and suchlike, would help. Saying "it doesn't work" only gives one solution "pray".

Striderzin 01-12-2006 12:56 AM

sorry..well, in the windows version there is an error message after the introduction videos..
in the dos version I have opened the cd on DOSBOX, enter DOS folder and installed through setup.exe, but when I execute timeco.exe nothing happens..
someone has asked here if Time Commando runs in Windows XP - http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?a...;f=2&t=9784 he got an answer of this guy "the_fifth_horseman" to use a virtualisation software..where can I download one?

PS : sorry about my english..

edit : i'll not describe the windows version error cuz it's normal to Time Commando not run in WinXP..so I am looking forward through the virtualisation software solution..

Mighty Midget 01-12-2006 01:03 AM

Your English is as good as anyone's :) Sorry for yelling, but it's like 03.00 AM here, and I need some sleep.

Ok, what does the error message say? When you say "nothing works in dos", do you get any messages? Does Dos-Box jump back to the desktop? What happens? It's helpful to get the error messages.

EDIT: I don't know about that virtualization thing, but someone else may know.

Saphire 01-12-2006 06:17 AM

I'm afraid there's no way for it to run from a CD, but have you tried to run it from a created ISO on hard disc? And you're in any way better off trying it to run in DosBox than in Windows XP.

The Fifth Horseman 01-12-2006 03:04 PM

Go to Microsoft's site and get Virtual PC 2004. It's a free download from them.
You'll have to install the operating system on it, so you'd better have a copy of Windows 9x or a friend who has one.

Striderzin 01-12-2006 06:32 PM

thanks for helping...

here is the error of the windows version :

and here is the doxbox screen when I try to execute timeco.exe(the executable for running Time Commando DOS version)

I'll try to make an iso with Alcohol 120% now, thanks for the tip!

don't have a win9x right now, but if that is the only solution I'll try to get one =)

Striderzin 01-12-2006 07:22 PM

YAY! Got it running installing through a virtual drive.. Saphire, I love you!
and that makes sense, I've saw in another forum that Time Commando needs to take control of your entire CD Drive, and Win XP doesn't permit that..
Well, thanks to all \o/

Striderzin 01-12-2006 08:58 PM

oh well..it's running in windows version but with sound issues, sometimes it doesn't play the attack sound, damage sound =/ any idea?

edit : nvm, it's working fine now without directx sound acceleration =)

Hmm, you know you brought me on an idea myself. Maybe that's the solution to get Blood & Magic to run with clean good sound, maybe under VDMSound (it runs only in DosBox with sound, and not perfectly clean which slows the game down). Thank you in return, and have fun with the game :)

Striderzin 04-12-2006 07:30 PM

oh, just to warn anyone who will try to play Time Commando..It's not only the image that solve the problem, you can't skip the cutscenes too, it's boring but it's just 3 minutes lost =) oh, and you need to run it at Win98 / Win ME compatibility!

lwc 05-12-2006 02:03 PM

Virtual PC? Running the DOS version in DOSBox? Messing with DirectX? No way...all you have to do is right click the EXE, choose "Properties" and:
1) Choose "Compatibility"=>"Windows 98".
2) Choose "Compatibility"=>"Disable visual themes".

Now it runs as if it was designed for XP.

Wow, I don't even want to think how much time some of you invested in installing Win 9X inside Virtual PC, etc. instead of these 2 less than 10 seconds steps...

Just discovered this and tried this last solution. TC plays but the game hesitates every few seconds. Any other suggestions?

Are you sure you installed the game, then located its main EXE and did what I said?

If so, what can I tell you, it worked perfectly for me. I guess you can resort to the other solutions (start with decreasing your video acceleration).

Striderzin 06-12-2006 03:59 PM

if you disable the virtual themes you can skip the cutscenes without errors?

lwc 06-12-2006 05:17 PM

Just installed it, did what I said earlier and the answer is....no.

It's weird I just forgot it's needed to see the long intro and the levels' intros. I wonder if I used to have a solution for this or my memory just tricks me that I did.

While at it, I also found out I must click on TIMEWIN.EXE (the main EXE I talked about) directly instead of starting the game via the CD-ROM.

I read in one forum PE Explorer can fix this file. If anyone has it, feel free to share the fixed file...although I wonder how that guy fixed it when it's on the CD-ROM and if you copy the files to a new disk without a full "diskcopy" the soundtrack would be lost.

P.S.
Each time I cut the scenes and the game exited, the CD-ROM's music started so I know it by heart now. Is it the greatest music for a game ever or what?

BTW, here the errors XP records when you cut the scenes and the game exits:
Error #1:
Quote:

Windows cannot access the file D:\TIMEWIN.EXE for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program TIMEWIN.EXE because of this error.
...
Additional Data
Error value: 80000011
Disk type: 5
[/b]
That's a bunch of you know what, of course...it is then proceeded by...
Error #2:
Quote:

Faulting application TIMEWIN.EXE, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module TIMEWIN.EXE, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x000306f0.
[/b]

What fix do you mean? I have opened TIMEWIN.EXE at PE Explorer and this appears :

lwc 06-12-2006 09:43 PM

I have no way to know.

That forum post just said:
So I say just copy over the original CD-ROM to your hard drive, do the test fix, then try to install the game from your hard drive (if it demands to be installed from a disk, copy the files to another disk) - you'd lose the soundtrack but gain the ability to cut scenes. ;)
Well, if it works, which is the first priority, we can always then think of a way to add the soundtrack to a new disk.

Anyway, if you think this is the fix that guy meant (judging from his quote), you can also send me the fixed file and I'll do the testing I described above. It's just a small file, but it's all up to it.

Striderzin 06-12-2006 10:39 PM

Well, the game is already working..just want to fix the cutscene problem ;)
I have copied the entire disk, used PE Explorer to fix the exe and now I'm making an iso with the files..let's see if it will work :)

Striderzin 06-12-2006 11:10 PM

Tried what I said..but now when I execute TIMEWIN.EXE nothing happens =p

lwc 06-12-2006 11:24 PM

I know the game works except you can't cut the scenes...

Anyway, did you install the game before running the "fixed" EXE? Did you do what I said about compatibility (it has nothing to with fixing the file!)?

Striderzin 07-12-2006 05:07 PM

Yes, I have installed before running the fixed exe..and yes, I have set Win98 compatibility and disabled virtual themes..

lwc 07-12-2006 10:03 PM

So you have a new CD, without the soundtrack (maybe the game looks for it), but with a "fixed" EXE?

Now try without compatibility at all or with it but with other combinations.

lwc_guest 15-05-2009 05:35 PM

Forget the need for a fixed EXE. Turns out it's easier than anyone could have have imagined!

Guest12345 06-06-2009 07:21 AM

Sorry all, I've just found this thread after searching for not a short time.

Does anyone have the problem as I do? the installation was less than 1 second long, and the folder of the game does not contain anything but an uninstall file, a text file and a .hqr file. And I tried any solution that you gave but nothing happens. Is it because of the installation?

btw, the PE explorer is the only way I cant figure out how it work, if my prob isnt because of the installation, someone can explain how this PE work in this case plz?

The Fifth Horseman 06-06-2009 10:11 AM

What does the text file contain?

That's all and sorry that's a DEF not a text file

The Fifth Horseman 07-06-2009 11:33 AM

I was hoping that would be readme. Drat. *^_^

Did the installer create a shortcut to running the game in the Start Menu or on your desktop? Right-click that shortcut and choose "properties". Where does it point to (file/location)?
It's possible that the game only "installed" a minimum amount of data on your hard drive, and the rest is loaded from CD. It wasn't uncommon in that time period, given how large amount of data you could store on a CD compared to a hard drive (yay for 2 GB hard drives!)

tcfan 25-06-2010 07:11 AM

where can i get this game, i cant find it anywhere
