This might sound like a stupid idea but how about starting a chat room.

TheChosen 28-11-2006 08:18 AM

We had a talk about this before.

No. Why do we need a chat room when we have a forum?

RedHeadSebbe 28-11-2006 08:19 AM

Here is the old thread about chatroom http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?s...c=10007&hl=

Cause those are two completely different things, it's sort of like saying why do I need instant messaging when I have E-mail.

The Fifth Horseman 28-11-2006 02:12 PM

We've got the Shoutbox, and that should be enough.

Why DO you need instant messaging when you have e-mail?

Tulac 28-11-2006 06:23 PM

I was answering to TheChosen who uses MSN ;)

chainsoar 28-11-2006 08:49 PM

I don't see why someone couldn't set up an IRC channel. Whaddya think peeps?

EDIT: OK, I just read that other post. I don't see how an IRC channel would cause anyone to file a lawsuit against Abandonia. It would be easy enough to make the welcome message something like - "Welcome to #Abandonia. Please be respectful to other users. The management of http://www.abandonia.com and http://www.reloaded.org are in no way responsible for the content of this IRC channel, and the opinions stated here are those of the users, and are not necessarily supported by Abandonia management."

Or make it unofficial and make the welcome message "This channel is not affiliated in any official capacity with http://www.abandonia.com or http://www.reloaded.org or any part of the official Abandonia community"

Or something.

Mighty Midget 28-11-2006 09:13 PM

The way I see it, every abandonware site, no matter how "accepted", are living on the edge already, and there are some who want every site offering this stuff dead and buried. An IRC that (as the case may be) will be used to share info on where to get downright warez that in any way is linked to AB, will give these people the impetus to go for both AB and AR's throat.

Japo 28-11-2006 09:16 PM

But what added value would a chat room have over the Shoutbox?

chainsoar 28-11-2006 09:17 PM

But surely it would be a strictly monitored rule if there was such a channel. It's not difficult to kick someone from an IRC channel. Anyone who breaks the rules gets booted. Surely it's not that hard to keep an eye on stuff like that.

Japo - the shoutbox sometimes goes for hours without a comment. A chatroom would be more real-time. You can't really conduct a conversation in the shoutbox.

A very good question, and I'm wondering myself

EDIT: Of course, this could work the other way around: Do people here use the SB to spread warez or info on where to get it?

ReamusLQ 29-11-2006 03:50 AM

their @$$ gets banned by the admins if they do

Mighty Midget 29-11-2006 10:47 AM

Well, the question was rethorical, and yes, I recon you're right, but that was my point: We all keep our mouths shut in the SB when it comes to warez. We behave. My next point was: Will we behave differently in an IRC?

Some may do.
Don't forget all n00bs and visitors who won't bother with any rules and just start warez-talk right away.
Or those who'll spam with twenty-plus repeats of "i download the game and it no work wat do i do".

Let's just say I don't think anyone of us would like to open such a can of worms.

Tulac 29-11-2006 04:39 PM

Hah! Noobs don't use IRC! Hah!

But we can go fishing then :tomato:

Tom Henrik 29-11-2006 05:34 PM

We barely have the time and energy to keep the Forums moderated (especially with the Shoutboxes). How would we be able to moderate an IRC channel?

Besides, we have too much to loose on such a deal, and really nothing to gain from it.

You have the forum and the shoutbox. If you need more, then it is up to yourself to gather a posse and chat. MSN, for instance, allows a huge group of people to speak together at the same time.

(Just never ever invite me to such a group-meeting, unless you want me to block you. There's honestly nothing more irritating than a group of people trying to have a conversation in the same window.)

But my point is that those people would be banned the same way they are here. And in response to Tom, I wouldn't propose that Abandonia staff would necessarily have to constantly be in presence in the IRC channel, laying that on top of their work looking after AB. My idea was more of a sort of fan-made and fan-moderated Abandonia IRC community. There are ways to avoid all the problems that could arise, I think, such as the question of idiots demanding warez or providing them - simply ban them. My only reason for suggesting this whole thing was as a place where people who use AB could chat in a more real-time environment, and discuss games, or anything (legal) they wished to. While I love forums, chatrooms provide a whole different experience. It was just an idea that appealed to me. Chainsoar out.

I'm sorry I brought it up. I knew I would be opening a can of worms but I didn't expect so many fish to be biting :tai:

I'll close it then else you won't have any worms left.
Check Tom's answer for our view on the matter.
