Sensible World of Soccer
Feel free to comment and discuss this game here. Also, if you have any useful tips or tricks don't hesitate to share them with the others! Thanks!
Review and Download (if available) |
One of the best soccer games ever. Infinitely playable.
The only problem with it is that players don't age in career mode, so you can have Romario knocking goals in the 2015/16 season, when he'd pushing 50 in real life. Also, make sure you have good poke at the tactics editor, you can get a lot more out of your team with it. |
Sensible Soccer! WOW ^_^ Memories hehe. I liked this one better than the first Sensible Soccer.
|
is anybody able to set up sound? the install.exe executes a little weirdly in DosBox....
|
Could somebody please post some advice on how to run this game through DosBox?
I've managed to run it straight from windows xp and it works - however it has the problem of only recognising two keyboard keys at once - so you can never kick the ball diagonally :( When I try using DosBox to run sws.exe it either hangs or shows a stack overflow error and goes back to the prompt. |
hmmmm I think it is smashing great this gem has found a great home here :), but sadly I am not a footie fan at all. And I have very bad memories about people ruining joysticks (literally destroying them) while they played that game in a computer club I was a member back then. But it IS smashing great this footie game has found a home here :)

I usually don't like soccer games (and sports games in general except for racing games) but SWOS is définitely a must have!! I played it for uncountable hours alone or with friends. Yeah, graphics may have been pretty crappy, but the gameplay was incredibly fun and simple and SWOS had a tremendous players/teams database and many competitions. The career mode was soooo fun. SWOS is a real legend! :)

If you use d-fend to get the sound setup to work properly open the profile you've created for it, and tick the loadfix button, that seems to get it working. I have full sound and it runs lovely :ok: Hope that helps :monkey_dance: |
Really great and addictive football game! It's great that there is teams all over the world (including Finland :brain: ). Simple controls and good playability makes this clearly my favorite football game in computer (including SWOS I only have Microsoft Soccer)
|
Sensibile soccer makes you wonder how come they can not make highlights anymore these days. i mean with all the technology and graphics available they can't deliver you highlights at the end of the game.
oh and i liked the slomo movement in replays in these games and also their customizability. not to mention simple controls that made possible various tricks such a bycilcle kick, headers, long ball, low balls etc. on all that with just 4 directional and one action key!!!!! |
Bicycle kick?
How do you do that? |

[/b][/quote] Apparently Sensible World of Soccer European Champioship Edition, and Sensible World of Soccer 96/97, are the best. They have slightly different features (such as visible player attributes, and different ball-curling dynamics), from the one here. The only difference between those two is that 96/97 is more in date, but it's the difference between 10 seasons out and 11 seasons out, which isn't really worth much now. |
Can anyone else do transfers? I can't figure out how to up my offer.
|
Same problem here, i try to raise the offer but it refuses to do so. Where is exit button to leave the game? :wallbash: Other than that game is great. (5-3-2 formation is recipe to win, 100%)
|
I get by on purchasing cheap players and then using them as currency to up offers.

I figured it out!!@

dir *.exe dir *.com They will show you all the executables in the game directory. |

I've been outta Abandonia for so long...
...but I'm back now!!! >:) I'm back for this piece of soccer-programming art! Look at the marks - I can say this is not only the best (well, one of the best :) ) soccer game ever made, but this is one of the best of *ALL* games ever made!!! Wish you sleepless ball-kicking nights, friends! ;) |
Can you change controls in the game? I mean, I don't want to use the spacebar...

I actually don't like it. It plays annoying, it's hard to get to play the matches yourself, and is verry hard to control.
Sadly, all soccer games are like that, for 20 years already. |

The main weakness is the lack of ability to cross the ball in and then to head it even if you have a winger pacey enough and with enough control to actually get a cross in. Wingers in swos are usually nothing more than speed merchants who are only useful if they cut inside. The lack of an offside rule annoys me too to an extent and the refusal of computer defenders to close down the strikers. when one is storming towards goals they just sit back and watch as you slot them, its more like playing 11 versus 9 really. Aside from those it probably is as smooth as any football game out there, you can beat men, control long passes play rapid short passes aim your shots on goal, probably better than any of the fifa games for all their clever graphics. |
I have a problem here... my team has only 15 players (as one is injured and another with a red card), so, i cant get a 16 players team and the OK button does not appears !!! i have 1 more player but he doesnt apperars as the list shows only 16 players !! ..
bad game, i dont know what you like about it... |

In my opinion SWOS is the best football game I ever played. Yes, Pro Evolution Soccer is great, but it can't give to me the same feelings that SWOS gave me many years ago. Too much teams and a great market feature which was pure gold for that time. |
here's were to get some team updates for the current season:
http://www.geocities.com/swosfansupdates/ ... for it is all our beloved soccer stars that make SWOS even better! and my question: is it possible to display the name of the "player-with-the-ball" in the pc-version of the game? like thissss... (http://www.retrogaming.it/amiga/swos-.jpg) |

i find it hard to play it with my notebook ... it's harder to control
i have older version that runs with snes, it's easier to play ... what's wrong with swos ? |
First of all i would like to say that this soccer game rulez, kewl manager gam where you can conquer the whole world. I'm glad to be playing it again but i have a annoying problem:
When i'm in the game it looks like my keyboard is broke, but i don't have problems with my keyboard in windows. When i play swos i need to hit a key a couple of times before it actually works. Someone else has this problem? or know how to solve it? Pleas help so i can manage the whole world! Greetz Kelvin |
This is an DosBox issue AFAIK. I've experienced it when you shall type in something. There's quite a delay. I think the could be fixed with higher cycles. Then again, your soccer game would be really running very quickly! ^_^
|
can someone tell me wat the keys are to play i know the arrows en space bar is to shoot but the computer are faster then my players and i never score please help

I have a problems getting sound to run. I'm a noob when it comes to hardware configuring.
I did download D-Fend to try and configure it. Under the sound menu I have tons of options. Adress? IRQ? DMA? HDMA? Will any of this help me if I get it right, and what is right? And on my amiga I was amazing at scoring with my left winger with long shots. I ran down the flank (for just a second or two into the opposing side) then turn towards goal (diagonally) and make a sweet touch turning the stick from topright to topleft and then left, the ball will bounce just infront of the keeper who misjudges it and its a goal. Ugly, unrealistic but effective (direction in this example is of course while running "away" from yourself) Wingers rule 30+ goals in a season. We'll see if i can pull it off with the keyboard. |

your real sound card doesnt matter
and mdi.ini and dig.ini popped up for me when i selected wrong sound card. did you run install.exe at all or you just somehow tried to configure dosbox. you should run the install.exe and pick "ad lib music or 100%" for music and "creative labs SB or 100% compatible", make the program detect other settings automatically ..dont forget to save btw i would recommend you using pure dosbox and not d-fend |

Thanks for your patience |
[running with dosbox]
when you go to configure->sound device you should be seeing this http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/4173/untitledbq6.jpg if you dont see it then you are using dosbox with unconfigured sound drive, try opening dosbox.cfg like and use the settings mighty midget did. or just redownload and dont change any defalut settings btw, here are files after you configure the game for the right sound settings http://www.zshare.net/download/2788684f701fd6/ (are meant to be put in your game directory) |
Thanks for the files! Now sound runs flawlessly. I don't see that menu, in fact it's not even visible in my install.exe s.w.o.s file. This is the first game I try to run through DosBox so I would really like to get my configuration in order until I get another classic game down.
It may not be in your interest to try and help me but if anyone could help me fix my DosBox config I'd be even happier. I don't understand how my dosbox is supposed to be configured. I opened the config file in notepad and I guess these are the fields of interest: [midi] # mpu401 -- Type of MPU-401 to emulate: none, uart or intelligent. # device -- Device that will receive the MIDI data from MPU-401. # This can be default,alsa,oss,win32,coreaudio,none. # config -- Special configuration options for the device. In Windows put # the id of the device you want to use. See README for details. mpu401=intelligent device=default config= [sblaster] # sbtype -- Type of sblaster to emulate:none,sb1,sb2,sbpro1,sbpro2,sb16. # sbbase, irq, dma, hdma -- The IO/IRQ/DMA/High DMA address of the soundblaster. # mixer -- Allow the soundblaster mixer to modify the dosbox mixer. # oplmode -- Type of OPL emulation: auto,cms,opl2,dualopl2,opl3. # On auto the mode is determined by sblaster type. # All OPL modes are 'Adlib', except for CMS. # oplrate -- Sample rate of OPL music emulation. sbtype=sb16 sbbase=220 irq=7 dma=1 hdma=5 mixer=true oplmode=auto oplrate=22050 Again, thanks for letting me re-visit SWOS. I love this game! |
man.. its 40 C degrees out there. i would even draw it for you
oh i know now. when you press the install, it asks you where do you want to install the game from, right? all you need to do is to mount any directory as CD rom in dosbox, then it wont look for floppy drive so, for example, use command "mount d <any directory you wish> -t cdrom" and then install should run fine and your dosbox config is allright btw=) so no drawing for you=P |
Wonderful =)
:kosta: Time to play career mode!! |
I've got big problem. I can't make the speed to right value. If I slow it down to 20%, it lags, but over it, it'ss too fast to play! HELP! :sos:
|
Err  what 20%? Are you running this in DOSBox or in pure DOS with a slowdown utility? 20% sounds like mo'slo or something like that. Or is it an ingame speed control?
If you're not running it in DOSBox, then I suggest you get it. You can find it here on Abandonia for download. There you have great control of the speed which you run your games. |
I'm using dosbox... But it's still too fast :(
|
Have you lowered the cycles? That "20%" didn't rhyme with any cycle setting.
Press Ctrl + f-11 to lower the cycles, and Ctrl + f-12 to increase them. |
he s running with 'auto' cycles mighty=)
well first of all, it is supposed to go "that fast". but if you wanted to cheat and play slower, open your dosbox.ini and set value "cycles=auto" to "cycles=3000" for example, and "cycledown" to 10 for example (or different number, depends on how much do you want to slow down with ctrl+f11). then you can tweak the game to any speed you wish |
Oh, ok. I never had it on auto myself, so I didn't know.
|
It seems that nobody ever got an answer to the question of why the controls don't work properly, and how to fix it. I can't pass/shoot/tackle when I'm running in certain directions, and it's the most frustrating thing in the world to have the game running perfectly, but not be able to control your players.
|
as i remember even in dos it had some angles that were hard to achieve. such as running and going sideway at the same time. so the game is often played with just running straight, shooting and curving the ball with your mind powers :D

Hi,
I really want to play SWOS again, I've got the original CD for the ECE edition from 10 years ago. I can get it to run through dosbox (No sound but I don't really mind about that) but no joystick. I'm using my PS2 joystick through a converter but it just won't recognise it in DOSbox, Windows recognises it fine. I've trying playing with the keymapper but as soon as Sensi runs it seems to reset the key map. So the question is, can I get this to work? Or should I just give up? Someone mentioned about using D-fend to help but I see that has been discontinued. All help appreciated. Steve. |
codes?
How do you get past the codes...to start the game?
|
Our version has codes? Can't remember it has...
|
Kann mir jemand auf Deutsch erklären wie ich das Spiel in der Dosbox am einfachsten zum laufen bringe?
|
@Gizmo there is enough Page in German if you search it with google.

Does any one have the Sensible World of Soccer Version where Romario and Stoichkov is playing in Barca, and Baggio in Turin (Juventus). I think its season 94/95.
|
I´m playing Career and i´ve 3 injured players. How can i start the match? The OK button doesn´t appear, couse i don´t have enough players.
I can´t remembe, i played the game last time in 97. |
Joystick Use?
Hi Loving the game, but really really want to use a joystick! I have tried but can't get the game to recognize my joystick - any ideas would be appreciated?
Thanks in advance Trev |
Most old games don't recognize USB joysticks.
Use DOSBox to run the game, it helps both with this problem and running the games in general. |

I have a problem when playing Sensible World of Soccer..
I set to play the career mode, but when i am about to play my 5th(or about) match i am not able to press OK(in the place where i set my line up of player, just before kick off) to let the game begin Can somebody help me out?? |
I have just tried starting a CAREER yet again, but now i am NOT able to go ahead with the match after the second match... and it is not because i have injured players or something like that.. It seems like in this cracked version we are not allowed to play carreer ? Can that sadly be the truth.. i hope not.
Salute ;) |
SWOS is a total classic!
By the way, I can sell the original SWOS 96/97 (PC DOS) to anyone who is interested here. Moving out soon, and can't justify to take it with me. Let me know if interested. Also, I've been playing SWOS for a while now, but I just noticed one of my players do a bicycle kick (in SWOS 96/97 version however). Gotta love those cute little DOS games. :) |
No illusions anymore
WOW! That were days ago when I played the original SensSoc. I remember that I thought about buying the Game in 94 or so but kept playing the first Sensible Soccer. Now there was my chance due to abandonia.com, thx very much! Download, Sound-setting, Keys redefined and straight on the pitch.(Yes, in XP-Mode, no probs with THIS...)
What a disaster... As I mentioned, I played SensSoc a decade or more ago (oh my... getting old!:-) ) and in those days I defeated with my hometownclub Borussia Dortmund every Comp and Friend by 10-20 Goals ahead. Curve Kick-Goal, Curve-Kick-Goal, etc... This was the pure Sensible Soccer-feeling, Results like in Icehockey, hehe. But now, WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!! My own Goalie is a blindfolded SOB, Comp shoots from approx. 30-40 meters-GOAL!!! Oleole!! Not enough, independent from the strength of my opponent, I can fire bullets from the penalty-spot, smooth curve-kicks with my best forward (About 6,7 MIO pound), there seems to be an invisible wall... nothing goes in, this bastard is keeping his goal clean... OK, this can happen one or two times, but every match I start, NO CHANCE, ABSOLUTE NOTHING!!!!!!!! So for me, this game is an unfair piece of sh*t and gets the "Golden Pineapple" from me... SWOS has nothing, but absolutely NOTHING to do with the original game in my oppinion because of the absolute unfair and demotivating difficulty. My advice: Play Sensible Soccer, it will give u a fine glimpse on Videosoccer in the 90ies but dont insult ur Harddisk by copying this Crap on it. So,i have to admit, one thing about this game remains total "thumbs up", and this is the fact that I did NOT BUY it years ago. P.S.: Yes, I could handle the first SensSoc really blindfolded and score 10-20 Goals in 3 minutes anyway, I am not trying to tell some fairytales... P.P.S.: For those of u who like to get screwed up bad by this unfair game, it should realy work fine in XP. But beware: if u smash ur CPU and throw ur Monitor outta the window, dont tell me I didnt warn u. P.P.P.S.: 0/5 points from me |
SWOS have its audience that's for sure, I'm just not in it. Played better non-simulation football games.

I´m also a red fan! ;) |
It seems that I really can't figure the "advanced" techniques in this game. Shoot in at the door for example. I only once managed to shoot (dunno how exactly) and then I hit the right binder. Otherwise I usually pass the ball to the goal-keeper. :( The advanced curving is a mistery to me. Help would be appreciated. :P
EDIT: DAMN, I just scored my first goal!!! :D:D:D |
Played this game to death on my A1200 in my youth and stupidly bought it from The Marketplace (Xbox) and oh dear....should have stayed as a very fond memory :(
|
The game seems good, but is it normal for the players to move so fast? I mean, I played a few games and lost with very convincing results unless I played with Barcelona vs some unknown Luxembourg club, a game I barely won with the result 3-2. I tried running it on both dosbox and windows. When I run it on dosbox, the game slows down only at 1% of the cycles and then it's too slow. Is there a way to adjust it to run on 2 or 3% of the cycles?
One more thing, it seems I can only use the arrows keys and space-bar with space-bar being a sort of universal key serving for passing the ball, shooting it and sliding. Does anyone know of some different setting? |

I recently downloaded swow 96/97, and managed to start carrer mode... but I have the same problem as G1zmo. I have three injured players, and only one "loan" player that shows up... so of course I'm stuck because I don't have enough players! Is there a way to get through or is it a career mode bug on this version of the game? |
