Does anyone have Alone in the Dark 2 or 3?
|
I have both. ;)
|
Any way I can get copies? :)
|
Sorry, but I'm sure AitD 3 isn't abandonware, and I have some doubts even on AitD 2....
|
Alone in the dark 3 was released in 1995 and I couldn't find any buy-links for new CDs only used CDs so maybe it could be categorized as abandonware since it way passed the 5-year border...
Anyway buy link for used Alone in the Dark 3 can be found here: http://www.retrosoftware.com/10633.html (Retrosoftware looks to be a nice site btw cheap and has good reviews...) |
I'm fairly sure I have seen Alone 2&3 for download, so they are out there somewhere. But I can't remember where.
|
Wasn't Alone in the Dark the name of a TV show on Nickelodeon?
|

Wasn't Alone in the Dark the name of a TV show on Nickelodeon? IT was Are You Afraid of the Dark I loved that show :D Do you remember the episde with the monster in the pool?? I was scared to swim for days. :D |
It says it needs a password for the file Camera07.. also when I try to extract with winrar it says that file is corrupt..
|
May be because of the connection-problem. Try to download it again. ;)
|
Ok.....how do I get this to run on DOSBox?
|
The simplest way would be to open DOSBox and then drag the game file into the black screen.
|
Ok.......it doesn't work.....whenever I try to drag the file on the DOSBox black screen.....it comes up with the "restricted" sign.
|
Not into the screen, select the starting .exe of the game and drag it into the icon that starts DosBox. Then it should work.
|
Ok... then you have to do this the hard way ;)
I have opened the archive in c:\alone and I used DOSBox 0.62 After you have followed this picture to the letter, you just have to choose the first option (F1). Enjoy B) http://www.abandonia.com/~tomhenrik/alone.png |
Also.....
If you have Windows XP, the game runs flawless there too :P |
Ok thanks everyone.....it works now! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
|
Can anyone help me get the sound working in XP?
It runs fine without sound, but if I enable sound in the game config, it starts running extremely slow. What settins should I use for the sound card config? I am using onboard ac97. I would rather not have to install VDMsound or DOSbox. I have enough crap in my registry already. I love this game...... |
O.o
If you are a fan of DOS games, then I don't understand why you haven't got DOSBox. It is most certainly not crap. It is actually the best way of playing these games :OK: |
FYI the dosbox people hate the registry themself and dosbox doesn't add a thing for it.
|
I can't get the sound to work with it!
|
:sos: First and foremost, the setup you get to after starting ALONE.EXE is in FRENCH!
Allthough i understand parts of it, enough to get through it, i can't start the game. When i press Jeur (New Game i suppose) the DOSBox screen goes black and there is a little line blinking in the top left corner. |
Ops, sorry for the extra post, but i didn't get the whole issue into the first one (i happened to send it before i was done..).
This stupid blinking thing goes on for a while and nothing happens, nothing at all!. And i can't just start the file (and yes i'm using XP), if i do i get an error message: 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem C:\ALONE\ALONE.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. And i then get to choose either 'Close' or 'Ignore', both exits me back to the desktop. |
See if the steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324767 fix your problem.
|
Thanks! :w00t: But even if THAT worked, i can't get any sound!
I noticed that the sound was turned off in the options menu so i turned on Sound FX (Music couldn't be turned on) but then the game ran so slow it almost stopped! What can i do to fix this? I can only run the game by simply starting ALONE.EXE, neither DOSBox nor VDMSound works. |
WTF?
It's lagging.. How? I remember playing this game in 1994-ish and it didn't lag even then. Now it's lagging... Grr I want to be eaten by that mysterious blue thing that breaks in through the window, and the thing that comes out of I believe the floor board (it might've been the closet)... Why would it be lagging? |
It stopped lagging when I used Dos Box with the frame skip increased...

Hey, I play this game and it works perfect, then I reach a certain part of the game and whenever i load my games they crash. I'm running it in Windows XP without Dosbox. Please help!
|
Dos-game running under XP... now there's a rarity. Try running it under DosBox and see if it still occurs :OK:
|
It does still occur. I got the game from a different site and it doesn't crash anymore :eeeeeh:
|
this game is the best in the series in my opinion... the atmosphere is one of the best in any game i've played... who cares if your guy is a bunch of chunky triangles being attacked by something that looks like a marionette... the marionette jumps at you through the window and you'll jump... it's really scary!
one thing this game introduced that got picked up by alot of other games like resident evil is the camera angle changing throughout the game... this gives it a much more cinematic feel but also makes it stressfull when your being attacked and suddenly your perspective changes... i dunno but it seems like this is still something that 3d game makers wrestle with. super great! super creepy! try it now! :OK: |
I love the AITD series. I always got so absorbed in them, and it scared me sometimes. :D I have the trilogy.... on a Mac. :o LOL OK Im a hybrid user, I own them both, dont shoot me please.
If anyone needs help on a specific part of the game I will give you all I know. :) Im Q, or Quietus of clan Lethal Old Farts (www.lethaloldfarts.net) [An online gaming clan, we play mostly Quake 2, and BF 1942. I srtill play Duke Nukem 3D WOOT!!] by the way. You will be seeing a lot more of me in here now that Ive discovered a site for my first all time favorite games. :) Police Quest, Space Quest and Kings Quest. Incidentally.... anyone every hear of the game Thexder???? Chat with you all soon!! |
I have the Alone in the Dark The New Nightmare, and when i played the first of the AITD series, i almost die..it was great!!! visit my page to get some info of various games.
http://pipogorosito.tripod.com I recomend the abuse |
This game is great. I played this game 5 years ago and I finally beat it within a week. Though U have to admit the game is really, really, really, hard without the walkthrough. Make one mistake, U cant go back and fix it (unlesss u loas a saved game waaayyyyy far back) what really got me going was when the rats in the celler started attacking me. Even though there is only two rats, they seem to be doing like 5 damage....... Oh and by teh way. How the hell do u run? I beat the gmae always walking LOL.
|
I believe it is done by doubleclicking the direction where in theory the believed character is wanted to run /-

Alone in the Dark 1 (SPOILER)
Does anyone know what's wrong in AITD 1 if I cant throw the lantern on the tree at the end? The tree doesn't set on fie and the lamp goes off whatever I do. Thanx |
First of all, U DONT throw the latern at the tree, it is an invicible magical tree. It is a cursed tree that has teh power to destroy. U must find the magical talisman from the secret passage in the library (where the invicible monster is, u have to kill it with a special knife.) place the talisman on the tree, and WALA! The curse is gone, and YOU WIN!!! LOL and by the way...... Have any of you haev beaten the game? The ending was REALLY distrubing but funny LOL.
|
More people should use the D-Fend frontend, linked to on the DOSBox site.
Did you know that they've made a horrible movie out of this? Unsuprisingly it has nothing to do with the game except that there's a mansion and the protagonist is named Ed Carnby. Uwe Boll directed it, (House of the Dead) what a hack. |
+DMONIO+ :max: Personally I am play this game when it was thrown like newly, always I am liked and recomendaria by all the fanatics who are interested for the qualit games, Today in day it is not the great thing compared with the games that exist, but it was in his moment a great game, giving us many hours of entertainment all. +DMONIO+ |
I have AITD 1 but i cant get it to work. after the beginig sequence of the gut walking up the house it goes back to windows. If anyone can help that would be great. THX.
|
alright... ive done pretty much everything there is to do in the first room, completely, but every time i go down the stairs it makes me go back up. is this copy protection or an error or what? if its either, how do i fix it?
thanks for the help... hass |
Quote:
Everything you got to do is when you're about to go down the stairs just press the key to move forward just once, and when it's done and you're down try to stay away from the stairs and move to the sides. hope it helps :D |

Works like a charm now. As for the game itself... I remember reading a review in GamePro for the 3DO version and thinking it looked amazing. I've always wanted to play it since then, and now I have my chance. On first play, the graphics are a bit dated, if not just downright silly. But the gameplay is there. I can see where Resident Evil got its ideas from. |
where can i buy alone in the dark 1 (english original version)?
|
I really hope none of you AITD fans have been subjected to the movie supposedly based on this game.... As stated in a previous post it has NOTHING to do with the game.
It's sad, really, because this game could have been a great movie, very much in line with the dark, creepy, but not buckets of blood trend in horror movies lately, (i.e. The Ring). This Uwe Boll character tried to turn it into some weird kind of Alien vs. Predator thing with gun battles and explosions and junk. Actually, there's an interesting article on www.somethingawful.com today written by a screenwriter who wrote the first incarnation of the script for this movie, but left the project when it became clear that Uwe Boll was not interesting in making a good movie faithful to the atmosphere of the game. From what the writer says, it seems like his ideas for the movie would have been GREAT and would have captured what we all love about this game. It's a good read, if only to get a taste of a movie adaptation of AITD that all of us fans of the game could have actually enjoyed... |
Using my pc at work - forgot my password, but i'll still post using my forum name...
Saw the movie last weekened. HORRIBLE !! I should have read the post above before spending my $ on this movie. The only good thing in the movie was Christan Slater. The movie has nothing to do with this game at all. The movie just used the name. Its funny how the ignorant media reporters keep saying "The movie based on the video game 'Alone in the Dark' is in theaters now... " Reporters are just plain dumb. This is a great game, very creepy. If you are going to play it, try to do it in the dark at night. Even while its raining if you can. It will add to the enjoyment of the game big time. (Thats how i played phantasmagoria the first time - very freeky.) Dont see the movie - if you think about seeing the movie, i have a suggestion first. 1) Run really fast, head first, into a concrete wall, then when you wake up if you STILL want to see the movie, 2) repeat step 1 again. |
can sombody plz help me i seem to be stuck in this game! :akimbo:
|
What seems to be the problem? :eeeeeh:
|
well the part is when you first are tryin to get down the second flight of stairs ther are these two demon things that do these flip atacks and i think i have to use the mirrors or somthing but im not sure! :akimbo:
-------------DragonLancer |
hello!
aitd1 crashes to dosbox prompt when the intro has passed (as carnby walks up the stairs), what could be the reason? thanks! |
Getting past the guards is easy.
Use both mirrors on the desks (or tables) near the window. After that the demons die. Now i have a question :sos: .How can i kill those little spiders? |
YESSSSS!!!! I finaly beat the game yayayayayya it was hard but hey it was fun (it made me realy mad when i forgot to get the key off the fire place in the dace room and i was already at the chest so i had to start over :() but anyway it was fun and kind of creepy I like it 10/10 :guns:
--------------DragonLancer |
i can't seem to get use any of the actions in the game. the mouse doesn't work with it, i'm not sure if that's normal or my fault. but i'm trying to push the cabinet in the attic and when i highlight 'push' and hit return it goes back to the scene but the character doesn't do anything. same with fight and open.
i'm using dosbox on os x panther. any help? |
It works this way, when you push use/whatever you need to press space to use or open near a item, you don't use the mouse, to fight, you press the forward button to kick, backwards kicks, left punches with the left hand, right punches with the right hand, to do that you need to select fight in the menu first, see the manual, it's much clearer.
|
I have a little question. How you can actually leave your first, starting room O.o :tomato:
Something on Aitd controls simply confuse me :eeeeeh: |
No idea, I fooled around in the room for awhile, then I managed to get outside, I don't really know what you have to do...
|
if you mean the "VERY FIRST" room, you have to go over to the stairs in the upper right corner of the room (if you have a realy fast comp. like me your guy will instantly go back up, I figured out a way to get it to stay though) when you get to the bottom of the stairs INSTANTLY press ESC. then press ESC. again it should let you stay there now :[img]http://www.abandonia.com/forum/html/emoticons/laugh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='laugh.gif' /> good luck :guns:
-----------Dragonlancer |
Ah OMG I'm so mad I got so far into the game and poof I die, surprise surprise, it does'nt auto save. I'm at the beggining, how exactly do you save this game? Thanks
|
I finished it when i was kid...in 1 year...
|
Wow ! I never thought an old game like this is scary. Great game ! :OK:
The only thing I hate in AITD is when a monster hits you and push you in a corner. It's very hard to hit back while the monster continues to hit you like crazy. I noticed that sometimes when I start the game, the music doesn't work. I simply restart DosBox and continue until the music works. If the game runs slow on your PC, increase CPU cycles (CTRL-F12) until it runs fine in DosBox. As for saving games, press ESC (It brings you to the main menu) then choose Save. |
How do I get past the protection in the beginning of the game. i always select something, but then i start a game, see the intro, and then i come back to the dos prompt. :help:
|
This game is not as frightening as I remembered it to be.
I think that the most scary game I have ever played is System Shock 2. I still can't play that game for more than about 30 minutes without turning it off due to my nerves. Man... that game gives me the creeps. Shame that this doesn't have that level of scariness. |
Hi to all! This is a great game and I enjoy playing it but i have a problem with the enemies, they seem to be invurnelable and no matter how many times I hit them they don't die.
Can anyone help me ' please! |
what exact enemy are you talking about. Because there are some that are invunerable and there are those that can only be killed by special weapons.
|
the rats in the cellar and that pirate guy
|
Im not sure about the rats, but for the pirate you have to kill him using a certain sword.
The sword you have to use is the one you get when you kill the suit of armor down the stairs. You throw a heavy statue at the suit of armor and it dies and you pick up its sword which you have to use for the pirate. |
this game is kinda cheesy. I have mixed feelings torward it.
|
thanks, you've been a great help
|
I recently recieved alone in the dark as a present (my gf managed to get a cd of it, she didn't just dl it onto my computer). WEll it turns out that it's a "Pay as you play" and once you put the mirrors up on the upstairs lobby, the game finishes. It then tells you to call Infogrames (long distance number) and tell them my secret number (24180) and have my crdit card handy and they will bill me for the actual codethat lets me play the rest ofthe game. My question is : does anybody have a solution to that? the access number? a patch of some sort? wanna get back to killing some monsters real soon :titan: so any help would greatly be appreciated
|
Does anyone remember the "high quality" music that came with the CD-ROM version?
I'd like to find that if I can. It was sweet. |
Quote:
1- not work because game is so old and lo longer sold 2- they give "rest of code" to you for free because game is no longer sold |
I loved the atmosphere of the game, but it also frustrates me big time!
How the f..k was I supposed to realise that I have have to throw statuette on that living armor to kill it?!!!  :spam: :wall:  And all those f..kin' books that I've thought were some kind of help seem to be worth muck!!! I spend hours analizing them for nothing!!! Why I can't kill a 99,99% of the monsters?! Special weapons you say? Where?! How am I supposed to know that I need one in the first place? Why I can't even kill a f..kin' mouse even after 125 hits?!!!! :ranting: And why those godamn ghosts don't like any record on the planet. They just don't want to dance no matter what I play! Why so many adventure game elements with such a crappy interface?! :spam: Please don't lie to me telling me that you passed this without a walkthrough. I managed to complete every adventure game so far in a blink of an eye, but this puzzles are......a wreck! :ranting: Timegate is a game with the same interface and much better puzzles... It should be posted here. I'll go and cool off now... :spam: :spam: :spam: :spam: |
Wow... Someone is really frustrated...
''Znam kako ti je...'' - to avoid my warning, I said that I know how he feels! :hypocrite: |
Oh, I see.... :wall:
I apologize for my ignorance |
The ghosts dance to "the dance of death" or somethin'. Anyways i just downloaded the game but i scared to go anywhere! If you're stuck just goto the walkthrough on this site. :OK: I wish there was an assault rifle. :sniper: :rifle:
|
Yeah, I've read the walkthrough. Some puzzles are really weird and hard to solve. Like a secret passage in the library! Like I have time looking for secret passages with that monster on my back! Apart from that, the game has one hell of an atmosphere!
|
Yeah, it took me a few trys to kill al those zombies. I'm still looking for a way to kill the knight. Anyway great game guys. I hpe 2 and 3 are abandonware...
|
After I get up to the attic the game shuts down. Does anyone know why????????? Also at the beginning what 2 items am I to select? If anyone could help me out that would be great. Thanks.
|
Quote:
|
It will not let me begin the game. I get as far as the woman walking into the attic and it shuts off. I don't get to see any monsters or anything. Help me someone. :wall:
|
Alright I'm in this game and I have one really funny question. When I first went into the dance hall I put the gramaphone on the table. Then I died from the dancers. So I did it again. Now it will not let put the grammaphone onto the table it says there is no room????????????????
|
Never mind I don't need to put the gramaphone down. I just need to use the certain record. It's all good after much research and doing the WHOLE game again.
|
Running doesn't seem to work. I press the up key then press it again quickly like they say in the manual and Edward still walks! :(
|
Were there many differences in the CD-ROM version? I guessing the one here is the original floppy disk version.

Does anyone had problems with the graphics? I'm using the DosBox, what solved my sound problems, but I can't get the game to run in the high details level. Both low an high details options had the same result, and, for what i remember from when i played this game many years ago, i'm now getting the only the low definition. I could fix it with the "Free in the Dark" patch (http://sourceforge.net/projects/fitd/), but then the sound doesn't work, and the game is in french. i'm using a GeForce FX5200, in Windows XP. |

one of the best games ever developed.

What is dosbox? |
Quote:
DOSBox is a program that will let you play DOS games on a newer computer. Here's the link for a short description: http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=programs. The actual download is here. And there's also a nice tutorial on this site that will help you to set it up properly: http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=index&FAQ=1. Make sure you read that one, it's very helpful. |
well, every guest is saying for the same thing, that game doesn't works. Although DosBox is there, but it would be good to make it more noticeable, like on the Game Download page, adding a line "Please Use DosBox to avoid problems". this game discussion has already went 11 pages long and I don't think that someone has really discussed the game as such. :whistling:
|
Well, the 'Compatibility - DOSBox' button is kind of obvious, isn't it? And it's also covered in the FAQ section. The only problem is that apparently nobody ever bothers to read it.
|
everybody wants to play the game as soon as possible, they get excited and just ask directly without looking! Bcoz the games on abandonia are cool ones. :hypocrite:
|
But then adding the line "Please Use DosBox to avoid problems" wouldn't help much either, would it?
|
Quote:
|
What exactly isn't working?
|
Nothing happens when I try to play, I am not sure why
|
How are you trying to play?
|
Well, but I'm a complete idiot when it comes to computers, and even I got DOSBox to work fine using Anubis' excellent tutorial.:)
But what I actually meant there was that it's a bit odd that people seem to be scared of a good old DOS command prompt. It's not any more difficult than clicking on an icon, is it? |
Quote:
:wall: |
Well, you might want to try making a post in the troubleshooting forum, then. Try the search function first, though, to see whether there's already some solution to your problem somewhere.
Sorry I can't help you there, but I never did play Alone in the Dark - it sounded and looked way too scary for me.:D |
No way AJ
You should try it It is an awesome game I love it :OK: |

Hello to all !!
Sorry for my English :-( I've got two problems with my original AitD - CD. First problem is, the game will not start with CD, because it cant recognize it. I can browse and open every single file on the cd manually, but the game wount start. My cdplayer is ok, other cd's spinning really fast. But the AitD-CD spins slowly. I tried to play with an cd-image and it works, but the game/my harddisk is too slow for a good game. Can anybody help and explain why this original-cd wount work the right way? Maybe its a problem with windows but i dont think so. I installed the game with winstall.exe and dos-environment starts automatically. Second problem: in 99% of all attempts the person will not run after a release and re-click of the up-arrow. Is there a possibility to change the keyboard settings, maybe in windows? I thank you all for your answers. |
Does anyone know where I can buy the Alone in the Dark One from? I need a new one, the one I have is downloaded from computer, that may be my problem.
Thanks!!! |

I've gone through the game and everything, and there's an item missing from how I remember it as a kid. There was this red book in the library that killed you even if you were on the pentagram. I can't seem to find it. Which stack is it in?
|
Hello, can anybody tell me what is written in the yellow Book?. I think it was called "de vermis miteris" and if you try to read it, you are punished with a horrible death. Does it ring?
Thanks for your help |
Quote:
hmmm I dont know what you mean by that. The book contains a deadly spell (If I remember right, so when you read it you die) Its pretty simple really...dont read that book!!! :D |

|
hmmm... could be... I played it ages ago but all that I rmember was that a book killed you if you read it.
I think I should play it again before I post another. :bye: |
Quote:
Man I suck at this game. I got up to that monster in the library. |
ohhh right. I was thinking maybe it was about the pentagram but that makes far more sense. :D
That monster in the library is funny!!! It like a polygonal fat man!! (Except he isn't impared by narrow book cases!!!) ;) :D |
I know. He always gets me. I've no idea on what to do there.
|
Yes, it's that book which contains a deadly spell. There's just one problem: as i remember it was written in Latin O.o ... I hoped, that anyone here could translate it for me. That would be nice!!
Another strange thing i noticed is about: Alone in the Dark II Remember the part, when the whitch catches you in the house?(a few moments before you take the part of the little girl). I've downloaded the game from another Abandonia Page, and in this version(after being catched) you still play the girl, but not on the ship!! You are in the Garden outside the house...there is a car you can drive with, and some of the evil guys in yellow jackets playing with instruments. Does anybody know had the same version?!? Because i don't know what to do there O.o Thanks for any kind of help Have a nice weekend |

hey guys, just found my old CD version of AITD 1. Works fine on WinXP, but without any sound! It lets me select the soundblaster correctly in the setup, as well as having sound in the game disabled and music enabled (although actually there is NO sound at all playing).
I tried dosbox as well - using a vitual D: drive for the cd image and the regular c to c mount. When i try running the game then, it just stays at a black screen without anything happening. Increasing CPU cycles does not lead to an advancement as well. Anyone know how to set up this game properly in xp with or without dosbox? |
If anyone thinks they can get the 3d models out of the game that would be great. I feel like making a movie about it or another game lol.
|
Thank you so much free freddy and henrik.. :-) I could make it work too.

Hi, glad to find an Alone in the Dark forum alive!!!
NW, Ive got the entire Trilogy in bin/cue format, installed it with daemon tools, BUT when I try to play it just doesn´t recognize, intead it says: "Couldn´t find disc/Please insert CD-Rom" or wathever... So is there a way to play this version of the game? Even Dosbox shows the same error... |
Ok I´ve got it working on Dosbox...BUT it´s slowwww like I was running a Gamecube emulator! o_O
and w/t music In the CMD it still can´t find the CD drive...any help? |
Hi, well I have the same problem, withount Dosbox the game doesn´t recognize the disk, cause it´s not D: (it´s H: I´m using Daemon BTW).
SO i Have the same problem...kinda |
Quote:
If isn't than you need Dosbox to get it run under XP etc. Dosbox is easy to get the hang of and there are great threads in the troubleshoot forum, like this one. |
Ehm, this is probably a stupid question. But where do I download the game and what do I do after that? Could someone guide me through the process?
|
Quote:
1) - go to the main site and look for the game. 2) - find the big red NO-GO button. 3) Click on it and read the text carefully. 4) Find out, you are not allowed to download the game and why! There's no step 5, because you can't get the game, so you can finally go for that walk in the park with a book under your arm and read it on a bench with the Sun warming your face. :ok: |
theres no download link on the abanonia site so i cant download it wats wrong?
|
ESA protected ;)
|
then how will i download it???for free of couse
|
dowloading it is illegal, so I can't put any link. Plus I never look after it so.
|
Here, 5 bucks for the whole trilogy.
If you want to have the game that bad, buy it. Ebay (if this is against the advertisement rule, please remove this) |

|
Sort of, it freezes and run extra slow on parts, works a lot better if you run it in DosBox :)
|
I'm as far as the part where you need to play the 'dance of death' record to make the ballroom dancers move. However whenever I try to play it dosbox freezes up and gives me this error:
The instruction at "0x6ac89190" referenced memory at "0x0285c4f8". The memory could not be "read". I'm running XP and the newest version of dosbox, and the rest of the game has worked fine till now. Any suggestions? |
Hi!
First: Sorry for my english, I´m german ;) I love the AItD-game and I want to play it again. I use the DOSBOX and after I push F1 (start game) there´s just a black screen and the cursor is blinking in the corner. But nothing happens. Does anybody know what I could do??? |
Welcome. Your English is not that bad, despite of your Germanness.
I am unfamiliar with Alone in the Dark, I don't think I can be of much assistence. What have you done exactly? (Commands etc.) |
I just start the game in the DOSBOX.
I opened the start-file (here TATOU.COM) and after that it appeared a window where I could choose between START GAME, CONFGURATIONS and END. I chose START GAME and after that I just saw a black screen with the blinking cursor. I tried other DOS-games with the DOSBOX and there weren´t any problems. It´s just that one game I want to play which I can´t play. That´s very angrily  |
I sort of got it on Dosbox, but I typed in the directory (C:\alone\alone.exe) and it says "Alone in the Dark Loader done on the 92/10/30
By The Terminator of [FLT]... Program now loading! look for other [FLT} Releases... C:\>" That's what it says...LOL... What's wrong? |
:sniper: It´s a great Game!!! The first true Survival-Horror-Game!!! I really like ist to play, even after so many years, it´s just amazing!!!!!
I´m a great Resident Evil Fan and so i like to play Alone in the Dark also. I can only repeat: GREAT GAME!!! One of the finest ever made!!! :bye: |

It is, with maximum posts-per-page setting. ^_^
|
I also came here trying to find out how to beat the game. I fooled around for about an hour trying to figure out what to do before I checked a walkthrough that said you have to throw the lit lamp at the tree. That doesn't work for me. You say you're only supposed to put the talisman there, but about three walkthroughs say you're supposed to burn down the tree. Just putting the talisman there doesn't end the game...
|
I played this game with a friend about ten years ago, when I was an adventure games freak-boy (that is, before turning into an adventure games freak-youngster) and it REALLY scared me. It's great.
For all I remember, you have to place the talisman in front of the tree quickly before the monster grabs you, (there you will see some picture; the curse is gone) AND THEN throw the oil lamp towards it. Don't forget to light up the lamp with the lighter BEFORE throwing it, it won't work if it is not lit. |
this game rulez ^_^
|
Loved this game. I remember playing it when I was little, and the first time that monster jumped thru the window in the beginning scared the crap out of me... still kinda' does, actually, LOL.

Hi there, So glad i can finaly solve the game's puzzle like 13 years later:D
I'm trying to make the game work with sound..had to0 install it in dos version, with the wicked off graphics with no correct text wrote anywere in the installer....Koz if i install it with windows the game will say no cd and stuff....But here my problem, i cant get no sound at all, the game runs perfectly but when i activate sound it freeze the character after half a step forward...and make no sound anyway... I tried to make the sound be activated with the dos installer but it makes no changes... I've got a soundblaster X-fi e-pro. I tried using dosbox too, but i canot set a mounted drive as when i press the backslash it makes like if i pressed enter on a texter...goes to the other line....frickin wicked....And i cannot get it to run the game by drag-and-drop like told earlier in the whole tchat here in the forum........it makes a (/) cursor..LOL..by the way dos is so frickin complicatred...even more when its emulated :tai: im under Xp....Soon under vista if i can get some 512mb 266mhz ddr ram at a so cheap price that ill just stay silant....(wicked, the board canot use 400mhz ddr ram) i just whish i could hear teh vinyl with the gramophone...and feel the ambiance a bit more...:P Thats all...just whish someone has the Right answer:) (too great...im almost not scared anymore of that game..all these years after its release):D -----------edit---------- Oh noooooo:( there comes the worst thing that could ever happens with the game; a bug. It happened at the whole beginning when going down the first stairs and it happens again so near to the end:( The character goes in the tunel behind the barrels in the whine cellar and when it shows the worm hole scene, the character turns back and goes back uin the hole...Whatever how many times i try to pass throught again, whatever if i quickly press the up arrow so it doesnt interferes...or change action..equip any objects...the character just goes through, stand, turn and return in the cellar room.....What can i do then.....Atari/Infogram should realy make a redesing of that game...with new graphics made out of the old drawings with a little enhencement...new characters...a bit more text in the books...mayby more books....and a bug correction..hahaha...seriously, this game is fameous.....but so dissapointing falling on such a bug so near to teh finale:P |
As for DosBox: You can set drive mounting in dosbox.conf, so you won't have to type it in manually. (for exact how to, read your readme)
As to the backslash/enter issue, are you using a non-english keyboard layout? Try switching to UK or US layout and see if that helps. |
An english kn layout huh......oooh well:P
Finaly beaten the game...The trick with the dead men's tree is realy easy, kill the green slug as many times it comes to disturb you, (after putting the talisman in place of course) when you're quiet, light the lantern, save, throw it...you need to be the most near to the tree to be able to reach it....then it turns red, you die....try again, fire, tripple the up arrow like a drum and escape.....as teh run key is way hard to make work...you might have to do it many times..also if your health is low .. dont even think about makin it in one piece...:):P the bone-head car driver scared me for a second haha:P |
Okay, maybe I'm stupid or something, and I probably am, but I can't even get the into the game. Sort of.
Okay, so Dos works on this computer. I've unzipped and all that. I open the game. I go, new game and it asks me for two items on page X of the manual. I downloaded the manual but there is no page that high and no item pictures in there. Am I stupid or is this a trick? |
The game should be already cracked. Try:
a) confirming without entering anything b) confirming with entering a random sequence |
Okay so what happens is I choose any random ones and it goes to the choose character screen. After I choose my character it goes into another screen (presumably the introduction) and nothing happens. I can see something at the end of the road which looks like it should be doing something.
No writing pops up, I can't use my mouse or type. Do you just have to be patient? |
You're not trying to run the game in Windows, are you?
|
Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!
I had a H.P. Lovecraft game called "Call of Cthulhu". it's modern game (better graphics than half-life 2), BUT IT WAS MADE BY "H.P. Lovecraft". CAN YOU BELIEVE IT. After this game, i don't think any kind of another modern game, or dos H.P. Lovecraft games. it's the game that gave my the creeps, but not effects (Call of Cthulhu feels like the enemies would be right outside your door, and you are getting away from them). bad thing i deleted it :( . Then i started Call of Cthulhu, i think i was playing at living room, lights on. however, it still gave me creeps, as you can think every shot would kill you (i was on easiest setting) but it never did. also, you can think enemies would be right outside your window, and would kill you anytime you play. sorry i was :offtopic: . to say truth, Alone in the dark is nothing compared to Call of Cthulhu (bad grafiks, and no need to get spooked) but look at the time! Alone in dark was made at 1992, and Call of Cthulhu, i don't know, maybe 2005. but, for it's time (not so sure  ) great. I don't get it why should you get scared?.. ups!, sorry i never checked Alone in the dark so i don't know about sounds. sorry i was :offtopic: |
First off wanted to say great site.
As for Alone in the Dark 1 I downloaded it and it plays great! The bad thing is that I noticed that this is the floppy disk version thus no narration :( . I have the original CD version (the one with AitD1 and Jack in the dark) and remember playing it when I was a kid. My question is is it possible for you guys to offer the CD version for download OR any tips on how I would get my CD version working with DosBOX. (Note: I'm running Ubuntu Linux so any tips involving Wine would be helpful) Thanks :OK: |

How do you execute the commands pls ? I push the escape key, select the order then, but nothing happens when going back in the game (I run DosBox under XP). Thanks for your help :sos: Bernard (Fr) |

So, I have a problem, and I'm hoping you guys can help.
When I start Alone in The Dark, I get a little screen where it asks me to identify some items on page whateverMcWhat. Now, the copy I got didn't have any manuals or documentation, but when I downloaded Abandonia's manual, it didn't have that either. ... Does anyone have a copy of what I need, or at least a clue as to what I'm supposed to select? Thanks in advance, Anon. FYI: If it'd be quicker, I can be reached at [BEEEP]@gmail.com. Any help is appreciated. |
I finish the game on DosBox with no problems. I've tryed to play the sequel, but for an unknown reason I couln'd push the statue on the begining of the game.

Actually I AM using the sword from the knight (I read the notice about it in this forum) but apparently it doesn't work; I just don't seem to wound him. How much hits does this need? I think I hit him thirty, fourty times. I don't see blood and he don't die. :sos: Can you help me someway? Is it a bug? Have I to begin it all again???... Thank you very much!!!!!!!!! |
I cannot start the game.It pops a red screen :virus found in tatoo.com .What to do?Help pls.
|
Your problem description is insufficient for us to provide a proper answer.
Please answer the following questions: 1. What operating system do you have? 2. Did you try using VDMSound or DosBox to run the game? 3. What exact steps did you follow when trying to run the game? |
I have an old 386 with 4 megs memory and when i try to start the game, like i said before ,the red screen appears with the message:Virus found in tatou.com .Please reboot. The sistem blocks and i have to reboot.I downloaded the game also from another site and it was the same problem.Someone wrote that the game runs also on 386 computers but i am not so sure.
|
Do you have a "Virus check" option enabled in your BIOS? See if the game works with that disabled.
|
sorry for late reply,i can't enter bios ,i hit f1,f2...f12 after startup but no use.Anyway i don't think this is the problem.I'll play it when i have my Pentium fixed. Thanks anyway.
|
Try hitting Delete during the memory check, that's the one used for most old machines.

I have read through everything on here dealing with sound, so I am sorry this question has repeated itself again! I have windows XP and dowloaded Dosbox. I went through the tutorial and did what it asked as far as changing to
mount C C:/DOS/CDrive mount D D:/ -t cdrom C: CLS Then everything was downloaded and saved under cdrive/flash. When I type install it said that it was and illegal command. Config says use -writeconfig filename to write the current config use -writelang gilename to write the current language strings. Then the setup command is also illegal. So I went ahead and started the game. It works! But no sound. I went through the forum and seen that I should dowload SBPCI I copied everything into cdrive under flash and copied and pasted config and autoexec from SBCI to yhe cdrive folder under flash. I also went to microsoft with a link available under one of the forums and then I went back into wordpad and wrote config.nt and autoexec.nt for the game itself. I never deleted the others. Also why is it at the beginning in french. All my options to start the game and check out the sound are in french. After messing with those for a while I turned the music on (what it says when you press escape during game play) But it says the sound effects were off. Maybe if I messed with those a little longer it would work? All files were extracted after I added the others for sound and I restarted my computer. I have been at this for 4 hours, so please help! |

Love the game, but is there any way to cheat? I know the old official game had cheats, but for this version...? Anything?

LOL. Don't use a walkthrough that is going to tell you more than you want to know. I strongly recommend the following site for those game playing times when you feel like inventing new words.

So how exactly do you run again?
I am quite far into the game and only managed to get across the bridge by jumping (JUST MADE IT!) but now i cannot figure out how to run. Ive tryed tapping the up arrow key then holding it, tapping it continuously, everything! I cant seem to find a way to get this damn Carnby guy to run! I managed to jump my way past the worm thing at first and kill the little monster, but as soon as i see the worm face to face at the other end of the tunnel it kills me. Am i not supposed to do this and go to where the worm originally was when i entered the cave? Thanks in advance! I remember having nightmares as a kid when my cousin would bring his old 3DO over and make us play the game. |
Tapping twice and then holding the arrow key worked for me. I had to slow the game down to get it to work, though. Try reducing the cycles in DOSBox. It would often take more than one try. I feel your pain. :tai:
SPOILER ALERT I remember the giant worm scene well. After you kill the furball backtrack and go into the cave opening where the worm was the first encounter. |
Unfortunately the tunnel the worm is originally occupying leads to a cellar with an invincible rat! According to most guides i am supposed to end up on a wooden dock of some sort? I tried going through the rat wine cellar and up the stairs and they appear to collapse or something. This part is perticularily tough because i still am not able to run!
|
Quote:
Did you make a wrong turn in the cave at the Y intersection? Unfortunately you will need to run to finish the game. There is a collapsing bridge at some point that you need to run across. Have you tried reducing the cycles in DOSBox? Running is tricky ... press and hold the up arrow and then very quickly release and press the up arrow again. |
Belive it or not i got across the bridge simply by using the "jump" feature. But runnign seems to be getting the better of me. After i kill the little monster i continue foreward and come face to face with the ugly worm. Am i supposed to run backwards and go where its rear was sticking out after it moved the first time? Thanks.
|
Sorry for the double post but;
I did the undoable! I managed to beat the game (well...sort of) without running at all. I used the jump option to get across the breaking bridge, to avoid the worm and to beat the tree schene. Theres only one glitch; at the end where i am supposed to walk through the large hall and open the double doors at the end; i cant! Well; im in the main hall but i can walk through walls, stairs, doors, etc. Its as if the background texture is screwed up so that it doesnt change camera views when i go to a new area.... That was the biggest kick in the pants after spending a few hours beating a game ive waited at least 6-8 years to figure out how the story ends! All i wanted was that glorious "The End" screen! (NOT THE ONE WITH ME LIEING DEAD BY THE TREE! :bleh: ) |
I bought the 2nd and 3rd Alone in the dark game 1995 i think.
It was the best adventure game experience and i liked the last part the new nightmare too. What i hate to say is, i dint play the first one yet. So thats what i will do next. By the way what happened to the 5th part? It schould be out soon dont it? |

Sheesh.
Increase the cycles. The readme explains how. |
You know when you load the game up and it asks you to "select the items represented on page..XXX" does this mean anything?
well i searched around the internet for the game manual, and it only has 15 pages.. and none of them have items represented on them. I can play the game of course, because it lets you select any old items and then carrys on.. but i just wanted to know what book this page XXX is supposed to be in and if i can get a copy from anywhere and if it would actually do anything good if i chose the right items>?>? anybody know? |
Wow! This one deserves to be a classic up there with ZZT and Sonic!
The review was right on - for heaven's sake *don't* play this game in the dark (or worse, late at night like me!) unless you want to be in a cold sweat and have trouble sleeping. Heck, this game spooked me when I was playing with all the lights -on- at 3:00 PM! Storyline progressed very well as you read the various notes and books left strewn about, and a lot of the ways to get around traps were very logical if you thought about it. Like in the one hallway - cover the angry trapper with an -indian- blanket, then shoot the picture of the indian with what? An arrow! Scenery is great, animation is crude by today's standards but astonishing for stuff made back then. Not the programmers fault that their computers could only do so much. Finally the ending itself is worthy of being in a good Goosebumps book. All in all a great brain teaser and spook-tacular game! Dark-Star |
You're thinking of "Are You Afraid of the Dark"
|
I tried running the game with the Dos-Box under XP and it worked pretty well. Well, I tried to run the game under DOS in a win98 and it was working properly, until the end of the introduction, when the game just stopped and returned to DOS.
If someone could tell me what's going on and how I fix it, I would be very happy. |
could be a soundcard issue. Try setting up for no sound and give it a go. If it works, then try different sound settings.
|
hi.
I am running alone in the dark on dosbox. The sound and music works great but the framerate lags a bit. is there a way i can make it faster? |
Try increasing the cycles in DOSBox by pressing Ctrl f-12 (Ctrl f-11 to decrease) or set a higher cycles value in the DOSBox configuration file.
|
thnx!
it now works. this game is gd even by todays standads.well i am a fan old dos games |
now i have anouther problam.
When i run alone in the dark 2 with dosbox i get shown with an image of some garden and when i press enter to continue all i get is a black screen. is this supposed to happen |
Generally speaking (since I haven't tried this particular game)
Could be a soundcard issue. Let's see if it is: Make sure the game setup uses the same soundcard and parameters as in the DOSBox configuration. Default is Soundblastr 16, addresse 220, irq 7, dma 1 hma 5 If you still have problems: Set up the game for no sound whatsoever in the _games's_ setup, then try the game again. If you get it to run now, try various settings for sound. IMPORTANT: You will need to set up the soundcard according to your DOSBox configuration file. Change this first, then change the sound parameters in the game's setup. |
ok thnx i will try that
|
Did anyone manage to get the sound working? I cant get it to have any sound at all no matter what I choose.
|
Are you running it in DOSBox?
|
Hello
This issue has been already mentioned, there seems to be no answer however. Upon leaving the bedroom with fake book and movable grandfather clock you should go through the door to the library. I assume it is done with the key taken from the secret opening behind the clock. But no matter what I try the door remains locked. Back from when I played it for the first time I have vague memory that THAT was some sort of copy protection in the game (when you entered wrong symbols at the beginning the doors remained shut), but the game is supposed to be already cracked, so that should not be a problem. Am I doing something wrong? |
Hi all. I have Windows Vista and there doesnt seem to be any sound for this game. Can anyone help please?
And also - it says "select the items represented on page..XXX" at the start of the game. What is that about? |

May I ask why ths IMPORTNT.EXE shows Ren and Stimpy and some random game. WTF???
|
Hey, guys for any of you who has the sound working, why is it that this game doesn't have the original music score. I mean it doesn't even have the music when the guy or girl is actually reading the note with dialogue, which too isn't there. Is this game fully ripped of these things???
|
I first played this game when it was already kind of old. The graphics were primitive by the standards I was used to. Even so, it was still freaky. Actually, the old graphics almost make it more creepy when I think about it. Unintentional, of course, but it adds to the sense that you are involved in something strange.
One time when I was playing it at night - yes, I was alone in the dark - a precariously placed object (a book I think?) fell down at a random moment. Startled the heck out of me. |

Hi all,
Ive installed and am running AItD on my Pc. The trouble is that in the first room (after choosing the woman as my charcater) a monster comes through the window and attacks me. I've read the manual and it says for me to keep the spacebar pressed down while pressing the arrow butttons to attack the monster but nothing happens when i do that. i just die! Please help. Q |
Works fine, space + cursor keys.
Timing ... it's all in the timing. Or you need a new keyboard. BTW: If you find this AITD hard NEVER ever play Bioforge. |
I just found out how to work it - press the arrow key and THEN the spacebar. thanks anyways :D
|
you need to hold it, thats why=P
|
Quote:
Both works: first space and then the cursor keys or cursor keys and then space. Difference? -> When you first press space she will get a defensive ( or offensive if yo uwant) position, meaning she will stand still and raise her both hands on chest hight, ready to fight, in the direction she is facing. -> When you first hit the cursor and then the space bar she will first step forward, backward or turn and then get in defensive/offensive position. Small difference, but it can save a lot of health points. Depending the situation your character is in, you must choose the best method. Lets look at the wolf situation: Wolf in front of you and in reach, hit first space and then cursor, you knock him down easily without (or minimal) own damage. Wolf aside of you or just out of reach, first appropiate cursor to get him in reach and then space. Try it out, you'll see. Timing , it's all in the timing. |

Hello people. I'm having some problems.
So, I'm running Windows ME (with the real DOS deal), and when AITD DOES run, I need to configure it to my sound needs. But the thing is, the game seems to crash whenever I go to configuration, and I need to close the game. Before this, I could configure the sound settings to my preferences and the game would play-but there'd be two problems: one is there would be no soundtrack and only sound effects, and two is that whenever I got to a certain point, I'd get the blue screen of death. Welp, this means I need help. Any ideas, folks? Thanks. |
Had the same kind of probs when I was on ME with AITD.
Solved them by using a Dos6.22 bootdisk. (Had a FAT16 partition for those ol'games). If you only have FAT32 partitions you'll need a FAT32 compliant bootdisk. All depends on what soundcard or onboard soundchip you have . |
Quote:
|
Bootdisk + google <- click
If you really have no idea what I'm talking about, you probably better forget the bootdisk idea. It simply was something that was used a lot with ME/W2K to overcome problems with plain dos programs. That or 'dualboot'. See, ME has Dos onboard, but it ain't 100% compatible with the ol'MSdos. (Mainly memory management problems). |

So I've been in love with this game for years and years now. I think the atmosphere along with the story is perfect for playing in the dark hours and creeping myself out. I've never encountered much that can spook me, but this game has always been able to do just that.
My problem, though, is that I no longer have the manual for the game. After 11 moves across the country over the past 16 years are to blame. I think it ended up getting dumped with my old TANDY computer which I used to play it on years ago. Anyway, earlier in this thread there was mention of downloading the manual, but the option doesn't seem to show up for me in the "Extras" section for the game. Is the manual still available? |
Replacementdocs has it:

I played that game like 15 yrs ago ... ^_^ and completed it. The controls / keys are cursors, enter... what else? |
No wonder you can't see it, it isn't there anymore .....
Where is the manual link gone to? Can someone put it back please? You can get it also from replacementsdos: http://www.replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.288 |
voices?
I remember there being voices in this. But they are lacking now....
|
Probably in the CD version.
The one we have on Abandonia is the floppy version. |
Quote:
|
YEP! The CD-Version is has a much better atmosphere trough its used
professionell voices and an awesome soundtrack. You can even use the CD as a usual Audio-CD in every CD-Player. I think the best Release of these games is by far this one here: http://www.mobygames.com/game/alone-...he-trilogy-123 :woot::woot::woot::woot::woot::woot::woot: |
Having the voices made a good game great for me, when I first played AITD I was only relatively young and it freaked me out!
|
I donwload it fine,and is weird for me,whitout problems...oh my..I mist them :(
|
Quote:
I did find some places that might have the old CD version though. Were the graphics a bit better for the CD? or was it just the voice acting? |
I think that was just the voice acting.
|
Ok. SO i found a copy of the CD version on the net. It is in .bin and .cue format.
But when I install it, it says there isn't a disc when i have the image mounted in Daemon tools. |
Mount it directly in dosbox as D: pointing to the .cue
syntax: imgmount d "x:\path\name.cue" -t iso It's probably best to delete the old game folder and reinstall the game IN dosbox. |
Quote:
i have been using those commands...but cant seem to get it worked out. ah ok. So I got it mounted. Says "filenotfound INDAR2.CFG" |
Run the setup program to install the game first (usual names are INSTALL or SETUP).
|
Ok, i got it to work on my desktop. I have to disable my D drive, and mount the image under a virtual D drive.
Just like i remember it. But for some reason...I just cant get the character to run! double tapping. Walking then release and press again...spazzing out. None seem to work =/ Also. the voices are great =) |
Quote:
*sigh* |
Quote:
i guess that the image needs to be on the D: drive. My D: drive on here is a HD partition. |
Quote:
Important is to always mount the image as D, nothing to see which the drive it's stored on. Next: Install the game IN dosbox from D: on C: Really, drive letters mounted in dosbox have nothing to see with drive letters under Windows. |
Dosraider is correct.
I've been there - mounting the F:\dosgames directory as DOSBox' C: drive, mounting part of it as DOSBox' C drive, mounting my E: drive as DOSBox' D: drive and so on... |
about the bug in game..
some couple of pages before, someone was talking about throwing the oil-lamp bug, i am having the same here; put the talisman, lit the lamp, throw it and nothing happens. Can't tell how many times I tried. Well after some digging; I crossed a google group (usenet I suppose) about people talking about the issue at 1993!! Man they must be about 50 right now :hypno: They say no reason at all.. just a bug. Not a relief that I had; but at least I am not alone !!

hi-res
Hi for all!I just have two questions for all of you!As I saw the screenshots about the gameplay I saw hi-res pictures! I have the CD trilogy with hi-fi music and I can't set the resolution! Is there a hi-res version?Or just the pictures seem hi-res to me?And another question i've seen on youtube a trailer in french about the tree aitd. And they had gorgeous sound not just the music but the effects ,brand new!Is there a facelifted version of the game? there is the link to the commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhHwHNSQTac
Thanx for your help!! |
Check your sound setup.
...and read the 'readme' on your CD. |
I tried, and I mean, I REALLY tried...but I just can't look in these horrible quasi 3D graphics, nice 2D will always be better than horrible 3D.
As for the famous fear factor of Alone in the Dark series, I'll look it up in Alone in the Dark 4. |
Well, the game is 90% 2D :p it's just you and the enemies and a few items that are 3D. It would never have worked in 2D. Remember, when this game was made, there was no other 3D games like this. It inspired Resident Evil - oh heck, I'll just say it: Resident Evil ripped off Alone In The Dark completely.
|
Thanx
Hi! Thanx! I just thoght there is a 1024x768 or something version of the game, maybe it's just my eyes :)! And what about the cool sound effects?did all of you heard those screams and gunshots etc.? So the black boxed trilogy is only about new music?nothing more extra? Do you remember the original c&c? low-res, simple icons in the game, etc.? I have a "win95" version 1024x768,cool icons and more! that's why I thought there is a newer AITD!

I find it odd that so many of my fellow gamers think you need games with insane polygon counts, 3D sound, and all sorts of fancy FX to have a title that will really scare you. As if total realism were all that mattered!
AITD scared the living daylights out of me: -In the very first room. (Hey, what's at the window?!) -When walking down the hallway with the enchanted pictures. -While perusing the library. (THAT ain't no librarian...!) -In the room with the fireplace and ghost in a chair. I learned the hard way that the funny see-through people Should Not Be Disturbed. Had to stop playing after the resulting chase, I was so badly frightened. -After opening the front door too soon. (what the heck was that anyhow?!) And those are just some of the highlights! AITD will always be one of my favorite horror games for the atmosphere and logic puzzles; keeping you looking over your shoulder for yet another Horrible Thing while trying to figure out how to escape a mansion infested with all kinds of lethal traps. |
The voice overs on the talkie really freaked me out.
|
I'm new to this world of entertainment, and i downloaded this gaem... now im completley confused... im running on windows vista, but i dont know what to open or anything to get started. please help
|
wait, i figured out how to open it but, two problems:
-1, does it have to be in french? -and 2, when i click "jeu", it says "This system does not support fullscreen mode. Choose ""close"" to terminate the application." and the only option is to click close, and thus, obviously, close the program. |

When I died the first time, I was all like "Wait, is he REALLY doing that?!?!" I've yet to get past the first few rooms XD EDIT: Aw man, I love the fact that some of the manual is french, talking about "louer le CD" and all that XD |
I love AITD (the original)
 one of the best PC games ever.
|
This is the first survival-horror game I've ever finished and also the best one I've ever played! Okay so the controls are cumbersome and the camera angles are annoying (although I suspect this was done on purpose to add a degree of difficulty to the game,) but it's definately worth a download. I would recommend playing it with a walkthrough though, some of the puzzles are really abstract; like the indian cover/painting/bow and arrow one. Contrary to popular opinion, YOU CAN KILL THE GHOSTS IN THE BALLROOM! (when you do they turn into lght brown smoke instead of coloured disks, and vanish. I'll tell you how to do it if anyone's interested...

(UPDATE) LOL... The ghosts always die when you get the key and exit the ballroom, the thing with the grammaphone was strange though. Also you can kill the library monster just by blocking with the correct dagger. |

|
So i've been playing the game, a fair way through and had to stop. We all gotta eat some time right?! I went back to load the saved game and it loads my exact position (in the smoking room) but as soon as I hit any of the controls it freezes me out. What do I do?!
|
Quote:
I haven't played the floppy version that AB has but if you have another save you might want to rethink your strategy when entering that room if you haven't taken care of the cigar. You don't live long in there if you don't. Could be that the death scene is locking the game up and avoiding that unfortunate event could allow you to progress. |

problems getting game to start
hello
I'm having some problems getting the alone in the dark game to work properly. I've managed to get dos box installed thanks to the tutorial thread and have got other games to work so I think it's all installed correctly. I have extracted the AITD game to the folder c:\oldgames\AITD as suggested by the dosbox tutorial guide. I have read the readme file in the main AITD folder and it says that if your dosbox isn't installed in C:\dos then you need to chane some settings - target and something else I can't remember. My dosbox is installed at C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe. It also says to change the indark2.cfg file if your game is installed anywhere else from c:\aitd - like I said before mine is installed in an oldgames folder. If I try to run the .exe file I get a message as follows: error: no CD found No cd rom driver I have tried to change the things it says but I can't get it to work. any ideas? thanks in advance |
I don't remember having to play around with this game at all to get it to work. Redownload the game, delete the old version, place the new one in C:\oldgames\aitd. Start Dosbox.
Mount c c:\oldgames C:\ Cd aitd alone Let us know if that works. |
still nothing.
I have deleted the old directory and reinstalled it so that the game is saved in the c:\oldgames\aitd directory (where it was before). according to the dosbox tutorial guide I have already modified the conf file so that the autoexec bit reads as follows: mount c: c:\oldgames c: c:\nc\nc.exe when in that norton commander thing, if I try to run the indark.exe file by clicking on it I get the "no cd driver" error I mentioned before. |
Okay I am turning this one over to a more experienced member....this rip version doesn't want to work on my computer either. And I am a little too busy today to play around with it.
Try moving the AITD to your C:\ directroy. (Should look like C:\AITD) and running the shortcut, don't try and mount it with your Dosbox. |
In the subfolder \aitd\cd\ there is a fake CD image, you must mount it with imgmount in dosbox as D:
If you have the AITD folder in c:\oldgames\ your mount lines become: mount c c:\oldgames imgmount d c:\oldgames\aitd\cd\alone1.cue -t iso c: cd aitd cd indark indark Forget N.Commander for now. Also forget that dosbox link in the archive, it's a worthless method. You can add all those mount lines under [autoexec] if you want or put them in a batch file. http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/1828/aitd01.th.png http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/3719/aitd02.th.png Uploaded with ImageShack.us Quote:
|
I don't know why we have this on site....the method for running it no longer works without being played with. While it's nice that it has the voice overs and that from the CD if people really want that they can get it from the ISO cellar. The version I have lacks music and voice overs but still has sound effects....and it is much easier to run. It's also only around 6mb rather then 80mb. Just my thoughts really.
|
ok I'll give that a go when I get home tonight. I'll let you know how I get on.
|
There are specific instructions at the bottom of the review. You need to unarchive it in your REAL C:\ directory, and run the game using the DOSBox shorcut (by double-clicking it)...
|
I did all that TA and it failed to work. As I said its just my thoughts. To me it's a complicated way of getting it work, when a much easier way could be made.
|
Quote:
The dosbox shortcut expects dosbox to be in C:\DOS\DOSBox-0.74\ , by now you should know that dosbox needs to be in \program files\ or \program files(x86)\ to work correctly on a modern OS, and the user (game) files in \user\your name\folder\ More: a worthless method because when dosbox will update to 0.75 or whatever that dosbox shortcut won't work even on an older OS with an updated dosbox. It's a basicly wrong method, nothing you say can change that fact. |

CD MUSIC!!!
Quote:
I figured out how to get the CD music to work from the primary download. The only "bad" thing is the "waste of disc space". Shouldn't be a problem on todays systems... ;) The size of the game increases to around 327MB. In D-Fend Reloaded you got a VrtualHD folder. I copied the game to .\VirtualHD\GAMES\ALONITD1\ This means, that I had to edit the "INDARK2.CFG" with notepad and put the path "\GAMES\ALONITD1" into it. I copied the \CD folder into the \ALONITD1 folder. Now here comes the trick: I converted the .MP3s located in the \music folder to .WAV files and copied them into the \CD folder overwriting everything! To convert the files to .WAV you can use the "Disk Writer" plugin in WinAMP or the "WAV Writer" in the output setting of XM-Play. It's just that easy! After all that I configured the game in D-Fend and mounted the .CUE file as as drive D:. Started the game and it works with the "high quality"-CD-Music! YAAAY! :D PS: I've read the first 12 pages of this thread and nobody mentioned this. Sorry, if it was already known to do it! ;) |
Quote:
Does anyone know of a free command-line file conversion utility that can do an mp3 to wav conversion? |

Also when I do the above method, only the first song plays in the first half of the intro, after that there is no music.

So Is it possible to get a cue file with the right timings?
|
If you sign up for the website there is a forum called The ISO Cellar (You have to sign up to see it) that has Alone in the Dark 1,2 and 3 in it for download. Mounting those image files and using Dosbox you can play the game with full music and sound.
|
The Alone in the Dark trilogy is available from GOG.com, so we'll need to disable the download links.
|
Loved this game so much, but never finished it...
Though I finished second and third installment. |
one of the most entertaining games I ever played loved it :) !!!!!!!!!!
|
Very entertaining, definitely... if you're patient with it :)
The control scheme is more than a bit awkward, but it seemed to work enough to inspire a few sequels and the Resident Evil series (which also follows very much the same sort of control scheme). A very innovative game, genre bending. |
Just replayed it again, and:
- realised the two characters are supposed to be two difficulty levels. But come on, the only thing they differ is their background story! (The woman has more clues, and looks more aweful.) - how does the protagonist know what human flesh tastes? - what'd happen if I did not remove the chock from the barrels in the cellar? Would they be removed and the opening be free, or I got eternally stuck? |
I remember that I was tense and anxious playing this game for the first time at the time because I did not know when and where I would be surprised by the monsters.
One of the scenes I was distressed was in the library, but I managed to find the dagger and eliminated the monster. One of the curious facts was the quiet ghosts. Once you began to attack them, they became a strange shape that spun and were indestructible. It was best to leave them alone. I remember I played the new Alone in the Dark, but I still find this game more “scary”. |
