Kosta 01-05-2006 09:42 PM

Hi everyone!

I am proud to announce that we have a new shoutbox in place! This one will only allow registered members to post, and under their own names as well. This should prevent posting under false names and flaming / spamming we encountered in the past. This is the first version, so there is still room for improvement. That is why I would like to hear your initial thoughts and suggestions on what you think would be a welcome addition to it!

Have fun :ok:

Tulac 01-05-2006 09:44 PM

It's great, what it misses is the time of the post, though...

And the capitalization thing :P

Dino 01-05-2006 09:48 PM

Looks great! Only thing I miss is the archive...

Reup 01-05-2006 10:42 PM

Indeed, no archive. And sometimes the posts seem to dissappear

Kosta 01-05-2006 11:00 PM

Fixed the capitalization... will work on the archive tomorrow. As for the dissapearing, call it a one time glitch :P

EDIT: And the "archive" works now, you can use the next & previous buttons

moogle 01-05-2006 11:48 PM

YAY!

Shrek 02-05-2006 12:13 AM

very cool :kosta:

can I suggest some smileys? (I don't know if they are easy to implement so, don't hurt me much :tomato: )

number 1: http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/853/prayer7tk.gif
number 2: http://img436.imageshack.us/img436/5126/nerd3cg.gif
number 3: http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/4707/hitme5wq.gif

Kosta 02-05-2006 12:17 AM

Sorry but those would take up the entire shoutbox... :D They need to be miniature, I've already added smileys for all needs so suggestions in that area are closed :bleh:

a1s 02-05-2006 12:35 AM

we don't seem to have an angry smiley (like so:http://67.15.5.220/5548/161/emo/cussing.gif or so: http://67.15.5.220/5548/161/emo/Pissed.gif) and while I'm not sure we need one we don't have an evil simley (like so:http://67.15.5.220/5548/161/emo/FIREdevil.gif)

we allso have versions of those on our board ( :ranting: and  ) which fit the frames better, but than you would think I didn't do my homework

edit: I see you've added the evil one. but the angry one is more important don't you think? :sneaky:

Kosta 02-05-2006 12:39 AM

Well, since everyone loves each other so much on this board, I'm sure there won't be a need for angry smilies :bleh:
But since you insist, I'll find one just for you... :max:

Hm, its not in that list from which I got the others... so I guess its up to you to find one :D

EDIT: And please note it has to be exactly 15x15px... I want to keep things tidy

JimmyJ 02-05-2006 12:58 AM

One thing it needs would be a few more smilys :)

Data 02-05-2006 06:30 AM

changed: Vermulen => Vermeulen

Glad to see it in place. It looks quite a lot like the old one from the looks that is.

Abi79 02-05-2006 10:53 AM

Uh, is it just me or I could copy and paste a full review in it? You should add a limit of characters you can write to avoid someone posting: Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy y
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy y
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy y
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy y
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy y
yyyyyyyyyyyy....

Dino 02-05-2006 11:34 AM

There's 255 character limit, if I'm not mistaken. At least that's what Kosta said...

Reup 02-05-2006 12:06 PM

Maybe you could apply a little style-sheet to the 'Next' and 'Previous' buttons, so they look nicer? They're quite large now...

Kosta 02-05-2006 12:10 PM

Yup, that's next on the list... will make that nicer and also allow multiple smiley associations by the end of the day...

SupSuper 02-05-2006 02:29 PM

Evil smiley doesn't work. It shows up as > :)

Maikel 02-05-2006 02:48 PM

that's because we're one happy family!!!

is it somehow connected with maximal character capacity of a file name in the windows? =P

It's the maximum size of MySQL's varchar column type.

Danny252 02-05-2006 05:44 PM

I claim to be the first person to spam the whole front page of the spambox twice and sing the hotdog song on it! I also claim to be the first person to piss Kosta off by spamming in it. Yay!

here is one I've thrown together during the evnening.
BTW, can a smiley be a little wider than 15 pix (but still the same hight)? this one isn't really to scale with the other ones...

Is that the reason your MySQL server reported "too many connections" and "going offline" several times while trying to use the forum in the last 4-6 hours? :D

The Fifth Horseman 26-05-2006 12:30 PM

Will Shoutbox be back after our recent upgrade?

Bobbin Threadbare 03-06-2006 10:24 AM

You know how there's the little +/- to hide different forums on the main board? You could make a hide button to hide the shoutbox...

Kosta 03-06-2006 11:27 AM

Well, you can hide the whole statistics window and with it the shoutbox will dissapear as well. What I could do is, if you don't like the shoutbox, place an option not to display it in your control panel

IHateSeph 03-06-2006 03:27 PM

I am all for keeping spam and stupid links off these forums, but I am gonna miss posting under various hilarious gimmick names, which spawned many "WTF" moments. Those were priceless.

Tom Henrik 04-06-2006 07:11 PM

Yes. Priceless - and a source for many bans in the past.

IHateSeph 05-06-2006 07:57 AM

I didn't get banned, cause I did it right.

And with moderation.

Plus how can you possibly ban the Poopmonster, you're inhuman.

Bobbin Threadbare 08-06-2006 11:52 AM

Also, is it possible to ban someone from using the shoutbox?

Kosta 08-06-2006 01:57 PM

It is, the shoutbox restrictions are separate from the forum ones :sneaky:

guesst 10-06-2006 05:39 AM

I'm not experienced with shoutbox and all. Is it possible to break it away from that little corner it's stuck at into a seperate window? Not that it matters. It's not something I've quite got the hang of.

Tulac 10-06-2006 07:29 AM

In firefox it goes like this: right click on the shoutbox -> this frame -> open this frame in new window/tab

Ah, well, for those of me who are happy with Avant Browser I guess there's no option for that. Ah well.

Tulac 10-06-2006 02:30 PM

You can always try right clicking on the shoutbox and see what you can do :P

This one has been coded by Kosta himself.

southwolf 11-06-2006 08:43 PM

Still like to know how to get one or could this Kosta tell me how to get one.

TheVoid 11-06-2006 09:39 PM

You could as well look for one by yourself. I searched with Google "How to get a shoutbox" and this site was the first result: http://www.myshoutbox.com/ .
If you feel like coding your own one, I guess this could be of some help: http://www.natbat.co.uk/shoutbox.php

southwolf 11-06-2006 09:43 PM

Got it.

thanks.

Awesome. Very evil.

Shrek 14-06-2006 09:04 AM

Oh, crap... is the shoutbox working for you guys?
Because it's not working for me.... and yesterday I had a similar problem at Reload.

To be more specific, the button for sending message, and the box where the messages are written and the "messages archive" link are gone, so I can't write a thing.

However I noticed Tulac wrote something there "3 minutes and 55 seconds ago"

Tulac 14-06-2006 09:12 AM

Works for me, does it work after you refresh the page?

Nope... I even tried to "log out" and "log in" again... it remains the same... oh, never mind, who needs the shoutbox anyway ^_^

Abi79 14-06-2006 09:56 AM

It works for me also. Shrek, maybe you should delete cookies, empty the cache and then try again. If you still will not be able to see the buttons, then go and get Firefox. If you are already using it...then you are lying. Nothing can go wrong with FF. Nothing! :P Praise Firefox :kosta:

Icewolf 14-06-2006 10:00 AM

I recently experienced problems with it.

"Xajax error". Couldn't do anything with it. Just for info...

Same here. I'm using FF on a borrowed computer and the shoutbox doesn't work. Same thing happened on another borrowed computer some days back. On my own pc it's fine. Log-out and log in doesn't help.

Edit: Same thing om yet another computer. I don't think Flash enters into it.

guesst 13-07-2006 02:25 PM

That same thing happens on the school computer for me, but it's fine when I go home. The school computers also don't have flash, so I just assumed it was related.

hotty_green 20-07-2006 10:49 PM

i've been expirencing problems with the shoutout box. all morning it wont let me type anything, because the box that would normally display the emoticons and the white box to write in is... missing! can someone fix this plz! :wallbash:

Danny252 21-07-2006 08:20 PM

Buttons are missing here, too.

guesst 21-07-2006 10:13 PM

They're fine here.

Again, I think it's related to javascript limitations on your system, but I can't be sure.

Hamster of Doom 21-07-2006 11:42 PM

Now that´s strange.
I visited the forum with Firefox and I had no problems till this evening/night (meaning that I saw the buttons of the sb). I kept the page open in the background. After some time I refreshed the page with the forum and the buttons were gone. Refreshing the page did not bring the buttons back. I´ve also cleared the cache, deleted the cookies and opened the page again, but the result was the same: I can see, what others have written, but the field with the smilies, the buttons, archive etc. is missing.

When I view the forum with IE, the shoutbox (with the buttons) ist there and everything is fine.

melthas 22-07-2006 12:28 PM

Yesterday it was all fine with IE. Today I can see what's written before but I can't see the buttons and the message box. Refreshed the page many times, cleared the cache, it doesn't work...

_r.u.s.s. 22-07-2006 07:47 PM

:kosta:

_r.u.s.s. 19-08-2006 04:16 PM

sorry for double posting but i found another error

shoutbox is acting pretty wierd about writing
Quote:

"something-something-something"[/b]
notice there are quotes^

once it was when i seen "dj-tiesto-fan" logged and wanted to say his name in quotes it gave me this wierd error
when i typed "dj-tiesto-fan" it gave me
Quote:

"dj-tiesto-fan & quot ;[/b]
(no spaces)

BUT when you type something else like "a-b-c" it writes it in right way

or also "something-something-something" is written in right way too

now, when you type "-randomcrap-" it writes also "-randomcrap- & quot ;

when you type "-something-" it writes it in right way

there are many more wierd combinations with it, like when you type "-1234567890-" it gives you "-1234567890-"; (see there s an ; in it) BUT without & quot

oh and the most wierd thing is that everything is fine in archive

EDIT: now tulac shown me its not about "--", its just about ""
EDIT2: i just found that it's in letter-count so "dj-tiesto-fan" is wrong becouse when you type anything made of 13 letters in quotes it will give you &quot ; in the end

Abi79 29-08-2006 07:57 AM

If someone else didn't find out this thing before me, then it's good. :P

I've noticed that when you log in on the forum, but do not select the Remember me option, you cannot write on the shoutbox. This problem can easily be solved by logging in with the Remember me option checked.

The Fifth Horseman 31-08-2006 01:38 PM

The SB doesn't initialize now... what's wrong with it?

Romano 31-08-2006 01:59 PM

Try "refresh"

win98 08-09-2006 06:45 PM

Ivge been having a few probelms to works now though.
