If you are using Dosbox, you should edit the dosbox.conf file with the notepad and find a place where it says "ems=false" and change it to "ems=true", without the quotes. This should fix the problem. If you are using Win XP, click w/ the right button over uw.exe and change it's properties. Change the EMS memory for a suitable number, more than 500Kb is good, but you must have 480Kb free. If you are using pure Dos, you should have a program that comes with it called QEMM.SYS or EMM386.SYS. To use them you should add a line at the CONFIG.SYS file. To use these, you must have HIMEM.SYS too. Go to your config.sys and add the following lines: DEVICE=<Path>HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=<Path>EMM386.SYS 480 PAth is where the file is. 480 is how much memory you will allocate. You should allocate more. (taken from the manual). Hope you have fun with this gorgeous piece of game. Farewell |
A few people touched on the greatness of this game already, but I just wanted to reiterate it.
This game is a masterpiece. It was/is a terrific 3d engine before there were any other games even close to what these development team created. This game was miles ahead of everyone at the time of it's release. I played through it 3x at different points in my life --- awesome, awesome game! I am actually disappointed by the user ranking as this was the best ultima game out of the entire series (with props to ultima 4, 7, underworld 2) |

Yes, this game is awesome. When I first started to play it, I was surprised at the complex graphics and game system it has, comparing to Wizardy VII - Crusaders of the Dark Savant that I played before through. Ultima Underword is so much more advanced that Wizardry VII, heck it's even comparable to Doom II (this one had better level design than first Doom) and this in the same year of releasing as Wizardry VII - 1992. Origin was always the top nose back then at the breakthrough ideas...

Random tip:
What makes this game special even nowadays is the interation with information inside the game. This means that you get a (word), for example at the beginning, and then you must use it with someone you have no idea who is. To not forget it and where you got it, make a note on the map with a number, like 1, then at the side, write "1. Where I got (word)" and then, you can either use a small paper to write the (word) down or write it in the 9th page of your automap. It feels great to remember your experiences just by looking at a page with your notes... It makes you want to play the game once more, but to get the experience of playing it without knowing things is unique... Don't spoil it reading walkthroughs just because you can't open a door. |
My method of fighting:
This method was developed after a short time dealing with the beasts in the abyss and is pretty effective. Normally you will get out unharmed and very happy :) (Note: This supposes you use melee weapons and it is not very effective against monsters using strong missile weapons/spells) 1. Spot the enemy. When it's more than one, concentrate on one, don't be brave, or foolish. 2. Keep your distance, then load you attack. When the power gem is bright green, rush towards the enemy and attack. 3. Don't stay near him! You can either continue running to escape his attacks or walk backwards being out of range of his weapon. You can turn and run too. 4. Spot the enemy again and prepare your strike. Charge against him and strike, then avoid his attacks. Repeat this until it is dead. It takes some time to master but you can kill the fiercest monster easily (it may take some time, this is the most irritating factor that unfocus you). The gargoyle in the top of the screen shows your opponent's life. Bright green is good health, yellow means it is hurt and red means seriously injured. You can say this is 'Hit and Run' but I prefer to call it 'Fight for life'. |
Hey folks!
I've read about some inventory problems occuring in the disk version of the game so decided to patch the game. After i did so, i started getting "Underworld internal error. Problems in object list" error whenever i split some certain stacks in my inventory or loading the game. Is it the patch??? I mean have everyone used THIS version, i mean the abandonia distributed version, without the need of any patches and without any problems till the end? If so, i shall not patch and play it all the way through. Considering the value of my time, I wanted to consult you folks... Thanks |
