This game for some reason freezes whenever I try to go to sleep using the bedroll. I've tried using both dosbox and the winXP patch but they're no use. Anyone got any tips?

:Brain: This is the very game that got me into the Ultima series. It's nothing less than a sparkling gem! Even today (forget about those photo realistic, 'real physics' and no game play) This is THE game of all times. I used to run it on a win98se machine, but for some reason I couldn't levitate or swim north and west (I think it was). Now I've got me an XP machine and dos-box (a brilliant piece of sw which I'm beginning to learn). I started the game and it had full sound/music, something I had trouble getting in win98. I hope that I can go swiming and flying about like any other decent human being now.

BTW and OT: Although Ultima IX had some moments, that big bug doesn't come close to this one and VIII. I'm currently trying to get down to playing VII (one I have never played before). Maybe if I tore down the calendar and took out the batteries of my watch and clock...

well the bug you mentioned is very strange. it is however made a bit strange the swimming part i mean. you will need to press capslock to do it and then turn it off when you are on dry land.

as for the WIN 98 - why did you run it in WIN? tghe game was ment for dos. and if you had win 98 all oyu would have to do is either make a propper shortcut or even better make a bootdisk. it would run very well there. i had win95 on one and have win 98 on the other computer and both ran the ultima fine. no problems with sound at all. eventhought one of the computers has a newer processor.

Well, I did run it in pure dos, but I found that I could also get the same result in win. Anyway, the sound issue and the Northwest bug appeared during dos-sessions as well. Don't know why or anything, and now that I've got dos-box, I just want to forget that awful OS that 98 was.

Edit: ABOUT THE NORTHWEST BUG: I played one of my 'bugged' savegames on a slower computer, and the bug apparently had gone(!?). Had a similar experience with Daggerfall. Seems that certain old games just don't like being rushed. I don't know...

This is a great game I have played it through (and also UUW2) when I was younger.
It is also the first game I've ever bought from my own money!
And I bought it together with my first CD-ROM drive, so that makes a lot of premieres together :)

Cooking stew for rotworm, casting levitation spells, whacking doors endlessly until they break up.. so cool.

you mean you have just one file in the folder?

otherwise (if you have many files), that might be it. just sound setup. after that you should run UW.exe or something like that and hopefully it works.

My poor axe wielding druid woman is stuck trying to get the stupid Blade part for the Sword of Justice. I've tried 'grabbing' all the vine covered walls in the most SE corridor which leads to downstairs, the corridor and rooms of the Thieves Storerooms, and almost all the walls in every room around the moat I know I need to drain to gain access to the Blade. What am I overlooking? I'm dying of frustration here, thanks!

If it isn't late already, the place where you find a switch to drain the water on the southeast part of lv3 is very near the area really. There should be a magic light mace near the water that will be lowered. Now, on the northern wall there should be a place with vines growing on the wall, and isolated (i think), now use the see button several times and you will take the vines out and this will reveal a door and inside, the lever will be, ok? :ok:

I got a problem, I got the picture of tom and went back to level 5 to give it to judy but she dont seem to be in the big room with the lava anymore? Has she liek wandered off somewhere or has something gone wrong with the game?

Also wheres the secret room on level 4 with the gold plate in it? I got my search skill up quite hi and clicked on just about every wall but I cant find it.

Although that shouldn't happen normally and never did whenever I played the game, Judy might have fallen off into lava, which brought an end to her "existence". That means you would need to load a game before she did (you kept more than one savegame, didn't you?) and pray that you don't need to re-start the game from beginning.
