Well, once you have finished the basic secondary school here and begin to study in any kind of a college, the rules become strict. If you skip a lesson you got to bring a medical statement or the absence will be noted as without valid excuse. If you skip more than around 24 lessons in a month without an excuse, you get expelled without any further thought.
Also the skipped, unexcused lessons affect the notes for each responsible subject for an entire term, so unless one is really determined to study something and finish it, it's adviseable to consider to spend the time in a more meaningful way. It's funny how many people go to a college without spending a thought about what they actually want there...
[/b]
Here it's more or less just the other way around. In elementary school almost nobody skips classes, later in secondary school they shouldn't and should always bring written reasons (usually from the parents - but sometimes it has to be from a doctor) as to why they were absent.
But once you start studying at the faculty you don't even have to attend. The lectures are of an open type (anyone can attend) but attendency is not obligatory. I remember some subjects I had to take but were never really there (mostly also because I had two lessons at about the same time ex: National History 11:00 - 12:30, General didactics 11:30 - 14:00). So I couldn't even if I wanted to attend both. I never went to general didactics (there simply wasn't anything I could learn there).

Anyway... back to the original question, if I had any similar experiance... well, from the other side. I'm a professor and at the moment I teach at a secondary school (15+ year olds) and some had to be thrown out of school. There was this guy who was apsent 42 days out of the first 62 days of school, because he was hooked on the gaming machines at the bus station (he came to town with the local bus) and never made it to school. The parents were unreachable and didn't even know he wasn't at school. He only enrolled to get teh state stipendium anyway (because both his parents were unemployed). He spent it all on those poker and blackjack machines there. SAD.

And another guy we had to throw out - because he only came to school to sell marihuana. He grew his own somewhere and as long as he had the supply he attended school and sold it, as soon he ran out he would skip classes. The problem was proving it to him (even though there were many witnesses to it among the other kids at school).

Wow! I'd never guess ^_^ Himmler? Do you now anything about metal diseases?

Ok, back on track: It is sad when kids drop out of school for whatever reason. They don't understand I guess, but TONS of chances and opportunities disappear when they do. And given that that is what life is about; getting opportunities, it's just sad.
