P.S. Wooo! 200 posts!

Mhuahaha, nice to know I'm not the only one who played that tactic. It has just one weakness: Tenochtitlan was destroyed by barbarians several times and due to that I lost the game :)

For Sale?

Does anyone know where I can buy this game, the computer I had this on broke, and we're having trouble recovering the disk.

Best game for years, the only drawback is the technology doesnt gets after todays tech. It would be nice to have the possibility to get Real future technology.

For what my memory's worth: Future Tech, in all Civ games, are there as bonus points. Since the tech tree, in theory, could be infinite, there is a cap, a point where you run out of new "cool stuff to discover". Can't have infinity running riot in a limited space such as on a hdd or cd now, can we :) What's more irritating is the fact that after you have made every city improvement and wonder, and you have built all the units you want, you need to continuously create units. It was fixed in Civ 2 where you'll get money instead of costly units.

Other than that: Civ has it's limitations but it's still one awesome game!

When you've built everything that you ever want to build, it's time to start using the excess to build Caravans...

Having a massive military isn't as good as having 200 Caravans creating wealth every turn, IMO.
The only problem is, you have to AutoGo them all and deal with the logistics of that...

Mind - if you get to that point, and you haven't already won by Spaceship or Conquest, then you're playing on a difficulty that's too easy!

i like the review in the end (when you finish) and how the game makes a txt file where it puts all important achievements form the review.

oh and i recently installed latest patch on Civ3 and there too the weak units of oldancient times can win over a tank (even over modern armour). you need to put them in a city though and probably if they have some other bonues. sucks IMO. :sucks:

Well, Spearmen have a defense rating of 2. The first tank you can build have an offensive capability of 16 (from memory).

The Spearman get a bonus of 50% from being fortified. Another bonus from being fortified in a city. Another 100% bonus if there is a city defense inside. Another 2 defense bonus if there is a radio tower in range... Another bonus if you try to attack a unit which is sitting on the other side of a river (etc)... And, from experience, Spearmen also have a defensive bonus against fast units.

So, if you add all this together... Your defense 2 unit end up with a huge defensive number. And, again from experience, in Civ III when you attack with anything less than at least twice the number the defensive unit have then every battle is a jeopardy...

What really plagued all Civ games up to now is the incredibly dumb RNDs. There is nothing more frustrating than to see a tank fight a musketman, get the defensive unit down to one health and then lose all its HP in one go. That's why I love armies: they simply can't lose.

Also, with any game that uses %'s to calculate results - there's always a slim chance, as there always is 0% being uncalculable by divisions, that the attackers will lose totally.
These miniscule opportunities seem to be taken quite a lot by computers, I've noticed...

You can't go wrong with nukes, though. :D
Just make sure you trash the world *after* you've gotten your people to Alpha Centurai!

I can't get this game to start. I am using DOSbox but every .exe I run from the download file just leads to a dead end.

the main .exe just gives me a message about Mini Extract Utility Version 2.04c

The install exe takes me to an install screen but I cant get it to work either.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.

Luchsen 31-10-2009 07:09 PM

There is no MAIN.EXE and no INSTALL.EXE, but a CIV.EXE. :oh:
