i have a pet peeve about messing with game art as well.
in emulators some people have added transparency tables to systems that NEVER supported transparency.. so thats changing the original artwork. not cool. i gather that the people that made the artwork generally dont like it either.

THAT said. making a fan based game thats a. FREE and b. clearly different to the original, using ripped sprites is a still bit.. sketchy.. but its not as offensive, if you ask me.
