oh, that happens when theres incompatible refresh rate, not resolution. you can always 1. run the game windowed (alt-enter) or 2. click "start->run" type in dxdiag. chose "more help" tab, there should be button "override direct draw's refresh rate" set refresh rate value compatible with your monitor (try 60 or 85 or so)

The first two WCs don't support Windowed modes and changing the refresh rate does nothing. =/
