Moo2 is the best 4x game ever developed... It has a balance between micro and macromanagement, unlike SEV. SEV is too micro focused. You have to attach each crew quarter to your ships, its ridiculous, the next thing will be that you have to have to design the head :D. Another big problem of SEV is the dumbness of the AI.

GC2 is damn close to be a spiritual successor of MOO2, if the expansion Dark Avatar delivers what Stardock advertises, it will be the new king of genre. The game has the same balance like MOO2 and AI is phenomenal, at times you will think its a human player, and it does not cheat!. The only problem with it is that it adapts to slowly to your weapons. Maybe DA will solve this.

GC2 sure does pwn! Unfortunately it's running a little slow on my system so I'm going to hold off it until I get my new computer. I never thought I'd see the day when a FPS runs smoother than a TBS...

Has to be Master of Orion; I've spent many hours playing this game

Master of Orion is one of three games that I went to some trouble to buy, after playing with a pirated copy (the other two being the first two XCOM games). It is the game that I always return to. The only game that I play more than Master of Orion is minesweeper, but only because it takes less time.

Sword of the Stars is awesome! :D

I've seen some screenies from it and it certainly looks good, but how does it compare to other 4X:es in terms of depth, variety, AI etc.?

According to IGN it's a little too combat inviting...

Which is exactly what makes it so great! Besides it feels much more like your an Emperor and Admiral than other 4x's with less micromanagement. You make the general decisions for your empire like leaders in the real world do, and thus get to focus on your empire more as a whole. Instead of having to micromanage bunchloads of planets, making you feel like you've been appointed to mayor in too many cities. :P

I've played four 4X games. Master of Orion 2, Ascendancy, Pax Imperia, and Space Empires 4.

Of all those, Ascendancy is by far my favorite. Ascendancy is my favorite game of all time, it always has been and it always will be. I still play it to this day. In my opinion, it got everything right except AI which was mediocre. The game is just endlessly entertaining, and it focuses more on grand strategy with 30 or 40 solar systems, which I think it great. I though Master of Orion 2 was great fun as well, but it just couldn't touch Ascendancy for me. If anyone is looking for another 4X game to try out, I highly recommend this one.

GalCiv 2 is great, when you have the updates.

I even bought it :P

Isn't Terminus kind of a space fighter sim? Just from reading about it, it sounds like Wing Commander or Freespace, except with true frictionless Netwonian physics in space. Sounds cool though, I may have to check it out.

Alpha Centauri, if that counts, is a definite favourite.
