I see the point, however I do not like the idea of kavind ED2K links on Abandonia. Still, P2P seems a valid alternative for spreading those really BIG abandoned games around. I mean, 200 MB+ |

That's basically what everyone else does - check mobygames for the publishers and so on then compare them with the ESA list (googling them if they're obscure ones that might have been bought out since), check common sites on which they might be sold (cdaccess et al.) then google something like "game xxx new to buy" and similar and look for links - nobody here's a walking encyclopaedia of game abandonment (or deciding arbitrarily) with the possible exception of Tom There's other ways to get VIP status - I got mine for the Grammar corrections we're still working on (and a review for a now-protected game - Populous 2 if you're interested) and lots of people have gotten them for translating and general helpfulness. But this is getting a long way off topic. |

well, it should only be a proposal... i still think, it's good. even wikipedia is spread via ed2k-links. after all it's only a means of distribution, not a something criminal in the first place... and of course i thought of it only as an add-on to the existing links, not to exchange it! adding BTs and/or ed2k-links won't hurt anyone, after all the files are for free anyway, only thing that happens would be, that ppl could get the files from each other, not only from your server(s). but as long as you don't agree i will keep on reducing your bandwidth and raising your traffic happily and: i probably will never get to be VIP, for i only can provide foreign language versions of existing releases or things that are forbidden (how can i find out, if something is abandonned?! is it sufficiend to search the company's website, or search all 23billion hits on a google search?) ... you're too good... |

The way I see it, we have this great site that Kosta and others have set up, and our current system works pretty well. Why make the waters choppy just to save a few minutes of download time? Is it really worth the risk of abandonia? If you really want bigger games, contribute to the site and try to obtain a VIP membership. Otherwise, deal with some extra download time. I apologize if the above sounded rude in anyway, it was not my intention, I promise  |

http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?s...2&hl=bittorrent I have nothing whatsoever against the idea of using Bittorrents and/or ed2k as long as they are provided as an alternative way and not as the only way of downloading the games. That being said, I have to agree that it is rather risky especially since it concerns the good name of Abandonia. |

Also, Abandonia can use BT to save on space and bandwidth on any large game offered greater than, say 5 megs. Finally, Abandonia would only be responsible for posting the BT files for the legal games you want to post. If you are concerned about people BT'ing Doom 1 or Doom 2, then dont host the BT file - problem solved. |

look at it this way: with the recent ESA problem, they disabled the download of all the ESA games pretty damn quick. how would you put the genie back in the bottle if the games you wanted to stop sharing were spread out as bittorrents and edonkey or whatever? the location of the files wouldnt be abandonia's problem, but the fact it linked the files in the first place could come back to haunt them (cause bad feeling with software companies/organisations) - and theyd have no way to remove themselves from the association with the files. |

BUT: it should not keep you away from spreading legal stuff! i don't see much difference between putting some file out via FTP and putting it out via ed2k-link... (*) after all, if you 'release' the files with a name of XY-[www.abandonia.com].zip people can search for the name in brackets and find (and download) files from your site, without your servers even bothered. it just is longer-lived than any torrent link... of course you can get d**m versions there either, but you can get them also on FTP, but no one sane would ban FTP, would he? apart from that, a game considered abandoned could be spread in any other language than english, as soon as someone gives a link to that game in E,F,D,PL,RU... (name it) (*) right, i DO see a difference! FTP is single source (putting much stress on the single source; ED2K is multiple source, putting minimal stress on the single sources.... |

Abi79 | You could use BitTorrent for big or normal-sized games. I don't think there is a way to share with it games like DOOM. | |
